The 41 House Democratic Enablers For FISA

41 House Democrats voted for the "Protect America Act of 2007" tonight, and of these 41, 32 are from "red" districts.  Only 4 are from even what could be called "blue" districts.

I certainly would rather have these 41 in Congress than the Republicans who would usually represent them, and this may very well be a case of voting with the constituents, but it's certainly something to think about whether these guys are adding to conservative credentials to win conservative districts. It could very well add to an idea of "playing politics with the Constitution".

I have to give some credit here to Tim Johnson (IL-15) and Walter Jones (NC-3) of voting against this.

Listed below are the 41 who voted for it, and their Cook Partisan Voting Indices for their district.

Re: The 41 House Democratic Enablers For FISA

It's telling that Ike Skelton (MO-4), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, didn't vote for this.

Re: Skelton, Walter Jones, Boswell

Skelton is a very conservative Democrat from an even more conservative district.  Kerry got 35.2% of the vote there.

Republican Walter Jones has seen the light.  This term he's had a "road to Damascus" kind of experience.  The last I checked, the WaPo listed Jones as having the lowest loyalty score of any Rep, Republican or Democrat, this session.  He not only votes with us 30% oer more of the time but he votes with us on the biggies.  Consistently.  There have been rumors that Jones will convert to the Democratic side of the aisle.

Boswell is a huge and consistent drain who is not a consistent vote for Nancy Pelosi and certainly for Democrats.  The DCCC poured $800 K into his coffers last time around, a huge amount in a mildly blue district in a tidal victory year.  Selden Spencer in IA-4 could have won with that.  Heck, Dan Maffei and Eric Massa could have won with that in NY.  I've seen a tape of Boswell's stump speech and it sucked.  No passion and not much content.

Brian Higgins needs to show some spine.  He was practically unopposed as a freshman last year.  Forget the PVI, he's in for life.  Heck, I think Costa was unopposed.

Our Democratic Congress is a disgrace!!! I can't believe I wasted all that money and effort!! You can bet I will not do it again. Our party is now an accomplice to shredding the Constitution because our leaders are lying cowards!!

David, it is telling that Ike Skelton didn't vote for this.

I'm very surprised most by Tim Walz, who I saw as a rising star in Minnesota, and Artur Davis, although I suspect w/him, this is positioning for a statewide run in Alabama.

And Walter Jones once was a Democrat, and switched after 1994.  Could he switch again?  He is right on Iraq, right on trade, and right on FISA.  If only more Republicans were voting like him, we'd be better off.

Re: The 41 House Democratic Enablers For FISA

Did anyone see Todd Tiahrt on C-SPAN last night during this?  He invoked Ruby Ridge and Waco as reasons Janet Reno should have been treated the same as Alberto Gonzalez, and said that liberal Democrats' lawsuits were enabling the terrorists.

This man may be the scariest in the House.
