I Know I'm Going to Get Ripped to Shreds for This

I'm going to do it anyway. I sent this to my candidate today:

Dear Senator Clinton,

I have been reading today that you will hold a rally in NY tomorrow night that will be a pivotal moment in your campaign. There are many rumors circulating and much speculation about what will occur. I understand if you are going to suspend your campaign. I will be elated if you continue your campaign. I would like to ask you to consider the following, however. As a feminist and a woman with two daughters I would ask you not to endorse Senator Obama.

I realize that as a Democrat the conventional wisdom is that you must endorse him to be seen as a team player. The fact is that your team has benched you. Your supporters see this and we are appalled. We have watched as the media and the pundits and your own opponent, a fellow Democrat for crying out loud, have insulted and belittled you time and again. We have watched as the leaders of your party remained silent in the face of the most egregious misogyny. The excuse given when cries of sexism erupted was always "it's not about women, it's about her," as if that made it ok.

The fact is that when Senator Obama dismissed a female reporter with his "sweetie" comment and the boyz with him snickered he showed his true colors, and demonstrated once and for all that the "it's just Hillary" argument is false. I am extremely worried about the fall out of this campaign in terms of what will now be acceptable behavior toward women who compete in traditionally male arenas.

My daughter, as the only natural born citizen in our Canadian immigrant family always used to say "I'm the only one in the family who can be President. I guess I'll have to do it." It was adorable to hear her say that when she was four and five years old and I never doubted that if that was what she wanted, that was what she could do. I doubt it now.

If you choose to fight this all the way, I am behind you. I will be happy to spend the summer fighting the good fight here in Washington state or wherever I would be effective. What I will not do is cast a vote for Senator Obama, period. I will also not cast a vote for anyone who has endorsed him. I will happily go to the polls and vote for any downballot Democrat who has endorsed you. I will write in your name on my ballot if that is allowed in my state, but I will never tick the box next to the name of a man who has condoned and benefitted from the demeaning and subdugation of American women.

Sincerely,

(me)

Fire away. Wait, I know: So you want your candidate to destroy her career? You're not a Democrat. Abortion! War! McCain is a crazy old coot! Sore loser! Sour grapes! Is this snark? Really.

Do your worst. It's water off a duck's back at this point.

Re: I Know I'm Going to Get Ripped to Shreds for T

Okay... so, in your limited scope of concepts about teams, if you get benched, you should not cheer on and support your team?  This is not actually how teams work... if you get benched it is because your contribution was either not as good as some others or detrimental to the team's chances of winning.  Maybe you are just having an off day.  If Peyton Manning gets benched by Tony Dungy because he has thrown 4 interceptions, the rest of the Colts team and fans do not stop supporting their team... or worse, supporting the other team.  The old expression is, "there is no 'i' in team".... There is a "me" though...

Other than that, ummm.... whatever to the rest.

Blind devotion to a person because they have a (D) behind their name pretty much flies in the face of the principles of democracy.

She has been treated just as every politician going back decades or even centuries has been treated. Meaning she has been ridiculed, belittled, and worse.

Do you believe that she should be treated with kid gloves because she is a woman? Do you believe she should be given a free pass from criticism? I thought the entire point of feminism and women's rights was to be treated equally, not to be treated preferentially or treated unequally? Is this not the case?

Here is what I believe. There are many Clinton supporters who are finding sexism and misogyny where they want to find it, just as there are many Obama supporters who find racism where they want to find it.

Truthfully, it sounds like nothing more than whining because your candidate didn't win.

I emphasize that you should vote your conscious. You have months to cool down and think this over. If you still believe that Obama does not deserve your vote, then by all means do not vote for him. But consider the consequences. Votes of conscious did us a lot of good in 2000. This year, a lack of votes could mean someone who really is a misogynist being in the White House (a man who calls his wife a c*nt) or someone who is significantly more in line with your political views and who happened used the term sweetie (universally recognized as a term of endearment).

Vote for who you want, just be able to understand the consequences.

Here's a clue, folks. Anytime someone reduces the issues in this election a punchline ("Abortion! War!"), they obviously don't give a damn about the party or winning the election. The issues don't matter to them; only electing a particular candidate does.

portia, I'm not going to beg and plead for someone like this to pretty please vote for a Democrat. If you're reduced to mocking the issues we all care about, then don't hit the door hit you on the way out. Go laugh about abortion and war with John McCain...he'll appreciate your jaded derision.

