Congressional Black Caucus defends the lobbyists!

The horrible 'deficit reduction' bill passed the House 216-214, I read. I go to THOMAS to check on the guilty Dems concerned - and find an unexpected little horror.

Part of the (pretence at) post-Abramoff house-cleaning in the US let's not mention the ethics truce House is H Res 648, which removes the floor privileges from former members who are working as lobbyists. It passed 379-50, and Tom DeLay voted against (surprise, surprise!).

But 19 Dems voted against too.

And the CBC is disproportionately represented in their ranks:

Clay
Hastings (FL)
Jackson (IL)
Johnson, EB
Jones (OH)
McKinney
Towns
Wynn

(Kucinich and Murtha joined them.)

Owens (NY) voted Present.

What gives? What a time for Dems to send a mixed message!

Almost as bad as Pelosi's.

Re: Congressional Black Caucus defends the lobbyis

several dems voted against it because they thought it didnt go far enough and didnt want to give the republicans and artificial 'victory' so it looked like they were doing something when they really werent

Right.  And also it looks like not a single Democrat voted for the main bill...

Re: Congressional Black Caucus defends the lobbyis

The CBC is oftten against progressive issues like campaign finance reform and estate tax because of the perverse interests in majority minority districts.

These guys are all in super safe district, with money rolling in from first generation black millioniares and lobbyists that they are addicted to like crack.  Even though they never have any oposition except in primaries.
