Hillary Even Takes Money From Pakistan Lobbyist

There is an article on Huffington that says that Hillary takes lobbyist money from Pakistan.  We know Hillary takes money from lobbyist, but from Pakistan??  What is wrong with this picture?

There is no law against taking money from Pakistan lobbyist, but it does bring up a lot of questions.

"While not prohibited by law, accepting such a donation necessarily raises questions about the effect this relationship--and similar ones--will have on her policies in the White House towards Pakistan should she win the 2008 contest, or in the US Senate should she not. The influence of money is never straightforward, of course."

Another candidate who is taking lobbyist money from Pakistan is Joe Biden.  He has called for a freeze on aid to Pakistan.  But you still have to wonder what kind of influence will this money buy.

stupid

You make it sound Clinton is accepting money from a foreign country... Geez, get a break...

The correct question is whether John has accepted money from lobbyists' spouses, kids etc...

Re: stupid

are u still on vacay?

I kinda miss our back and forth banter. I've kept you alive in my sig line, but people get bent out of shape and i got troll rated for using it once.

Re: stupid

I only wish it were a vacation!!!

I just got back home a few days ago and am still recovering from jetlag.  As far as the sig line, I have to smile every time I see it because I know I'm either terribly loved or terribly hated by at least one person.

Oh well, we'll be on the same side again soon enough.  Hopefully on my side, but either way...

Re: stupid

There is nothing "correct" about that question, in fact it is quite incorrect.  I certainly don't want anyone making assumptions of my politics based on the politics of my parents.  Two correct questions: is he accepting money which is being funneled by lobbyists through their wives, kids, etc.  And why isn't this even a question for the Clinton campaign?

Re: Hillary Even Takes Money From Pakistan Lobbyis

I don't really get it.  Cassidy & Associates is a major lobbying firm with dozens of lobbyists; I'm sure they have many clients.  It's not clear to me why donations from this lobbying firm should be considered "money from Pakistan" other than the fact it grabs headlines.

The lack of transparency is, of course, a reason why lobbyist donations are so problematic in general.

Re: Hillary Even Takes Money From Pakistan Lobbyis

It's not just donations from this firm, it is donations from this person, the one who signed the contract to do the lobbying work.  There's no perfect way out of this until sweeping campaign finance reform, but that doesn't mean we can't, or we shouldn't, start somewhere.  For both Obama and Edwards, they have said well one place we can start is to draw the line is between people who are registered lobbyists and those who are not.  It is not a perfect solution but it is a start.

Re: Hillary Even Takes Money From Pakistan Lobbyis

According to Teachout's post, the lead lobbyist is Robin Raphel.  I don't see any donations from that person to any candidate.

The lobbying contract is signed by Gerald Cassidy, but he's the president of the firm.  He may very well sign all the contracts.

I get mildly annoyed by some of these gotchas because I'm a lawyer, and like a lobbyist, I have a great many clients.  I might be handling a case for Exxon (I'm not) amongst my dozens of cases, but if I send money to John Edwards, it would be misleading to say "Exxon's lawyer gives to Edwards!"  It's my money and I give regardless of who my clients are, but even if I were making a donation based on my clients' interests, it wouldn't necessarily be because of Exxon as opposed to one of my other clients.

Re: Hillary Even Takes Money From Pakistan Lobbyis

Exactly.  Which is why drawing the line at registered Federal Lobbyists is a fair line to draw and anything outside that line is unfair territory for criticism or accusation of hypocrisy.

Re: Hillary Even Takes Money From Pakistan Lobbyis

Are you familar with conflicts of interests? What is your day job? It's not only the actual conflict that matters, but also the perception of it. Arguing to the voters that we are different than the GOP when in fact the GOP can pull up examples like this to say- see that's not true- is why this matters. It creates the appearance of impropriety just as much as it would if say the front page diarists were paid by the campaign.

Why Hillary Can Not be nominee

This is one of many reasons why Hillary can not be the nominee. She has way to much dirty laundry hanging around. This issue will be brought up the republicans if Hillary is the nominee. It does not matter if Hillary really takes money from Pakistan lobbyists, the republicans will find a way to convince the voters that she does take the money. I guess you can add Pakistan lobbyists to the Hsu scandal, the Chinese immigration situation, the First Lady papers being release, etc. If Hillary's the nominee then the democrats lose. After last week's debate, I think people realize how weak Hillary is as a candidate. If she can not stand up to herself with Edwards and Obama going after her then there is no way in hell she will withstand any right wingers going after her. She can't keep playing the gender card throughout the whole campaign.

Re: Why Hillary Can Not be nominee

Please, so the Republicans will only go after Hillary?  They won't say that JRE is an "ambulance chaser" or that Obama has no experience whatsoever.  I have more confidence that she will not pull a Kerry and take it, after all, she has practice at it.