Hypocrisy alert.

First of all I am insulted by your use of the word "boyz". For someone who was supposedly sensitive about words, you show a very nasty hypocrisy on the manner of diminutives.

And as for the word "sweetie" Obama apologized for it that same day. I wish I'd heard the Clinton campaign apologize at all (even with a month's delay) for all the "Kool-aid" and "latte sipper" and "egghead" comments I've heard from them in their anti-intellectual and anti-youth bigotry, let alone their effort to use racial divisiveness with their "hard-working people, white people" argument, with their Farrakhans and Wrights.

Indeed I wish I'd heard you condemn those comments, same as I condemned the "sweetie" comment.

So honestly, I don't very much like or appreciate your extreme hypocrisy on this issue.

Re: I Know I'm Going to Get Ripped

I'll be honest and say that I'm not that enthused about an Obama candidacy unless Hillary is on the ticket.  I could also accept Edwards as VP, or Clark and possibly, Biden.

But to me the job of VP goes to the person who can deliver a state, deliver votes, and be able to take over should anything happen to the President.

On those counts, Hillary is by far the most qualified.  To see the most qualified person (who happens to be a woman) not get that job would be a disappointment.

In the old days, the VP was the general election candidate who got the second most votes.  It seems like a good model for the Democratic Party for this year, seeing as how the second place finisher actually received more votes than the nominee.

Your blog spot is an indicator

So instead of a blog that supports your candidate, you have a blog about Obama.

Sort of an indication of your lack of intellectual rigor when you spend more time focused on Obama instead of your own candidate (or the presumptive Republican candidate).  Don't you think?

by Regenman 2008-06-02 12:17PM | 0 recs
Re: Your blog spot is an indicator
Ah...yet another indicator of 'supporter' status.
More focused on attacking the opponent than in promoting the one that they are supposedly supporting.
Such behavior is anything but supportive of her candidate.
Neither Hillary nor Obama would appreciate such 'support'.

Spare Me

Please grow up.   If anybody was dissed by this fellow democrat is was Obama.    Hillary said she and McCain brought a lifetime of experience, Obama brought a speech.   She and McCain had passed her imaginary commander in chief threshold but Obama had not.   All the while Obama said she was qualified and would make a good president.    Pay attention to what hes saying, lay off the noquarter, Hillaryis44 and Taylor Marsh and you just might learn something.

What Obama has said about Clinton

I don't think it's fair to say that Obama has dissed Clinton - not even remotely.  Has he said he thinks he'd be better?  Of course.  That's what candidates do - it's completely fair.

As for what he's said about her, here he is Iowa:

The road here has been long, and that is partly because we've traveled it with one of the most formidable candidates to ever run for this office. In her thirty-five years of public service, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has never given up on her fight for the American people, and tonight I congratulate her on her victory in Kentucky. We have had our disagreements during this campaign, but we all admire her courage, her commitment and her perseverance. No matter how this primary ends, Senator Clinton has shattered myths and broken barriers and changed the America in which my daughters and yours will come of age.

What, exactly, is wrong with this?  I hope I have enemies who say such things about me.

Revenge

I just read through all of the comments, and yeah, you got ripped to shreds because your diary was dumb.  I understand your feelings are hurt that your candidate lost, but I find it hard to believe a sane adult would post such nonsense.  In the simplest terms, you are willing to "chop your nose off to spite your face."

Re: I Know I'm Going to Get Ripped to Shreds for T

If you've already made the decision not to vote for the presumptive Democratic nominee, or anyone who endorsed him, why are you still posting on a progressive Democratic blogsite?

Re: I Know I'm Going to Get Ripped

I won't rip you to shreds but are you suggesting that its now OK for all of us to start playing the gender card?  Since I am a male, I should never vote for a female and vice versa?  After gender bias, maybe a little race bias, religious bias, height, weight, maybe even bias towards disabled people?  Not very American I know and highly unconstitutional but it sounds to me like there are a lot of people that are are all of a sudden perfectly OK engaging in the politics of discrimination.

I don't think she lost over her gender, I think she had a lousy campaign staff with no long-term strategy and a husband who did her absolutely no favors.  It was Bill's mouth that turned me from Hillary to Obama.  If you want to blame some boys, I'd point at all the boys that she has chose to surround herself with.  Mark Penn, Wolfson, Bill himself.  Not to mention she forgot the all important rule.  If the men in your life aren't exactly bright, they damn well better look good in Speedos.
