The Democratic weaklings in Washington

Can anyone please tell me why this Democratic Congress and administration constantly cave to right-wing pressure? Today thousands on nut-jobs descended on Washington urged on by an alcoholic lunatic. Unfortunately instead of ignoring these lunatics and their leader this administration is actually appeasing them. This includes the entire goddamn administration, the WH, the Senate and the Congress.

Cases in point:

1. Resignation of Van Jones.

Van Jones was one of the most powerful voices in green entrepreneurship. Devoted to the cause of social equality he set up multiple organizations for civil rights and to combat police brutality (Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Ella Baker Center for Human Rights). The other organizations he started were Color of Change and Green for All. Color of Change was the organization that basically spearheaded the movement to boycott the lunatic show on Fox News. As retribution the host of that show started a campaign into Van Jones' past, digging up his very open political leanings. For me the only questionable thing was his name on the petition from the "9/11 Truth" organization. Unfortunately, instead of letting Van, who is a media savvy lawyer, go out and clear his name and explain his actions, the administration caved to the lunatics and cut him loose.

2. Demotion of Yosi Sergant

Yosi Sergant was media outreach person for the National Endowment of Arts. The same NEA, whose funding is fought tooth and dagger by the right-wing. What was Yossi Sergant's big crime? He participated in tele-conference that asked artists to promote social consciousness, for a project called "United We Serve". FNC caught wind if this tele-conference, promoted it as propaganda using the usual fascist, socialist, communist hyperbole. Sure enough the NEA caved and demoted Yosi Sergant.

3. Baucus caucus caves to heckler

Well everybody has now seen of heard of the obscure SC congressman called Joe Wilson who shouted "you lie" to the president. Forget for a moment the fact that this was a breach of decorum, consider this, we have had 43 presidents thus far and the only person to get heckled during an important speech just happened to be the first President who is not white. But moving on, what happened next. The said person was hailed as a hero by the lunatics, they are printing bumper stickers with "you lie" on it and flooding his campaign funds. Joe Wilson after making a reluctant and perfunctory apology, reneges on his apology and uses it to further his goals.

What was that outburst for? He wanted to make a point that illegal immigrants will be covered by the current healthcare reform. Aside from the fact that HR3200 explicitly forbids this, his outburst is just another canard pandering to the tea-baggers.

So what does our fearless leaders in the Senate do? It took them slightly more than 24 hours to give credence to this uncouth person. They unveiled a grand-plan by which they will check the citizenship status of every person before they get subsidies or are allowed to buy into the insurance exchange. Needless to say this goes further than just the illegal immigrants (the last I heard the lunatics are completely happy to deny them the right to buy band-aids from pharmacy and emergency medical care...who knows maybe Baucus and Conrad will comply with that too!) but the wide language extends to hundreds of thousands of legal tax-paying permanent residents. The message to them is thanks for your money but when it comes to your health you are on your own. This is not just wrong but it is also extremely xenophobic.

4. The Census Bureau cuts ties with ACORN

This was the official statement as per the New York Times:

"It is clear that Acorn's affiliation with the 2010 census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 census efforts," Mr. Groves wrote.

It is true that of the 80,000 or so employees and probably several thousand temporary employees, some have done questionable things. But of the larger allegations of voter fraud, none of these allegations were proven to be true. ACORN themselves have taken measures to purge themselves of these people. Yet the "general public" happens to be the same lunatic crowd. When the first criticism for HR 3200 was published on the internet by the far right, the word community was substituted with ACORN. Why? Because ACORN was and still is a very powerful grass-roots organization that was instrumental in registering millions of underprivileged people who voted this administration into office. Yet today, under pressure and from manufactured sting videos from the right-wing, this administration has gotten rid of one its main allies. Words fail me!

But this brings me to Bill Maher and his sage words:

"the Democrats never learn. Americans don't really care which side of the issue you are on as long as you don't act like pussies"

History bears out this assertion very well. Even in the face of certain recession and protests from progressives and sane minded people like Paul O'Neill, the Republicans had pushed through trillions of dollars in tax cuts, started an unfunded entitlement program, all the while spending billions (or maybe trillions because we still do not know the true cost) on a war of choice in Iraq, all the while enjoying great public support. This Democratic administration caves when the minority sneezes and runs and hides from its own shadow. Here is the rest of Bill Maher's video:

Why did the scorpion cause his drowning by biting the turtle who was giving him a ride across the river? Answer: Because it was his nature.

Sure, I can tell you...

Can anyone please tell me why this Democratic Congress and administration constantly cave to right-wing pressure?

That one's easy. They are afraid that they are going to get thrown out on their butts in the next election.

Re: Sure, I can tell you...

At the rate they are caving the same base that elected them will sit out. That sure will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Re: Blacks and young people?

Well, it's not strictly a binary issue - if turnout gets even slightly worse it would make the election harder than it should be.

But mostly I agree - nobody's going to sit out the election over ACORN or Yosi Sargent.

Re: Sure, I can tell you...

By people who would never vote for them anyway?  That may be true in the case of a swing-state congressman, but not in the case of the White House.  The teabaggers' attitude towards Obama is nuts.  You know how crazy it is; you were up to your neck in it last year.

Re: The Democratic weaklings in Washington

The Truther thing is a bigger deal than I think you realize.  The media-savvy and charismatic Jones' defense was simply "this doesn't reflect my views, now or ever."  Then why did he sign it?  Do you really want to spend time answering that, especially in the runup to the 9/11 anniversary?

Re: The Democratic weaklings in Washington

Van Jones is just one. But he seems to be just the beginning. What is worrisome is that they are caving to the loonies on legislation as well, witness the dropping of end of life counseling because of Sarah Palin...Sarah Palin for fuck's sake!! And now this bizarre citizenship check because someone was boorish enough to call the president a liar during his SOU speech.

I know you will never stop, but

worriers have been a pain in the ass for all human history.

Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but it gets you nowhere.  ~Glenn Turner

Re: The Democratic weaklings in Washington

We'll find out if Van Jones is the beginning of more to come or not.

I agree about the legislative issues - especially the citizenship check.  It's bad policy and it's horrible politics.  Mssrs Baucus and Conrad essentially said "yeah, we tried to slide one past you, but you caught us.  Alright, we won't funnel money to illegals."
