BOTH Tampa Bay, Florida newspapers endorse Obama!

I'm not one to write a diary usually, but since I live in a part of Florida considered conservatively Republican, I had to make special mention of a significant event. Today the Saint Petersburg Times endorsed Obama for President! along with the Pensacola News Journal, Daytona Beach News Journal, Bradenton Herald, and Tampa Tribune.

This marks the second time in a row in recent history that the Times has broken with tradition and endorsed the Democratic nominee, Sen. John Kerry being their previous choice.

I'll just provide the opening monologue as it's written in the Sunday paper I received today:

"These are uncertain times. Americans' confidence in our leaders and institutions has been shaken by a failing economy, lengthy wars and an erosion of civil liberties. We feel uneasy about our personal financial security, the country's place in the world and what the future holds. Frankly, after eight disasterous years under President Bush, either John McCain or Barack Obama would be a significant improvement and offer more reassuring leadership. But one candidate offers a clearer break with the past, the qualities to unite this country and the vision to lead it in a new direction. With enthusiasm, The Times recommends Barack Obama for president."

[editor's note, by phoenixdreamz] This is pretty big considering that Tampa Bay is the most populous area of Florida, bar none, and unlike the last election, Both the major papers here are on board with Obama.

With Enthusiasm!

I do love that all the papers, while they are dissing McCain are making it a point to stress this not a AGAINST McCain, this is for Obama?

We are not talking about the lessor of two evils here....

Re: With Enthusiasm!

Exactly. While the Times endorsed Kerry, it was more from the lesser vantage point you mentioned. This is on another level altogether.. an unmistakably clear, unqualified, ringing endorsement :)

Re: BOTH Tampa Bay, Florida newspapers endorse Oba

The Bradenton Herald endorsed McCain, not Obama.

The SARASOTA HERALD-TRIBUNE, a much better paper, endorsed Obama.

Re: BOTH Tampa Bay newspapers endorse Obama

Thanks for the correction. I got the information about the additional endorsements from the Obama Blog. It must have been a clerical error: st-petersburg-times-endorses-barack.html

No I didn't realize that. Thanks again for the correction. Not my day apparently.

Delete this diary and check your facts next time:

"ENDORSEMENT: Uncertain times require McCain's Tested vigilance", Tampa Trib., 10/17/08

Re: BOTH Tampa Bay, Florida newspapers endorse Oba

Or at least change the title to reflect the fact that both papers didn't endorse him.

Several Factual Errors

Sorry to rain on your parade, but there are numerous things wrong with this diary.

First off, the Tampa Tribune endorsed McCain. It's not a surprise considering its right-wing tendencies.

Second off, "bar none" my ass. The Bay area is not the most populous area in Florida. I was born and raised in the most populous area in Florida by far: South Florida. That means Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, The Keys. Miami has 4 major sports teams. And Tampa? I don't even think it comes close if you include Orlando/Lakeland/Winter Haven, etc. Sorry, I think you're dead wrong on the facts here.
