This Poison has got to stop

Good evening all.

In the last few days I have seen several diaries which can, at best, be described as poison.  I don't care, I really do not care if the hit-piece is against Senator Obama or Senator Clinton.  That is not the point.  When I see articles from black-power websites that make references to "field slaves" and "house slaves" used to demonstrate that one of our candidates was bought and paid for by the folks who are screwing over people in those subprime mortgages, I am agog.  That website was obviously very biased.  And this is only one example.

Guys, we have got to come to terms with something.  There are some folks here who do not have our best interests in mind.  And there are some others who have crossed a line and are simply doing harm because they themselves are hurt.  We will all lose if this continues.

I do not want to see more diaries or comments that serve only to destroy a fellow Democrat.  I cannot abide by this anymore.  No sane person should.

If someone were to take the time to post hit-pieces on Senator Clinton (Dick Morris crap, for example) I would react the same as I am now.  We are using some base and filthy garbage to tear into one another, and this can not stand.

My purpose is not to get Clinton supporters behind Senator Obama.  I'll leave that for another time.  However, if all someone can do to support their candidate, whoever that is, is to waste our time with poorly-sourced attack pieces, then they have no place here.

This is not my site.  The admins are welcome to toss me for being so presumptuous, but I will speak up.  If you've got something solid that is pertinent to the race and moreover is substantial, then by all means, bring it up.

But if instead you've got a loony website that is for one of our candidates using rumors that the Republicans might have something vague that hurts one of our guys, do not post it.

Either such a person wants us to live in fear, or they are a Republican agent provocateur, or they are simply lashing out and offer nothing meaningful.

I am not saying any of this because I support Barack Obama.  I am saying this because I support the Democratic Party.

I beg this website's administrators to please consider the harm it does to the party when filth such as we have recently seen is allowed to prosper.  Either this community stands for something, or it stands against something.  I hope that you good people run this site because you believe in the sorts of things that both of our candidates are fighting for.

Allowing baseless and loony conspiracy theory crap to foster hurts all of us.  Please, everyone, can we at least limit the debate to actual issues that actually matter?  Not who fired what agent between what books?  How can that possibly matter?

For the record, I have assiduously avoided mentioning any of the scandals, and potential scandals, that involve Senator Clinton.  I do not wish to make things worse.  We all know that such material exists.  I will not besmirch Senator Clinton by mentioning any of it.  I will end this plea with a beginning.  I will not lower myself, or the rest of us, to yet another eye for an eye blight by hitting back.

Hitting back simply means we hurt ourselves.

********************************************************** Wow. Okay, to those of you who apparently do not like to read the words in the diary, or to those who insist on adding your own words so you can find something to get mad at, the whole reason I make mention of the existence of scandals involving Senator Clinton was to make the point that I'm willing to hold my fire because it seves no good purpose to attack Senator Clinton. If I had made no mention of her at all, some would likely be attacking me for saying we should only avoid hitting Obama. I didn't want to come across that way, so I made a point about not hitting Senator Clinton. If you want to take an olive branch as a slap to the face, that's your call, but that's also not what I wrote. Calm down and re-read what I wrote. I wasn't attacking, and I wasn't being snide. If you want to read it that way, go nuts. That is no better than masturbation then. That's *all* you, and none of it me.

It's getting toward the Humpty Dumpty stage...

But, given some of the comments I have seen tonight, I was wondering what kind of diaries were on the board today...  I can usually tell by how derisive people get with me...

Amen to that. I would like to add, many of the writers and commenters who spew the most outrageous things are GOP trolls causing trouble. The freepers are amongst us and we should be smarter than to fall for their dirty tricks.

Hillary's acolytes know that after tomorrow...

... they will no longer have the slimmest thread of a rational argument to offer in support of Hillary Clinton being the nominee, and for some of them, that means their world ends.

I mean, it's getting to the point where all their best arguments sound like this one.

