Speaker Pelosi 'has no rivals'

Her many admirers in the lefty sphere will be delighted to learn that, should the Dems take the House, La Signora P will be Speaker.

Thus spake The Hill, at least.

The operative consideration is this: unless there is an anti-Pelosi ready, willing and able to go in for the kill and pull it off, no rep will want to risk retaliation from Nance for voting any other way than for her.

And, since (by The Hill) there isn't a Pelosi-killer, it's game over.

Even our old friend Cuellar is quoted as pledging support. After a fashion:

If you don't moderate, and if you go too much to the extreme, then that could affect us down the line," Cuellar said. "But I feel that she would be a moderate, and I look forward to working with her."

¡Madre de Dios!

Now, Pelosi doesn't inspire much confidence in me. But, if there's truly no one who can beat here, then I suppose Oscar had it right:

It's a waste of time to worry
Over things that they have not;
Be thankful for
The things they got!

Can't help wondering what, in Pelosi's case, those might be, exactly?

Re: Speaker Pelosi 'has no rivals'

my thoughts exactly.  and what disgusts me more is the mentioning of rahm emanuel (D-corporations and AIPAC) as a candidate for Speaker.

Re: Lloyd Doggett for Speaker

Pelosi would be just fine, but Lloyd Doggett would be great for Majority Leader! Do you think he has the muscle to wrestle Hoyer out of the job? I sure hope so.

Re: Speaker Pelosi Will Be Fine

The main job of the Speaker is to manage your caucus and move legislation.  Pelosi is excellent at this stuff as the 88% party unity she was able to garner last year shows.  This was the highest mark for the Dems since 1956.

She sucks on TV but the fact of the matter is the average voter doesn't watch Meet the Press or the other shows where she is likely to appear.  No party ever lost control of the House because their Speaker wasn't telegenic.  Look at Denny Hastert for crying out loud!

Pelosi will be a good Speaker because she has the legislative skills to do the job.

Re: Speaker Pelosi 'has no rivals'

The real other candidate for Speaker is Rahm Emanuel.  Honestly, that's your choice - Pelosi, or Rahm.  I think Pelosi's done a good job in most respects (there are some things I disagree with her on, and they aren't trivial, mind) but she'd have had to an absolutely awful job before I'd want Rahm as the leader, let alone as Speaker.  Nancy's heart, at least, is in the right place. Rahm's isn't.  He won't even try to move progressive legislation.
