Empty Seats at Obama/Oprah Event

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

An old pal just sent me this image of today's Obama event [editor's note, by susanhu] at UCLA in Los Angeles the Meadowlands in New Jersey.  Politico's Ben Smith adds:

You won't see this in most of the news photography, because photographers are packed into press risers, opposite whatever backdrop -- a crowd, a flag -- the campaign prefers.

But while Obama has held some very large rallies in some very small cities -- 14,000 in Boise! -- there have also been quite a few empty seats at some of the bigger venues.

Now Smith has another photo up that shows even more empty seats:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Granted, UCLA has a big stadium. But ...

And I have to add this:  If this had happened at a Hillary Clinton event, you can bet that these images would be all over the news, and the Obama followers at Daily Kos would be laughing themselves silly.  But Obama gets a pass.

Re: Empty Seats

Well, I went to the Oprah/Obama event in SC, where over 30k attended. Yet, because the stadium seats 80k, one could have easily gotten a photo to make it seemed like no one showed up.

Do we know the attendance numbers for this event at the Meadowlands?

Re: Empty Seats

Meadowlands was 20,000 according to the Prospect. But as pointed out, this was UCLA.

bullshit

attendance at the meadowlands was 3,000

capacity is 20,000.

big diff!

What a huge waste of donors money!

renting such  venue cost huge dollars.  Probably around 1/4 mill.

Re: Empty Seats at Obama/Oprah Event

Again, I realize that that's a big place, but you'd think there'd be more people there than that.

Well, maybe it was the people who have to work for a living -- and support Hillary Clinton -- who couldn't blow a workday to go to a campaign event.

Re: you are right

That's true, and I think for that reason these photos are at least a helpful lesson in humility.  But come on, guys: you're complaining that an Obama event scheduled the afternoon of Super Bowl Sunday, and one where the candidate didn't even make an appearance, only drew 8,000 people?

Re: Empty Seats at Obama/Oprah Event

That's a very apt analogy.

Apparently, their campaign aggressively works on packing venues, b/c that's a big part of the media narrative.  He is supposedly exciting new voters. No mention of new voters who have voted for Hillary.  As somebody said, older women are not exciting!

Re: Hillary probably hasn't packed some

Isn't the "magic" combo of Oprah and Obama supposed to pack the house and create something so compelling that people can't stay away?  Apparently not.

Probably most people in Los Angeles have to work for a living, and could care less about going to such an event.

The magic act of Oprah and Obama did a LOT BETTER on the WEEKEND.

If it was at the Meadowlands, why are there UCLA logos everywhere? And it looks like a basketball arena, not a football stadium.

With that said, an empty basketball arena in LA would prove your point more.

Re: Empty Seats at Obama/Oprah Event

First off, it is at UCLA, not the Meadowlands.

Proving you are out of touch with sports fans on both coasts.  So I do choose to laugh myself silly on that count.

Second, the candidate wasn't there and it was Super Bowl Sunday, about as close to a national holiday without being one.

Third, they filled the court.  Now, for you non sports-fans out there (like, say, the author of this thread), often when fans rush the court at the end of a basketball game (particularly a close game resulting in an upset of a good, or "ranked" team), the seats empty.  Now, does that mean that no one appeared or the attendance wasn't good?  No.

But thanks for the pictures.  Off you go to the Potemkin Town Hall.  ("Senator, I have a question:  How are you so awesome and so committed to effective change.  A follow up:  Are you ready on Day One or Day Two.")

Re: Empty Seats at Obama/Oprah Event

I've gone to a lot of college basketball games -- particularly when my daughter was young.  They were WOMEN's basketball games.  I saw UCLA's team play.  I took my daughter, and her friends, so that they could see what young women are capable of!  They loved the women's teams.

Those women get to play collegiate basketball because a lot of women fought for the right of women to participate in college sports just like men can.  Fights like that have been largely forgotten.  And I've seen sexism rise again in very ugly forms.

Btw, my eyesight isn't as good as yours -- it was hard for me to see the Bruins logos, but I spotted them in the second image, not the first.

You're right that I'm not sure what the Meadowlands hosts -- but I'm on the West Coast, don't watch that much NFL football except the Seattle Seahawks, and besides our stations don't carry nearly as many East Coast games.

Then there's that I've had to work as a single mother for the past twenty-five years, and haven't had a LOT of time to sit around and watch sports.  I'm sorry about that.

Re: Empty Seats at Obama/Oprah Event

Susan, who fought for Title IX and got it passed?

Ted Kennedy.

People support women without being women, much like one can support women for high office without supporting HRC (much like one can support a black man for the WH without supporting Obama).

I actually love Title IX and, as the father of a 4 year old daughter, can't wait to watch her have the same opportunities I did (ok, "opportunities" and "having a sadistic high school gym coach yell at you" aren't the same thing, but bear with me.

Just try to focus on the positive of your candidate rather than nitpick on 6-8K showing up on Super Bowl Sunday for a campaign event without the candidate,

HRC is a good candidate.  I'll happily vote for her in November.  As is Obama.  I'd vote for him (tomorrow).

And the reason I'm dismissive of the town hall?  I think we've had our fill of pre-scripted commercials posing as political discussion over the last eight years.

Re: Empty Seats at Obama/Oprah Event

You are right that the media always portrays Clinton events as lacking crowds and excitement.  I took my daughter to a Clinton event recently, and there was a huge line of people to get in - we weren't able to make it in.  We tried again a few weeks later, and left extra early the next time.  We got there 1 1/2 hours early, and there was a huge line.  We did make it in (just barely), we were in the back of the auditorium.  I guess they had a huge overflow crowd, and the crowd was loud and enthusiastic.  That night we watched on the news, and they portrayed it as a boring, half empty venue (this was right before NH primary).  That just made me wonder if all her events are misrepresented in this way.

I attended the Obama event in St. Louis. From the press section, I didn't think the crowd was all that big, because almost nobody was in the stands - the crowd was packed on the floor. But the actual number in attendance was well over 20,000 - the stadium floor was packed with people.

The stadium seats more than 10,000 and they had less than a day to organize this. the crowd as it was was impressive and really enthusiastic. Re: talk about potemkin photos!!!!!

The "campaign friendly photos" as you call them show the blue seats filled.  Yours show them empty.  We're obviously talking about two different times for the same event.

So if your comment is that the empty yellow seats are indicative of something, well, fine.  But why show only the photos taken before the blue seats were filled up?

Re: Empty Seats at Obama/Oprah Event

I was there. It was organized via email with one, maybe two days notice. Super Bowl Sunday. No Barack. There were 8-10 thousand very stoked people in attendance. The crowd went wild for Oprah, for Stevie, for Michelle and especially with the surprise appearance of Maria Shriver.

I'm sure there are good examples of Obama campaign events that didn't work out too well, but this most definitely was not one of them sorry. Sorry, try again.

Re: Empty Seats

Here's what it looks like when Barack is actually there and the Super Bowl not on at the same time.  From Minneapolis on Feb. 2nd:

I confess that I skipped over this diary today, but I clicked on it because I was curious how this topic managed to draw 95 comments.

I confess, I'm still not quite sure!