So they are lashing out in anger and frustration, trying to find someone to blame besides their wholly inadequate candidate for her utter failure to capitalize on all the advantages she started with a year ago.

Our only hope for a return to sanity is that they finally get over the anger phase by Puerto Rico, and can move on from there.

3 of 4 object to Obama "Crowning". Pew

How about this conspiracy? Obama's choice to crown himself victor and his supporters and media friends who sought to "validate" his presumptuous attempt to push Clinton from the race has generated widespread disapproval among the electorate.  Members of all parites equally disturbed.  Effort to remove Clinton being watched by 8 times as many Americans as the 11% who watched stories of Jenna's wedding!

Conspiracy to get rid of competition before the nomination vote in Denver is viewed as unseemly and inappropriate behaviour by most Americans, or worse.

New Chicago Tribune article on Obama getting rid of all the competition in his first race shows us this is not a new tactic for him.

Is this the kind of substance you are looking for?
Check out this article and measure the behaviour against the words that drew you to him.  You may better understand why resistance is growing.  Turns out we should have done more research a lot sooner.

That has precisely zero to do with the purpose of this diary.  If you want to argue this point, that's more than fair.  Please keep it to where it matters.

Can you address the point I was making?

Best Conspiracy Theory Ever

Alice Palmer was Obama's Chicago political mentor.  When she decided to attempt a run for national politics, she asked Obama if he wanted to run for her seat.  She then showed him around the system and introduced him to the political people in Chicago as her protege.

Barack started a campaign for state senate.  Alice Palmer realized, too late, that she would not a national seat.  She came back to Barack and demanded he step down even though he had spent time and money (with her blessing) to make a run for the seat.  She decided to run against him and needed lots of signatures to get on the ballot.  Instead of going out getting them many were faked.

Barack called her on her bullshit and she got kicked off the ballot.  Sounds like he was following the law.  Best conspiracy theory ever.

Re: hypocritical

Oh no...  this is the comment in its entirety with the exception of the commenter's name being referred to and an entreaty for Clinton supporters not to read it...

"I've always heard that the only ones who deride porn are the unloved.  One might say the ugly ones who can never imagine themselves being asked to pose naked.  My quite beautiful wife (an Obama follower) and I used to go to strip clubs together in our younger days.  We had fun too and due to her stunning beauty she never questioned her own sex appeal.

Shall I continue?"

I mean, seriously...  the one might say ugly ones... earned the comment a quick rebuff and a troll-rate...

Re: Sadly, as you type this

I think you are wrong to assume this is primarily the work of  Clinton supporters.  I believe it mostly to be the work of trolls.

I read a comment a week or so ago where the troll bragged about reccing the most ludicrous anti-Obama diaries just to make the site look ridiculous and encouraging others to do so.

If you pay close attention to who's doing what, the familiar pro-Clinton names are either working towards reconcilliation or demanding in a (mostly) positive way that it's not over yet.  ( with a couple notable exceptions)

The real vitriole is coming from identities with nothing positive to say about either candidate, a history of comments  well-deservedly troll-rated,   divisive comments devoid of all content and rating abuse -- clearly trolls.

Don't fall for it.

I believe that I have been extremely gracious, especially given that Obama hasn't actually won yet.  I have repeatedly pledged to support Obama if he is the nominee, and I know of at least ten other Clinton people here who have promised to do the same.

Just because the media says its over doesn't meant that we are going to give up and walk away.  Many of us, I would say most of us have followed our candidate's lead and toned down the rhetoric, as have many of the Obama people.

There are Clinton people still hitting Obama--and I've criticized the ones who've gone over the top.  But at the same time, there are Obama people here who post "unity" diaries that basically say, "It's over.  If you were a real Democrat, you'd give up and endorse Obama."

I think that we edging toward a unified party, but there is blame to go around on all sides.

