My God! Harry Reid is a Genius!

I am speechless. And thrilled to my toes.

People, look at this post on DKos, including a press release from Reid: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/4/25/134319/005.

People, LOOK AT THIS POST! DO IT!

Harry Reid has put out a press release saying that, whereas minorities traditionally defer to majorities in proposing legislation--going through the committees--that deference ends if the Nuclear Option is invoked.

Then he says that (be still my heart) THE DEMS ARE POUTTING 9 BILLS DIRECTLY ON THE SENATE FLOOR, bypassing committees.

All are pro-people.

This is EVERYTHING I could ask for!

I saw the discussion today about whether the DEMs should propose things. I find that a weird discussion.

But I really liked a comment that said, in effect, don't propose things on their turf. Don't go offering plans for saving S S. That surely makes sense.

But this is DIFFERENT! It is PRICELESS!

Reid is PROPOSING MIDDLE CLASS RELIEF and forcing the Thugs to react.

This is the activism that you can do even if you are in the minority. It isn't waiting around for an election. And when you put things up that people will care about, they will have a reason to support you.

And on the Nuclear Option, it turns on its head the whole Thug complaint about obstructionism. And it probes depths of the minority/majority relationship no one had previously known about.

It is absolutely brilliant.

I LOVE this guy! Daschle's loss may have been the greatest silver lining in American political history. No way on earth he would have been half as effective.

Reid is doing what I keep talking about: HE IS LEADING! He is picking battles, fighting them, and mostly winning with weak hands.

So what happens to Senate caucus discipline? It improves. People like sticking tough with a winner.

And it changes the overall political dynamic in the nation. Even if ordinary folk have no clue what Frist is doing, they are vaguely aware that things aren't going so well. Bush Co. is showing weakness. It's kind of like in "The Return of the King" when the orcs in Mordor are grousing about rumors that the war isn't going well. Signs of strength and weakness spread through the body politic like wildfire--ALWAYS! Every army knows when its leaders are weak and they are never wrong about that.

THIS STUFF MATTERS! And while frames are surely involved, it is POLITICAL ACTION, not just talk. It can grow actual credibility among the troops.

I really love Harry Reid.

He gives me hope for this nation.

Keep it up, DEMs. Discover how to LEAD!

Credit where credit is due
This is the move that I've been waiting to see out of Harry Reid. From the dkos diary, a link to Rule XIV.

This is the real deal. Here's a list of the bills that Reid is threatening to put on the agenda, from Harry Reid's email:

Democrats have introduced bills that address America's real challenges. (Details attached)

  1. Women's Health Care (S. 844). "The Prevention First Act of 2005" will reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and abortions by increasing funding for family planning and ending health insurance discrimination against women.

  2. Veterans' Benefits (S. 845).  "The Retired Pay Restoration Act of 2005" will assist disabled veterans who, under current law, must choose to either receive their retirement pay or disability compensation.

  3. Fiscal Responsibility (S. 851).  Democrats will move to restore fiscal discipline to government spending and extend the pay-as-you-go requirement.

  4. Relief at the Pump (S. 847).  Democrats plan to halt the diversion of oil from the markets to the strategic petroleum reserve. By releasing oil from the reserve through a swap program, the plan will bring down prices at the pump.

  5. Education (S. 848).  Democrats have a bill that will: strengthen head start and child care programs, improve elementary and secondary education, provide a roadmap for first generation and low-income college students, provide college tuition relief for students and their families, address the need for math, science and special education teachers, and make college affordable for all students.

  6. Jobs (S. 846).  Democrats will work in support of
legislation that guarantees overtime pay for workers and sets a fair minimum wage.

  1. Energy Markets (S. 870).  Democrats work to prevent Enron-style market manipulation of electricity.

  2. Corporate Taxation (S. 872).  Democrats make sure companies pay their fair share of taxes to the U.S. government instead of keeping profits overseas.

  3. Standing with our troops (S. 11). Democrats believe that putting America's security first means standing up for our troops and their families

"Abusing power is not what the American people sent us to Washington to do. We need to address real priorities instead -- fight for relief at the gas pump, stronger schools and lower health care costs for America's families," said Senator Reid.

Go get 'em Harry!

Re: Credit where credit is due
Can somebody please explain why I am the only person giving Harry Reid credit for actually doing something in opposition?

Huh?
You just responded to a post giving Reid tons of credit.

And there are posts all over here and DKos doing it.

What are you talking about?

Re: Huh?
Where are all of the diaries giving Reid credit besides this one?

Re: Huh?
I suspect that a lot of people out there are still pinching themselves to make sure that this is real.
Daschle-ism is dead.  The Dems are about to go to the mattresses.  I still can't quite believe this is happening...

May Daschle's spirit rest in peace
I thought the DLC was going to keep him on life support in a persistent vegetative state forever. Three cheers for a decent burial!

Yes
Reid has impressed. And, you know what, run with these bills in 06. The campaign theme should be "priorities". Here are ours. Theirs involve telling intruding into medical decisions, threatening judges, dismantle Social Security, and change Senate tradition.

Let's not get too carried away
Basically, Harry has finally started doing his job. Both bankruptcy and class action lawsuit restrictions could have easily been stalled long enough to get gummed up in the filibuster briar patch. Both of those bills passed because MBNA Biden got clearance from Harry to ram them through the committee and grease the skids in the Senate.

I'll evaluate Harry's first year at the end of this session of Congress. Until then, Harry deserves a gold star and a big attaboy.

Re: Let's not get too carried away
Meanwhile, the House Dems are on the verge of meltdown, as progressives and moderates trade accusations over the bankruptcy vote.

Thanks for the reality check
I can't say I'm surprised. It was probably too much to expect that Dems would have a good day in both the House and the Senate at the same time. The Dems have been doing such a pathetic job of opposition, that even the smallest suggestion that they are standing up for core principles can lead to irrational exuberance.
