Lemongrass Oil Benefits For Health

Lemongrass oil

Lemongrass may not be one of the most popular essential oils but it has so many applications that one thing is for sure, your bottle will never stay unused and expire at the back of your cupboard because you did not know what else to do with it.

Historically, it has been used successfully for a number of health issues including infections, fevers, stomach aches, digestive problems, headaches, and excessive sweating. It is also recorded as an insect repellent and is effective for fleas and ticks.

Today, scientific research has more to add to this oil´s benefits for health and beauty. Let’s read on!

Anti-Microbial and Anti-Fungal Remedy

According to an in vitro study published in PubMed, one of the main components of lemongrass, citral, has an anti-microbial potency and therefore it can suppress or destroy the growth of fungi and bacteria.

This can be useful in the cases of infections caused by Candida tropicalis and Candida albicans, such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, and other yeast infections.

Soothe Muscle Pain And Aches After Extensive Workout

Muscle aches and joint pains are not uncommon especially for those who do sports or workout extensively. Using anti-inflammatory ointments that contain cortisone has its side effects and hurts your pocket.

Lemongrass on the rescue! Two of its compounds, Myrcene and Geraniol have analgesic properties. Simply mix 1 tablespoon of whichever carrier oil you have handy such as almond oil or olive oil with 5 drops of lemongrass, and massage it well into the affected areas.

Ease Indigestion And Alleviate Abdominal Pain

Indigestion feels uncomfortable. It can load you with pain along your belly area and lead to bloating and belching, not a very attractive reaction, to be honest.

Research shows that a compound of lemongrass called Eugenol has a similar effect to aspirin and therefore can ease stomach upsets and relieve abdominal pain.

These pain-relieving properties can also be useful for gut issues, stomach ulcers, and Inflammatory bowel disease. So, the next time you are suffering from dyspepsia or belly cramps, remember your oil.

Headache Relief

Headaches might be more and more common these days, but nobody wants to suffer from headaches and migraines which can also affect your ability to think clearly.

Myrcene, a compound of this oil, is not only an analgesic but it also has a sedative effect on the brain, relieving tension and promoting a feeling of calmness.

Boost Poor Circulation

Having a sluggish circulatory system can reduce normal blood flow in some areas and cause varicose veins and even cellulite.

Due to the Limonene it contains, lemongrass stimulates circulation and this can have a positive effect on the appearance of both cellulitis and varicose veins.

Fight Excessive Sweating And Mask Unpleasant Odour

Perspiring is a sign of health but excessive perspiration can be a real problem. If you are looking for a natural deodorant that can help control excessive sweating and mask unattractive odors, look no further.

Due to its sedative effect, lemongrass can help you feel calmer so you sweat less and there is also evidence that its chemical composition can help regulate your body’s temperature.

Skin And Hair Care Benefits

If you are tired of looking for beauty products that promise a lot but they hardly ever deliver, the solution might be hiding in a small bottle.

Let’s find out how to unlock the potentials of this lemony treasure.

Cleanse Skin Pores And Control Acne

Clogged pores lead to blemishes and dull skin which looks tired and less youthful. Due to its astringent and antiseptic properties, lemongrass can help regulate oily skin and cleanse the pores, leading to fewer acne breakouts and preventing skin infection.

As an anti-inflammatory, it will soothe any redness or skin irritation, helping the skin heal faster and look prettier than ever.

You can make a DIY face toner or mix it with a carrier oil to create your own anti-blemish face oil.

Improve Skin Tone And Glow Naturally

By acting as a natural astringent, the skin looks more youthful, healthy and glowing with an even tone. That is great news if you want to give your skin an anti-aging boost without having to spend money on products that may cost an arm and a leg.

Relieve Insect Bites

According to a study, insects show irritability and get repelled when exposed to this oil due to the high content of citral and geraniol. Apart from used as an insecticide, it can also relieve the pain, itchiness, and swelling caused by bug bites since it has anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities.

Control Oily Hair And Boost Hair Growth

It is believed to strengthen hair follicles and prevent hair loss but also helps deal with dandruff. Its astringent and antibacterial properties can keep the hair cleaner and less oily.

