• comment on a post White House orders capitulation to Lieberman over 4 years ago

There is enormous leverage the WH could have with Lieberman.  CT has enormous amounts of DoD contracts, for example, and it could have been emphasized how transitory that sort of thing can be.

  • comment on a post Mike Huckabee In the Eye of a Storm over 4 years ago

I had thought Huckabee was the only Republican capable of beating Obama in 2012.  Now I think he is  probably finished.

I can just hear Sarah say "If you can't protect us
from criminals in your own state, how can you be trusted to protect us from Al Qaeda?"

Can there be any doubt why Iran, North Korea, Syria, et. al. want to acquire nuclear weapons?  They see the possibility that we could elect someone like Palin, who probably seems as dangerous to them as the most fundamentalist, militant mullah does to us.  They want them for self-defense

Does Blanche Lincoln imagine she has any future in the Democratic Party if she is the one to kill HCR?

  • comment on a post Tonight on Bill Moyers - Lessons From A Quagmire over 4 years ago

I was surprised by how much skepticism there was about escalation from the likes of Richard Russell, et. al., but no one questioned the domino theory that Johnson kept citing.  Not even the brainy McGeorge Bundy.

The real reason Johnson got sucked into the quagmire was domestic politics- the '64 election loomed and Goldwater had to be outflanked on national security.

And what are we going to do without Moyers, at a time of resurgent Republican cretinism?

I do too.  He is looking better every day.

  • comment on a post NATTERING BABOBS OF NEGATIVISM! over 4 years ago

Turnout at my Essex Country, NJ voting station was surprisingly brisk today, busier even than last November.  Ordinarily this would be good news for Corzine, since it is an overwhelmingly Democratic town, but it also is one in which people are at their limit on property taxes. Something is in the air-might be bad news.

I'm guessing you would be astounded by the salary of the Stanford President, and Professors have also done quite well.

  • comment on a post "The War on Faux" over 4 years ago

Nice stuff.  But note this from the NYT today:

"In a sign of discomfort with the White House stance, Fox's television news competitors refused to go along with a Treasury Department effort on Tuesday to exclude Fox from a round of interviews with the executive-pay czar Kenneth R. Feinberg that was to be conducted with a "pool" camera crew shared by all the networks. That followed a pointed question at a White House briefing this week by Jake Tapper, an ABC News correspondent, about the administration's treatment of "one of our sister organizations"."

You have the Jake Tappers seizing the opportunity to brown-nose Rupert Murdoch.

One recalls that after the defeat of the Taliban in 2001, the Bush administration rammed Karzai down the Afghans' throats.  He was our man.  One more bit of mismanagement Obama must deal with.

This will provide the Republicans a new opportunity to appear small, petty, ungenerous, provincial.  I am sure they will seize it.

  • comment on a post Gallup: Noticeable Drop in Opposition to HCR over 4 years ago

Given that most Americans have coverage and think they are happy with it, these numbers are especially impressive.

  • My wife similarly benefitted from Medicare treatment of ESRD to achieve a new lease on life.

I have heard, but do not know for sure, that Medicare assumed responsibility here because the wife of a Senator was so afflicted.

In any event, thank God for Lyndon Johnson, the Democratic Party, and the American taxpayers who pick up the tab today.

  • comment on a post It's All Downhill For Sarah Palin over 4 years ago

I think it is likely that the Hick will get the 2012 nomination. He's got intelligence, charm, and just the right level of derangement to be acceptable.  But it is quite possible that Palin would get the VP spot again.

  • comment on a post As a young man on Medicare over 4 years ago

If you are a young person on Medicare, that implies kidney failure, I think.  But you would have the prospect of a transplant and a fairly normal life.

This happened to my wife, and I am so grateful to Lyndon Johnson and the Democrats, the bureaucrats who designed Medicare, and the taxpayers who keep it going.
