Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

First, feel free to recommend this diary. Because what I am going to write is going to be an important defense of what Obama is trying to say today about Palin's daughter.

Second, lets be honest. We're number crunchers here at myDD. We love to read the tea leaves.  So be objective about what I'm going to write. I want you to tell me what you think about it.

Here's the situation. We know the VP pick of McCain, now has a pregnant 17 year old daugher. We also know that the mother and prospective vice president of the United States, is going to encourage that daughter to marry and have the child.

The issue is not whether or not a child, should have a child. A 17 year old is hardly a mature person. To marry, and give her life to motherhood at this early age is noble, and perhaps misinformed.

The issue is whether or not we will descend into the political gutter.

Obama made a clear call today to all of us, to simply say. Hey. Family is off limits.  And that holds alot of promise for us.
All of us.

A person who is trying to decide whether or not to go into corporate America, with deep six figure salaries, or to turn to public service - has a lot to decide. One of those factors should not be whether or not his family will be used as political cannon fodder.

Another important reason why Obama is right, has to do largely with the fact that Obama stands for making abortion scarce. Lets face it, this child - having this child - has made a choice
that will resonate throughout her entire life.  And whether or not you think the issue is roe v. wade, the fact is, that in this case, the Palins have taken a huge moral issue and dealt with it in a way that respects the life of the unborn child, and I am sure, the life of their child.  This young lady will have +support+ and +help+ to raise her child. Thats important. What mother would choose not to have her baby, if she knew she would be helped, and cared for? Nordic countries in europe with heavily socialized medicine, sport the lowest abortion rates in the entire world, for this specific reason.

If we can support Obama, and go hands-off on this little girl who is having her baby - then we'll all end up coming out ahead.  Sure, Palin's not qualified to be president, thats not the issue. The issue Obama is raising, at least to this author - is whether or not families are fair game. Obama doesn't want his family to be targets. He wants to face McCain square on, and not have a dog and pony show running.

And lets face it, who else loves a dog and pony show more than the evangelics?

So in the end, I am really interested in what you think. I know this is a kind of a first, in American politics, to have a GOP Female candidate and then almost immediately following a set of scandals that threaten to disrupt her candidacy.. I just want to know, if you feel that following Obama's lead, and just taking the fuze off this thing, is good for America.

Or should we hit them where they live? What do you think?

Obama is correct

her daughter is off limits. But... palin's beliefs and what she wants to push on this country are part of the reason her daughter is in this situation.

Hit her on her right wing wacko ideas and beliefs, this can be done without mentioning her daughter in any way.

But remember

palin and the rest of the repubs are Anti-Choice NOT prolife.

IMHO we need to change our line

I think the line about this being about life, is wrong.  I think we have two lives here.
A mothers life, and the life of a child yet to be.

Abortion rates plummet and I mean +plummet+ in countries that support the mother warmly. Give mom a chance.

Maybe the Dem. party should be "pro mom". Pro healthcare. pro schooling. pro childcare.

Definitely agree the rest of them are anti choice.
its just that, its just such a private thing. why punish a woman who is making such a difficult choice? good lord. isn't the choice itself punishment enough? to have a cute little baby or not? women are genetically encoded to lurve those little babies.

I would guess that somewhere along the line, the lights will come on to the american public that the biggest drop in abortion rates came during clinton's administration.

And for what its worth, I don't think the family thing is really important. After all, you could say that Hillary Clinton had a husband who was impeached by congress.

Given that Obama really supported Clinton's approach to healthcare, and is moving forward with a great healthcare plan - the whole idea of whether or not this is for getting the female vote is laughable to me.

What is McCain changing, in his policies - to reflect the concerns and needs of women - in his appointment of a woman?

If I were a woman, I would vote for the candidate that is actually listening to women.

And if Palin actually listened to her own daughter, maybe she would be in better shape.
A 17 year old child. Having a child.

Well , its wondrous news, but it will be hard on the young woman. I guess if she makes vice president we can give her some leave time so she can help her daughter. No worries there.

Oy vey. I am rambling. :-)

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

I would hope everybody here agrees with you.

Issues, what Gov. Palin has done as governor, and did as mayor are more than enough ammo.