Its anti-inflammatory function helps relieve scalp irritation and itchiness, which leads to healthier and stronger hair overall.

Other benefits include:

  • Relieves stress and nervousness.
  • It has a stimulative effect that can help you feel more energized.
  • May reduce high temperatures.
  • Repels fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and other insects.

Lemongrass Essential Oil Uses

Lemongrass oil uses

With so many different benefits of this oil for your health, skin, hair, and home life, it is no wonder that you may already be feeling overwhelmed about how to use lemongrass oil exactly.

No need to stress out. Here, we will give you some easy how-to recipes and practical tips, so you are eventually ready to decide which one suits your needs best.

Pain Relief Blend For Overworked Muscles And Painful Joints

An easy natural way to relieve sore achy muscles after extensive sporting activity or workout is to create your own essential oil muscle rub.

  • Simply mix a tablespoon of carrier oil of your own preference such as almond oil or olive oil with 6 drops of your lemongrass.
  • Apply to the area and rub softly without overdoing it. You can use the blend twice a day or whenever you find it is necessary.

Alternatively, you can use other muscle relief essential oils to your blend. Good anti-inflammatory options are rosemary, lavender, St. John’s Wort, eucalyptus, and Roman chamomile.

Deodorizing Shower Gel

Sweating a lot can produce an unpleasant odor and make you feel uncomfortable. Often times, antiperspirant products are full of nasty chemicals that can irritate your skin.

The following recipe has anti-bacterial properties and will help you control bad odor and feel more refreshed. Its scent is perfect for an early morning boost that increases energy levels while at the same time promoting calmness.

  • Add two tablespoons of unscented shower gel to a glass container and mix it with 7 drops of lemongrass oil.
  • You can use it once or twice every day.

Athlete´s Foot Massage Rub

Athlete´s foot, a fungal infection between the toes, feels uncomfortable and can easily spread to other parts of your body. It can also be transmitted to other people.

The quicker you start treating the infected area, the better results you will get. Here is how:

  • In a bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of coconut oil with 5 drops of lemongrass and 5 drops of tea tree oil which has strong anti-fungal properties, too.
  • Transfer the mixture to a euro dropper for easy application and protection from the air and light.
  • After a shower, apply a few drops of the blend to your feet and massage the area gently.
  • Let it absorb well before putting on your socks or shoes.
  • Keep the mixture in a cool and dark place.

Acne Face Toner For Oiliness And Bacteria Control

Having had a blemish-prone skin, I am always after natural ways to control oiliness and keep breakouts at bay. This is one of my favorite DIY anti-blemish toners. It is super easy to make and you can keep it up to a week preferably in the fridge.

However, you need to be careful and use the oil in very low dilution.

You will only need two ingredients, rosewater, and lemongrass. While rosewater is anti-inflammatory, soothing and hydrating to the skin, lemongrass works as an anti-bacterial and oil control agent to keep skin clear and glowing.

  • Mix one cup of rose water with 1 drop of lemongrass to a bowl and transfer to a spritz bottle. I prefer spritz bottles because they are easy to use wherever you are since they do not need anything extra for application.

Stomach-Settling Blend For Indigestion

Indigestion can cause pain, irritation to your stomach and other unpleasant symptoms. The following recipe can be your handy comforter whenever you need it.

Apart from lemongrass, you can also use dill essential oil and ginger oil which are great for stomach distress and heartburn.

  • Mix 2 tablespoons of almond oil with 2 drops of lemongrass, 4 drops of ginger and another 4 of dill oil.
  • Pour the mixture into a dropper bottle and apply it when necessary.
  • Massage the blend into the painful area and let it absorb well before getting dressed.
  • Store safely for up to 3 months.

Cellulite Body Massage Oil

Poor circulation can lead to varicose veins and cellulite that can make us look unattractive. To stimulate sluggish circulation and improve the appearance of cellulite, your oil comes handy.

