Just Another "Godless" Democrat?

(cross-posted at Motley Moose)

As many of you are aware, Kay Hagan is currently fighting a tough battle against incumbent North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole. It's still a close race, but Hagan has opened up a healthy lead against her Republican opponent, some polls suggesting a 49/42 split.

That's the good news. The bad news is, Dole's campaign has its back up against the wall so tightly that it's lashing out in the most vitriolic way possible, a method which seems to have become increasingly popular among GOP candidates this cycle: attacking the Democratic candidate's faith. Dole recently released an ad (now being referred to as "Godless") attempting to portray Hagan as a heathen liberal by claiming that a leader of the Godless Americans PAC held a fundraiser in her honor. The ad asserts that Hagan "took godless money" and asks, "What did [she] promise in return?"

This is the sort of slanderous filth of which the esteemed Governor Palin would be proud (if she weren't already too busy practicing witchcraft).

Not that it should make any difference, but Hagan is a Sunday school teacher and has been a regular churchgoer for years. Calling her faith into question is disgusting, but the ad gets viler still. It closes with a picture of Hagan's face and a voiceover of a woman saying, "There is no god." Only problem? It isn't even Hagan's voice. The following clip from CNN shows the ad and Hagan's response:

Even Republican consultant Alex Castellanos admits,

"When you're making ads that say there is no god, it usually means your campaign doesn't have much of a prayer. It's not the best thing to be doing here."

You know what they say about broken clocks.

Those of us who have been following and supporting Hagan's campaign are outraged, but tactics of this nature are enough to horrify any decent American, regardless of party affiliation. I received the following email from Hagan's campaign this morning:

Elizabeth Dole should be absolutely ashamed of herself. I can't begin to tell you how outraged I am that she has attacked my Christian faith.

Her latest ad is fabricated and pathetic.

Our nation is in a crisis and the only solution Elizabeth Dole has to offer is mud and slime and more of the same. Wall Street was just bailed out and our economy is in shambles and Dole is doing whatever she can to talk about anything BUT the issues.

Enough. This kind of politics will not be tolerated.

Help me respond by paying for an ad directly addressing these claims attacking my Christian faith.

We already have two response ads -- watch them -- and please donate $100, $50 or $25 to help me directly respond to Dole's desperate, divisive and deplorable ads in a third ad.

I don't know what things were like when she grew up in North Carolina, but the North Carolina I raised my children in would never condone this kind of personal slander.

I was raised going to Sunday school and church every week and I raised my children that way. The Hagan family has attended the First Presbyterian Church for over 100 years -- that's where I've taught Sunday school.

If Senator Dole wants to pass judgment on my faith, that's her right -- but that's not the kind of response MY faith teaches.

Join me in taking a stand against the same old tired rhetoric that divides people by contributing today.

Your support at this critical time is imperative to our success.

But even more so -- your support right now is imperative to change the politics of our country.

We need a new direction -- leadership that will bring people together, not tear people apart. Leadership that offers new solutions, not the same old, tired rhetoric.

The people of North Carolina have had enough. No more. It's about time for a change.

Hagan has released the following ads in response:

Brief and effective, but Hagan needs our help to keep them on the air and respond with a third. It's time to fight back against old politics, and you can do more than just support our nominee for president. We can take this country back state by state and seat by seat. Hagan needs our help to fight this vicious smear, and we don't have much time left. She needs our help now. Let's show the Republican party that tactics like these aren't going to work anymore. Let's send Elizabeth Dole packing. Please CONTRIBUTE to Hagan's campaign - in this late hour, even the smallest amount will make a huge difference. Let's take a stand against slander and divisiveness and show Senator Dole that her kind of politics is outdated and ineffective. Let's put her out on the street and put a good Democrat who knows the meaning of integrity in her place.

Re: Just Another "Godless" Democrat?