While we wait for the inevitable fighting, I would like to say I am so excited that Obama will soon be the presumptive nominee.  I plan to work as hard as possible this fall to get him elected.  I have even thought about going to more of a swing state for a couple weeks to have a bigger effect.  I think my support could be more useful in Colorado or Nevada instead of California.  I think democratic chances this fall are amazing and I hope for an Obama presidency and a congressional super-majority.

Re: It's not just Republican trolls......

Alegre occasionally posts at NoQuarter.  I have also posted at NoQuarter.  I stand by every word I have ever written there or here.  Every diary I have posted there, I have posted here and I believe Alegre has done the same.

I think you guys have the wrong impression of Alegre.  She is a loyal, dedicated Democrat and I fully expect that she, like Hillary, will support the nominee.  I have repeatedly asked this question, but I've never gotten a response.  Can you please point me to any xenophobic, racist, over the top diaries she has written?

I think I have read pretty much everything she has written over the last year and I have yet to see anything objectionable.  She is tough.  She's hit him on health care.  She's hit him on NAFTA.  She's hit him on the gas tax.  She's argued that Hillary is more electable.  All within bounds.

I for one, respect and admire Alegre.  Her dedication to her candidate, her passion for the progressive cause, her willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty has been, well, inspirational to me.

Re: bullshit

He is posting rumors to spread them knowing damn well that they are false. You completely miss the problem with what he is doing. I don't care that he labels rumors in his posts the fact that he is dedicating time to them just gives them legitimacy especially when he keeps talking about his "sources" for those rumors.

When you are trying to slander someone you will say anything about them whether true or not and that is what Larry Johnson is doing.  If he was a true progressive he would say, "these are false and people need to do whatever possible to debunk them."

I'll try and move on with my life.

I don't agree with everything that has been posted over there.  I don't agree with what a lot of Clinton people have written here.  Frankly, I think that voting for McCain or not voting at all are bad ideas.  When Obama was getting hit for his association with Rev. Wright in March, I defended him.  When Rev. Wright was getting attacked for his comments at the National Press Club, I defended him.  I also defended the Trinity United Church of Christ against accusations of racism here and here.

I have found a lot of diaries posted at other blogs, most especially the big orange monster whose name shall not be spoken, that are extremely offensive.  I remember one diary in particular, written by a front-page diarist, accusing Hillary of darkening Obama's image in a TV ad, an accusation of blatant race-baiting that has repeatedly been debunked.  As far as I know, a retraction and an apology have never been written by this diarist.  (Please send me the link if I am mistaken.)

I for one am getting sick of people calling others racist just because they come out with facts (or a clearly stated rumor) that are not flattering about the Obamas.  There is a lot to yet come out, and it is people with courage and are unaffected by name-calling who will do and and maybe, just maybe, they can help save us from the impending disaster of 4  more years of Republican rule or 4 years of a pol from Chicago in charge who has had no relevant experience.

And talk about a double standard.  The stuff out there about Hillary is as sexist and as blatantly false as anything I have ever seen in my long lifetime.  So do you go to Kos or here and rant against those people?  Oh, you don't.  I am not surprised.

You support the democratic party? This sexist party led by Dean who gave Edwards his supporters' list of names. I haven't given one red cent to the party since George Bush was embraced by Kennedy at his first state of the union speech therefore making him legitimate and no one in the party stood with the black caucus. In the past 7 years I've only contributed to Dean and Clinton so how come I got the Edwards begging letter? Dean gave him the names of his supporters in exchange for Edwards endorsement to rescue Obama in Kentucky! It sucks and only  if Clinton is on top of the ticket, I will not be voting to keep this corrupt party in power. I've already contributed to Cindy Sheehan campaign to help her unseat "impeachment is off the table Pelosi" and will try to see who's running against "universal health care is off the table Kerry" I'm voting for Nader and have already changed my party affiliation to independent - made a copy and sent it to Dean - wished everybody would do the same to show them that our votes are not to be taken for granted.

Re: This Poison has got to stop

Maybe there's a Nader website that you could be posting to?  'Cause this is a Democratic website.

Re: This Poison has got to stop

I'm right behind you, Suzieg.