Her family didn't ask for this and has absolutely nothing to do with as to whether she is fit or not to be the VP

Abstinence Only Education Is A Joke

That's all I have to say about that.

by X Stryker 2008-09-02 12:09PM | 0 recs

I mean that in the sense of "This shows why Abstinence-Only Education is a joke. And that's the only relevent piece of information in this situation. Let's move on."

Well said

I would rather hit Palin on her PTA record than go after her family.

Didn't we have enough of going after people's families back in the primary when people were salavating to chew up Michelle Obama and brand her as a terrorist-in-training?

Weren't we disgusted when we heard about the joke McCain told about Chelsea Clinton?  Of course, the joke's on John, there, because Chelsea grew up to be a mighty attractive lady.

If Bristol were to go on the stump and start attacking Obama's foreign policy, I'd be more than happy to have someone take her down a few pegs... but it wouldn't be about the life growing in her belly.

Re: Well said

Ok, thats disgusting. :-b

My politically savvy mom, made a point to me that I missed.

She said "McCain looked at Palin's ass, sixteen times during her speech. It was embarassing!"

So I guess you and McCain are pretty much in the same boat.

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

Obama surrogates could use this as an example of how we can't judge people for getting pregnant when they're young, but we should do everything we can to help them make the right decision.  And ultimately, it's their decision.

Obama himself has played this masterfully.  I don't think he's being coached.  I think this is Obama.

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

Lord you are right about that. Seriously.
Some men are born. I mean .. .+born+ statesmen.

They come along once every 100 years or so.
Obama, was born to be a statesman. Not a politician.

Honestly, his presidency will be something like Teddy Roosevelt, or JFK's presidency.
It will be one that will be remembered for aeons.

I like it how he said, this is not about me. its about. you.

It realy is. the guy is going to get to washington, and then carry out the public trust.

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

"Lets face it, this child - having this child - has made a choice that will resonate throughout her entire life."

The problem is, I don't think she ever really had a choice.  I think Sarah said "You're having this f#$king baby and that's that."

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

Well my mom, who happend to be fairly politically connected (she worked for a high ranking , extremely well known statesman regarding medical, municipal, and military affairs..) ...

said this: "This is going to backfire. They are going to make her get married and have the child, and its all going to blow up in their face"

I do disagree with my mom sometimes. I think I am fairly neutral on the subject. I think a young mother wants to have a child. She feels comfortable with the father. Its one of those things. Its her decision and I respect it.

Wow. what a decision though. Hey. seriously. I am glad I am a guy sometimes.

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

Mostly agree, however the ISSUE of both homeschooling and abstinence only sex un-"education" is part of Sarahs's package, that issue as seen in her own upbringing of her own daughter is fair game IMHO.

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

The isuue is still there without the daughter.......

McCain/Palin fought money on teen pregnancy programs

WASHINGTON - Republican John McCain, whose running mate disclosed that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, has opposed proposals to spend federal money on teen-pregnancy prevention programs and voted to require poor teen mothers to stay in school or lose their benefits.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's announcement Monday about her daughter, Bristol, was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's. Palin said her daughter intends to raise her child and marry the baby's father, who was identified only by his first name, Levi. The baby is due in late December.

Palin herself said she opposes funding sexual-education programs in Alaska.

"The explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support," she wrote in a 2006 questionnaire distributed among gubernatorial candidates.

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

Family is off limits??

Explain this... "why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? because Janet Reno is her father" -- John McCain

Republicans are so disgusting you can not take anything off the table.

If you want to win you gotta put on the gloves and fight!

Re: Palin's Daughter: Why Obama is Right

I respect that. I disagree. It was just a joke.
Having a news cycle dedicated to say, Obama's daughters, would be awful.

Go try and convince anyone to run for public office, and oh by the way, we will humiliate your family in the process. see how many takers you get.

Sure the GOP is harsh. they have to be. they're deflecting attention from their record.

I think if we hit Sarah Palin with stuff like why she forced one of her state officials to fire a police officer because he dissed her sister in law. That would be worthwhile. Hey. Abuse of power is a crime. Carries farther, if you can add jail time to it all.

My two cents. I respect where you are coming from. Those guys can be pretty nasty.