To this recipe, I have added aloe vera gel. It has soothing and cooling properties that feel great when you apply it to the skin and it also promotes skin elasticity and moisture. Here is the recipe:

  • Mix 3 drops of lemongrass with 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil or any other carrier oil. I like jojoba oil because it absorbs excellently into the skin.
  • Add half a tablespoon of aloe vera gel to the mixture and stir well so that all the ingredients are perfectly mixed together.
  • Massage the cellulite areas to improve lymphatic drainage and stretch the skin tissues, which can be beneficial for this condition.
  • Repeat the process once or twice a day if possible.

Natural Body Mosquito Repellent Lotion

Whether you are traveling to a mosquito favorite country or you just want to enjoy some peaceful moments in your porch without the buzzing sounds of mosquitoes interrupting your calm and giving you surprise bites, a body mosquito repellent comes always handy.

Especially when it is made by using natural ingredients that will not irritate your skin or give you nausea when you smell it as the case is with a lot of these OTC mosquito repellents.

Here comes your mosquito solution:

  • Mix 4 tablespoons of unscented lotion base with 10 drops of lemongrass and transfer to a lotion dispenser. Your bug repellent lotion is ready for use.

Homemade Bug Spray For Home And Porch

Fleas, ticks and other bugs can be a real nuisance, and this can be especially true for people who have pets. Essential oil bug sprays are a natural effective alternative to chemical-laden products.

They can be used for different areas in and out of the house. Some people use them to deodorize dog houses or dog beds and a few of them spray the dogs directly to get rid of the fleas and ticks.

Here you have to be extra careful though because lemongrass can be toxic to the pets. It depends on the amount you are using and the susceptibility of the animal, but overall it is better to use this oil only after the recommendation of a veterinarian.

Let’s move on to our insect repellent spray recipe! We are using three essential oils with proven insecticidal properties.

  • In a 3-ounce spritz bottle pour 30 ml. of pure alcohol or vodka and add 10 drops of each of the following oils: lemongrass, lemon eucalyptus, and citronella.
  • Fill up more than half of the bottle with clean water and spray on the porch or in your house to kill and repel fleas, ticks, chiggers or other bugs.

DIY Hair Tonic Shampoo For Hair Growth And Scalp Relief

Scalp build-up can lead to irritation, dandruff, and even hair loss. Keeping clean hair and scalp is not always easy since a lot of those market hair products are filled with unnecessary additives that are often too strong for the scalp and leave hair dull and unhealthy.

There is a number of essential oils that strengthen hair follicles and soothe scalp irritation. Rosemary is widely used in hair growth shampoos and lavender can help prevent thinning hair, promoting overall scalp and hair health.

The solution lies to creating your own hair strengthening shampoo and here is how:

  • Fill up a 2-ounce shampoo bottle almost to the top with a natural shampoo base.
  • Add 3 drops of each of the following oils: lemongrass, rosemary, and lavender.
  • Shake well and it is ready for use.

Other Possible Uses

  • Diffuse the oil in the air by using a diffuser or an oil burner. That way, you can create your own natural home freshener (it masks foul odors and keeps the air clean and fresh).
  • Inhale it by bringing it close but not too close to your nostrils or apply a few drops to a tissue and then inhale. That will soothe your nerves and help you feel more positive. If you don’t want to carry the bottle with you, you can use an essential oil inhaler. They come in some great colors and are fun to use.
  • Create your own soothing blend for headaches and apply it to your temples.
  • Prepare a sauna blend to cleanse your skin pores.
  • Mix lemongrass with your bubble bath product and add it to your bath. Be careful when you come out of the bath though, because you may slip and slide. Also, always make sure to clean the bathtub afterward to remove the oils completely. Great natural de-greasers are castile soap and baking soda.
  • Create a disinfectant and odor masking spritz for your yoga mat. You can also use it to spray carpets, kitchen countertops, blankets or the inside of your wardrobes to give a refreshing scent.
  • Add to your laundry and home cleaning products.
  • Add to your wool dryer balls.
  • Lemongrass blends well with citrus, mint, wood and herbaceous essential oils. Some examples are cypress, geranium, ginger, cedarwood, ylang-ylang, sweet orange, rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, and pine.