THE POISON IS DISENFRANCHISEMENT. That is as Republican as it gets.

I've decided to re-register too, if, on May 31, this party doesn't decide to COUNT THE VOTES. I'm tearing up my Democratic Party registration card, and sending it to Howie Dean. And, I'm not voting for Obama--who is being INSTALLED as the nominee in the exact same manner in which G. W. Bush was INSTALLED as the President in Jan. 2001.

This is DISGUSTING to me; I won't collude in the DISENFRANCHISEMENT of 2.3 MILLION Democrats in two states, and I won't abide by the party's INSTALLATION of their SELECTEE, who got his delegates by gaming the system in RED STATE caucuses.

The majority of DEMOCRATIC votes have gone to CLINTON. She has won more popular votes than Obama. She has won swing states this party needs in November. And she is the most qualified, most experienced, and has a record of accomplishment this party should stand on against the Republicans. If this party chooses to disenfranchise Democrats to install a nominee, I'm done with this party. Period.

-Clinton has not won the popular vote  no matter how you slice it because of the caucus states(do you not care that they would be disenfranchised by HRC's count or does it only matter if it is in HRC's favor?)

-They are going to settle Florida and Michigan on May 31st but you need to keep in mind that Hillary had no problem disenfranchising them until she was losing. Heck, she didn't have any problem disenfranchising every state that voted after February 5th when she claimed she would secure the nomination then.  What is disgusting is how phony Hillary is being because she has lost.

Enough with the nonsense.

What a bullshit diary

'Hey folks, let's not trash each other.  Let's all stand together and let the healing being ... PS Clinton has lots and lots of scandals.  I won't explicitly itemize them here, but just wanted to make sure I mentioned them.'

What, pray tell, did adding that bit at the end do other than EXACTLY what you claim to be decrying?

Dear diarist,

What a lovely diary.  I am so pleased to see you trying to make everybody love each other.  It was a wonderful effort, and is sure to make everybody like each other more.

By the way, I won't actually say "fuck you," but I just wanted everybody to know I was thinking it.

Re: What a bullshit diary

Let me make one thing abundantly clear.  Either there is reciprocity or we are all children.

I wrote what I wrote because I wanted to make it clear that this isn't just about Senator Obama.  If I had made no mention of Senator Clinton you'd very likely be hitting me for what you'd likely describe as a very one-sided diary.

So, if you please, got to hell.  I've tried to be gracious and inclusive.  If you want to find fault with what I've wrote, that's you're call.

But it doesn't speak well of you.

Re: What a bullshit diary

You would have to work hard to be more full of shit.  Where does the mention of Clinton's "scandals" fit into this diary other than to trash her.  Up to that point, it was a good diary.  But when you ended it with "and don't think about a pink elephant," well, all credibility went out the window.

Re: What a bullshit diary

Yep.  I would have to work very hard indeed.....

Are you blind, or just nuts?

The RNC has a dossier 1600 pages long, and more scandals than I care to think of.  Not mentioning it would have been an invitation to dive into all of that.

Part of why I support Senator Obama is that he has studiously avoided smearing her by going into those attacks.  I won't either.

I didn't then, and I haven't now.  Acknowledging the existence of controversy isn't the same as endorsing the worst of it.

Re: There you go again...

Don't bash "the party" because we all need to get behind the "unity pony" for November. And, if you don't "sit down, shut up" and get behind the "unity pony" for November, then you are a REPUBLICAN TROLL! And, just to make sure you sit down, shut up and get with the program, we want to remind you that Clinton is Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

Well, hell no, I won't go. I'm not going along with your "program" or your "unity pony," or your pleading to "save the party." I'm done with this party; I'm sick of this "unity" schtick, and I won't vote for Obama.

If that's what you think I wrote, you can't read very well.  You are seeing what you want to see.  You are spoiling for a fight.

You are being the very poison to which I refer.  Bitter, angry, combative.

Why so mad?
