Newsflash!!! John McCain Aware of Internet

McCain aide Mark Soohoo made this extraordinary statement today while fielding questions during the Personal Democracy Forum in New York:

"You don't actually have to use a computer to understand how it shapes the country"
"John McCain is aware of the Internet," says Soohoo. "This is a man who has a very long history of understanding on a range of issues."

When contacted, The Internet said that he was aware of John McCain....but had dismissed him years ago.

And I'd like to say

that I'm aware of my ass - only I don't need both hands to find it!

What are you talking about?

The fun I am making is of the statement itself.  It's a pretty stupid thing for an aide to say.  And do you really want a President who looks blankly when cyber-terrorism is discussed?

As for old people not having a clue - I probably count as 'old' in your book (being over 50)- and I blog with people who are in their 80's.

My 70 yr old mother

Keeps trying to get me juiced about Twitter. NEVA!!

It has nothing to do with age. It has everything to do with attitude.

I agree

Either you keep up or you don't.  Age is no longer an impediment when it comes to information or attitude.  I hate it when people excuse racism, calling it generational.  Same thing goes for technology.  My mother who was born in 1909 never learned to drive a car.  Said a horse was better.  That meant during an emergency, she had to wait to be rescued by someone else - she couldn't just drive to the hospital herself.  That almost killed me once as a kid when I had an anaphylactic reaction to penicillin.

It's up to us to keep current.  I know I'm not as facile as some - but I do my best.

Re: Newsflash!!! John McCain Aware of Internet

That should be part of the constitutional requirements for president--you should be able to use Google and email.  We exclude people younger than 35 because they don't have enough life experience.  Shouldn't we do the same for people who don't have experience with the modern world?

Man -

Something like that's an imperative.  Basic literacy would be nice too.  If you remember - George Bush couldn't name the leaders of any countries.  When asked about Pakistan - he said the Presidents first name was 'General'.

And look what happened there.

Re: Man -

I'm not sure if naming the leaders of every country is world falls under the "basic literacy", but it should definitely be a requirement for running for president.  I probably couldn't name most of them, but I'm not running for president.
