The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

Recently I purchased the full series of the original Twilight Zone on DVD.  One of the outstanding episodes is entitled, "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," and is nominally about an invasion of Earth by extraterrestrials.  Rather than conquer the earthlings outright, the aliens operate behind the scenes to cause slight disruptions in the lives of regular townsfolk - electricity turns on and off without explanation, cars start and stop running, etc. - until the townsfolk become paranoid with fear and allow their prejudices against one another to rise to the surface.  In the end, the townsfolk blame each other for the strange occurrences and destroy themselves, without the aliens ever having to lift a finger against them.  The obvious subtext of the show is that we are often our own worst enemies.

Allow me to suggest that that is exactly what is going on today, with the Republicans playing the role of the aliens and Democrats playing the role of the townsfolk.  Clearly there are Republican forces on the ground in Denver, and on the blogs, who intend to sew dissension in our ranks.  There are also those who still are nursing a grudge, from both camps, and who are using these obvious ploys to get in a few cheap shots against the other side.  Still others are innocent bystanders in all of this but have been tarred by the insults of a few and thus have been drawn into a conflict that no one can win.  All the while, McCain and the Republicans are laughing at us.

This constitutes my humble request that all of those currently involved in flame wars and who genuinely wish the best for the Democratic Party stop for a second and think about the bigger picture.  Republicans are trying to tear down the party.  The media is trying to tear down the party.  Certain people here are trying to tear down the party.  Don't let them.  If you need to, take a break from blogging until the convention is over.  Donate - your money, your time, your sweat.  Talk to someone in a civil manner.  Do something productive.  Let the pros - the Clintons, Obama, Biden, Kennedy, etc. - handle the convention, that's what they get paid for.  Give them the opportunity to set things right.  Don't give McCain the Democratic bloodshed he craves.

Keep Maple Street free of monsters for a few more days.

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

Love the scene, where suddenly, the lights are going on in different houses and people are pointing and yelling...

"it's them...."

"No, it's them....

And, the scene at the end, with the aliens explaning:

No large invasion force is needed, these people will defeat themselves.

Rec'ed, and much appreaciate homage to Rod Serling and the best TV show of all time.

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

I only wish that the aliens didn't have to spell the whole thing out at the end, but maybe that was required by the network or whomever approved the episode.

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

Great post r. I want to add something here.

Many people complain and trash the admin. of this site for the trolls but most forget...

If you're a TU and you see an obvious troll, h'rate on site!

Feed em donuts like their name was Chief Wiggum!

I personally h'rate more than I can count and I have never recieved a warning or been sent an email by Jerome, Todd, Singer or Orton.

Why? Maybe b/c h'rating trolls is the reason we've got the O button for. I propose we start moderating more and complaining less. Their is an obvious troll diary on the Rec.List by a McBlogger. Why don't we start by h'rating that fool on spot?

Same goes for many other "obvious" trolls. If the admins. have a look through the hidebin and see the same person being h'rated everyday it would make their job easier as well.

Let's keep this place civil and free of troll peeps!

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

I have a hard time deciding whether I should do that, or not.  I've watched other reputable folks get TR'ed into oblivion by trolls, with seemingly no recourse.  And TR'ing someone on sight, troll or not, seems to go against the guidelines.

Well, they are usually trolling when and starting up flamewars when they are on this blog so I don't see how this is against the guidelines. I'm doing something about the trolls, not whining and trashing the blog or the people who run this.

H'rate on site.

They didn't really spell it out. Serling was taking a shot at HUAC, using sci-fi as the cover. He had the aliens very clearly spell out what he was saying about the blacklist and the witch hunts. Hiding the subtext in plain sight exposition.

I really think better writing and art comes out of varying levels of censorship that open artistic freedom. The artists have to work harder and be more subtle in getting their meaning across, such as the similar "Crucible". Compare to "Piss Christ" and other such stuff, which just seems self-indulgent and provocative for the sake of being provocative in comparison.

Love so many episode, not sure where to start...

Love the Episode called "The Hunt" where a man and his dog are tricked into almost walking into Hell disguised as a very plush heaven..

But, the dog balks. And the Gate Keeper says "God don't allow no dogs in here..."

He walks down the road, and finds the REAL Saint Peter, who welcomes him and the dog right on in..

When he explains what happened down the road, St Peter laughs and explains..

"They don't like dogs down there. A man will walk blindly right into hell, but even Satan ain't smart enough to fool a dog...."

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

Absolutely excellent TV reference.  I actually gave a copy of this episode (I, too, forked over a ridiculous amount of money to get all of the DVDs) to my friend who was teaching a small group discussion course and he used it in his classes for a couple years.

Time Enough At Last, The Midnight Sun, and An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (even though it wasn't originally a TZ episode) are some of my favorites, although they don't have anything to do with your diary.  Anyway, you make some great points in relation to the infighting occurring here.

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

Thanks.  I have a special spot in my heart for Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, even though it's a little bit cheesy.  I love the Wikipedia description of the gremlin as a "surly teddy bear."

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

My personal faves are probably "And When The Sky Was Opened" (the ending sends chills up my spine every single time), "He's Alive" (a brilliant piece about fascism and the supremacy movement), "Death Ship", "Two"... hell, just about all of them. Twilight Zone is one of the best shows ever made. It'd never last these days.

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

Did you see the remake of the show that they tried to reintroduce as the Twilight Zone in 2002?  Forest Whitaker was the host and the song was done by the lead singer of the band Korn.  Jessica Simpson, Method Man, Usher, Jeremy Piven, and Jaime Presley were some of the people that starred in the first and only season.  Not bad people by any means, but it sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Apparently one of the episodes is a remake of "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" but the aliens are replaced with terrorists... seriously.  I never actually saw an episode but I can only imagine.

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

God, I mercifully forgot about that one. Same with the series in the 80s and the movie. They all try to recreate what Serling did and they all fail miserably. Because nobody can write like Rod Serling did.

He wasn't being precious or ironic with that shit, he MEANT it. He was obsessed with man's constant urge to self-destruct and the precarious ledge our society sits on. Every single day we're simply one evil man and one bad decision away from destruction. And yet we keep going. I wonder if he'd have predicted that.

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

That was the first TZ episode I watched at the tender age of 5 or 6 (with a babysitter, because my parents knew better), and I had nightmares about it for years.

Yeah, that thing freaked me out the first time I saw it.  Then, when I got the DVD, I watched it again and thought to myself, "That might be the worst monster costume in film history."

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

Okay, we all know we're having a huge influx of trolls, PUMA trolls, McMansion trolls, etc.
The question becomes, what do we do about them?
Do we fill their diaries with hundreds of comments? NO. (did everyone get that?)
Do we "shame rec" their diaries? NO.

When you give attention to trolls, it keeps them coming back. So stop giving them attention and rec and comment in the good diaries.
Like this one.

My favorite episode

"Number 12 Looks Just Like You"  Where a girls tries to rebel against a society where everyone looks alike and thinks alike, and when sad, drinks some "liquid smile".  Unfortunately, sounds like where our society is going now

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

It helps if you view MyDD as one large place where trolls congregate.  I know it's a stretch, but if you can just make that conceptual leap, you won't take everything so seriously.

You won't take anything seriously at all.  OpenLeft is better.

Re: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street

"The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own for the children, and the children yet unborn."