How To Dilute Lemongrass Oil

As a general rule of thumb, always dilute essential oils before applying them to your skin. The reason is that if you apply undiluted, they can cause skin sensitization, which is a negative skin reaction. What’s more, the reaction can reappear at any time in the future if your skin comes to contact with the same oil again or even other essential oils.

As an extra precaution and due to the fact that lemongrass can irritate some people’s skin, Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young recommend a maximum dilution of 0.7 % in their book ‘Essential Oil Safety’. This comes to four drops per ounce.

Side Effects And Safety Precautions

Essential oils have been a great tool for people, affecting positively different aspects of their lives but as highly concentrated essences, their use comes with some potential risks. The key here is to study and know your oil well before trying it out.

Also, do not overdo it. Start with a smaller amount and always dilute before applying to the skin. These are some general rules but what is there to know about lemongrass safety?

Due to its high content in Citral, some people may experience skin irritation with this oil. If you have sensitive skin, it is better to do a patch test before or do not go over 0.7% dilution.

Avoid applying it on broken, hypersensitive or damaged skin and keep away from the areas near the mucous membranes or the eyes.

Kids under 7 should not use it and nor should pregnant women or nursing women if they are not under the guidance of a licensed health care practitioner. Also, internal use can be toxic to the body.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is lemongrass oil safe for dogs and cats?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that are potent and they have the potential to become toxic to cats and dogs, and cause poisoning. Lemongrass and other oils may be safe for pets’ use in very small amounts but this can only be verified by a veterinarian.

Remember that diffusing this oil around cats can make your pet sick. Also, be careful when you are using them in DIY household cleaning products such as floor cleaners. Instead, you can go for pet-friendly cleaners.

Can lemongrass be used for skin lightening?

As an astringent, lemongrass helps unclog the pores and makes the skin look brighter and more clear. However, there is no scientific evidence to back the claim that it can be used effectively for skin lightening.

Is lemongrass a citrus oil?

The name of this oil and its citrus scent are very misleading and can make you think that it belongs to the citrus family. However, this is not a citrus oil. Citrus oils are those essential oils that are extracted from the peels of the citrus fruits, and lemongrass is not a citrus fruit but a plant whose leaves and stalks are used to extract its oil.

What does lemongrass oil smell like?

It has a clean fresh and strong lemony aroma with herbaceous undertones which is not overly sweet but feels refreshing and uplifting. Its distinct clear scent makes it perfect for household cleaning solutions, deodorizing products, and other DIY personal care and home items such as handmade soaps, lotions, gels, shampoos, and even candles.

Is lemongrass oil phototoxic?

Steam distilled lemongrass is not phototoxic but since it has a high content of citral, it should be used in low amounts when applied to the skin (0.7% dilution).

Can you ingest lemongrass essential oil?

Essential oils are very potent and have the potential to be harmful and toxic to our bodies even if they are ingested in small amounts. In addition, they can interact with medicine you may be taking, making them invalid.

Ingestion should only be performed under the instructions of a qualified aromatherapist or a healthcare professional who will take into account different information about your health profile such as health issues, current medications, body type, and metabolism.

What is its shelf life?

3-4 years.

Is lemongrass the same as citronella?

No, it isn’t. Some people call them cousins. As plants, they are very similar, but citronella has stems that have a reddish color, whereas lemongrass is green. The Latin name of lemongrass is Cymbopogon flexuosus and Citronella is Cymbopogon citratus.

What is the difference between lemon and lemongrass essential oil?

Lemon oil is extracted from the peels of the lemon (Citrus Limon) with cold-pressed methods of extraction whereas lemongrass is extracted from the partly dried or fresh leaves of the lemongrass plant by steam distillation. Of course, the uses and benefits of each oil are different, too.

The Bottom Line

Lemongrass is a lovely multi-purpose essential oil overall. With so many different properties ranging from anti-microbial to analgesic, sedative, digestive, anti-inflammatory, and others, it seems that you will never run out of ideas for using it to enhance your health and home life.
