Matt Damon on a possible Palin presidency: UPDATED with video

In an interview at the Toronto Film Festival, actor Matt Damon took a couple minutes to give his negative assessment of Governor Palin.

I know, I know, he's 'just a celebrity.' But in the space of about 90 seconds he does a fine job of framing the real danger McCain's pick for VP. He explains how, not only does he know little about her, but how that's unlikely to change in the next eight weeks. He brings up Creationism in a brilliant way, and succinctly summarizes the insanity of choosing a VP who may have wanted to ban books. A Palin presidency in a nutshell: a really bad Disney movie; a terrifying possibility.

I especially like his tone throughout. He's flabbergasted by the pick, flabbergasted by the possibility that McCain/Palin might win, and seems to be flabbergasted by anything having to do with the Governor Palin. We shouldn't be afraid of her; she really is an empty vessel.

Re: Tips for Jason Bourne

...and for Matt Damon.  (Yes, it's random and a bit cruel, but I can't see "Matt Damon" without reading it in this voice now.)

Don't go there

So...is Matt Damon trying to help Obama by insulting "hockey mom's?"

"I'm just a hockey mom from Alaska"

Then Damon brings up experience or lack thereof. Does he really want to go there?

Re: Don't go there

How, exactly, does he insult hockey moms?

Sheesh

Well there ya go. The fact that you don't get it is the problem.

Re: Sheesh

I get false outrage.

But would you be offended if somebody said you weren't qualified to be president?

You aren't. It doesn't mean you're a bad person. I'm not qualified to be a plumber, or an IT assistant, or a surgeon. It wouldn't make me cry to be told so.

Re: Sheesh

You get false outrage? You shouldn't get any outrage since I'm personally not outraged.

But would you be offended if somebody said you weren't qualified to be president?
I'm not offended. That being said I'm tuned in enough to understand that many people are.

You aren't.
You're willing to analyze me through the internet and yet you don't give much thought to what others see as disrespectful....I guess that it's due to the fact that you are in the tank for Obama and if someone says something pro-Obama, it's A OK with you.
It doesn't mean you're a bad person.
How the hell do you know? You don't know anything about me.Heh heh heh
I'm not qualified to be a plumber, or an IT assistant, or a surgeon.
Did I ask?
It wouldn't make me cry to be told so.
Good for you?

Re: Sheesh

Oy!

I wasn't implying that you were outraged, but that any 'hockey mom' who was offended by Damon's comments who was outraged . . . well, you see where it's going.

Do you really think people are offended by the notion that some aren't qualified to be president? Yes, some are, but they tend to be the same ones saying Obama's not qualified, which leads me to believe they won't vote for him anyway.

I don't think Damon said anything pro-Obama. In fact, he doesn't mention Obama once in the interview. I'm not 'in the tank' for anybody. I support Obama because he is a far superior candidate. I only wish this country was honest enough with itself to accept an honest discussion of issues.

"It doesn't mean you're a bad person." It also doesn't mean you're a good person. It just means you're not qualified to be the president of the US.

Analogies? Get it?

ciao, goodnight, and good travels. I'll be winding up this little bit o dialogue now.

Why not?  Her lack of experience, knowledge, and apparent interest about the world outside (or even inside!) Alaska is vast.  So is our lack of experience and knowledge about her (unfortunately we seem inordinately interested).

Barack Obama may not have punched the clock enough times for you, but he knows his shit.  Palin's clueless.

Heh, heh, heh...maybe the political pundits can use your line when lack of experience comes up.

People with college degrees are for Obama

Doesn't he already have that vote by a wide margin?

by Dracomicron 2008-09-11 05:31AM | 0 recs
there's a lot of independents

that aren't..

so I think on non-fundamentalists it's effective

Re: Matt Damon

Wow Matt Damon.  That carry's some weight right there I tell ya.   I am eagerly waiting for Ron Silverman, Ben Affleck, Dennis Miller and all the other out to lunch Hollywood hacks to weigh in with their useless two cents.

Re: Matt Damon

In general I agree, but in this case, look at what was said, not who said it.

Re: Matt Damon

I agree. The reason I posted it is that his approach seems potentially effective. I mean, we should be shocked by this pick. Does she really believe some books should be banned? And if she does, will she willingly answer the question? If so, damn, we need to know and we need to say, no thanks.