I emailed Senator Dole today and voiced how, as a native North Carolinian, offensive I find her.  We deserve better than her, actually ANY state deserves better than her.  She is a narcissistic, egotist who needs to be brought down a peg or two.  It just infuriates me that she thinks she can stop into town every couple of years and yell abortion is murder, gays are going to hell and Kay Hagan is an atheist and we will lock-step keep voting for her.  It's time to take down pure evil and I intend to do all I can until next Tuesday to insure that Elizabeth "Liddy" pure evil Dole is thoroughly taken down!

Re: Just Another "Godless" Democrat?

This ad and the ongoing backlash remind me of the "Hitler" ad the GOP ran against Tim Kaine in 2005.  I don't think this desperate move will help Dole at all.

Re: Just Another "Godless" Democrat?

Dole clearly proved she's just another piece of Republican political trash that needs to be run out of Washington. Hopefully by next Tuesday she'll be Just Another "Jobless" Senator.

Re: Just Another "Godless" Democrat?

It is amusing to see an incumbent flounder as badly as Dole is, she is lashing out in every direction in panic.  The more desperate the attacks, the more dire the internal polling I suspect.

I wonder what Bob thinks about this

Bob Dole wasn't so hot on dirty politics.  Bob Dole was willing to lose honorably.  Bob Dole meant what he said and said what he meant.  Bob Dole needs to have a little talk with his wife about actually living in a state that you're representing.  Bob Dole.  Bob Dole.  Bob... zzzz.

Re: Just Another "Godless" Democrat?

This disgusting ad made me immediately go donate to Hagan's campaign.  I hope it helps her pay for the answer ads. I'm not from NC, but sure want it to go blue!

I love that Hagan ad!

In the opening seconds: "She even faked my voice" -- boom -- that's the way to call out these bastards on their sleaze.

An idea for Obama's remaining campaign moolah

A large donation to the congressional target of the nastiest GOP attack ad of the day.

(I hope) this is good news

I really think this ad has already backfired.  The media is covering it massively, far more than the original ad got exposure.  All the local newspapers have slammed Dole for this, and it's getting a fair amount of coverage on tv.  Hagan's response was pitch-perfect, especially the 'bearing false witness' part.  She's been successfully pushing the 'carpetbagger' meme as well as linking her opponent to Bush and Washington, and this is only damaging Dole's reputation more.

It's awesome, and kind of surprising, that in the space of a few years, this seems to have become a country where the public doesn't simply doesn't tolerate the more offensive smears.  If we stay like this, the GOP will likely be marginalized for decades.

lawsuit

A few hours ago, Hagan sued for defamation:

GREENSBORO, NC- Kay Hagan filed a lawsuit against Elizabeth Dole and the Elizabeth Dole Committee, Inc., after Dole declined to remove her new television ad, described by North Carolina newspapers as "indecent," a "gross misrepresentation," "dishonest," and "beyond the bounds of acceptable political disagreement."

"Like her time in the U.S. Senate, Elizabeth Dole has made her choices here, and that's her decision," said Hagan Campaign Communications Director Colleen Flanagan said. "But it's equally our decision not to allow someone to slander Kay Hagan, impugn her character, her convictions and her faith, without any consequences. Elizabeth Dole would love nothing more than to distract from the issues and her record for the last 5 days of the campaign. In filing this suit, we've made clear that these kind of despicable tactics will not be tolerated, and our campaign is moving forward with the most important task at hand: defeating Elizabeth Dole, and giving North Carolina's families a voice in the U.S. Senate that they've been sorely missing."

The 2008 version of Helms' "Hands" ad
In the 90s, Jesse Helms used a race-baiting ad against Harvey Gantt (BTW, Helms' campaign manager was Charlie Black - yes, that one). Elizabeth Dole doesn't have the luxury of running against a minority, so she went after Kay Hagan's...faith?

Ewww. Bad move.

In the South you can say a lot of things, but going after somebody's belief in God is likely to result in a fight, and I mean a physical one. People in Greensboro know Kay Hagan and they know her family. Her family has attended the same Presbyterian church for over 100 years and Kay is a lifelong member. These are irrefutable facts.

What Dole has done with this sleazy ad is step into a very deep, very stinky pile of her own making. Liddy Dole's days as a U.S. Senator are numbered. This attack will backfire, and it will sink her.
