Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

Someone needs to tell Senator Barack Obama that the Constitution only provides for one Vice President. Obama has dangled the Vice Presidency in front of three prominent female politicians in a Janus-faced strategy to gain their support.

A well-placed Democratic party source told me in New York on Saturday that Obama has offered the office of the Vice President to super delegates Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill. It is anyone's guess as to how many other super delegates have been given the same pitch.

Using the second highest office in the United States government as super delegate bait cheapens and disrespects the office and the Presidency. Or maybe Obama simply cannot make a decision. Either way, his mendacious behavior is disappointing for the presumptive standard bearer of the Democratic party.

Update: I invite members of the press to ask the aforementioned super delegates about Obama's offer.

Link?  Any evidence that the VP slot has been offered to anyone?  Any empirical evidence of any sort?

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

Ahhh, that's a pretty flimsy basis for a diary, but OK.  Whatever gets the job done for you.  I'm not important enough to know "high ranking officials," but I've worked on presidential campaigns before.  This is the first time I've ever heard of someone "promising" multiple people the VP spot months before such a decision would actually be made.  So forgive me if I'm more than a bit skeptical.

More substantively, all of the individuals you named would make fantastic VP choices.  So I'm actually encouraged by that.

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

all of them, do you think they were each dumb enough to believe him?  The first vice-presidents club? I'll bet that this is news to Bill Richardson. Who else do you think he's promised it too?  As a Hillary supporter I'd say that none of them will do the trick for me. Nor would Bill Richardson, but I'd like to know who else he's promised, maybe one of them would be okay, on the off chance that he gets the nom.

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

Screw the vice presidency.  Once Hillary winds up with a majority of the popular vote she end up as our nominee AND as our next PRESIDENT.

After the way BO and his surrogates have so disrespected women during this campaign he's got a lot of nerve thinking he canwipe the slate clean by putting a woman on the ticket.

The rest of what I'm thinking would pribably get me in trouble so I'll stop at that.

This diarist is a former Republican...

If we want to talk about skeletons in closets, maybe we should ask some of these top Clinton diarists about their pasts???

guess that's answered, he's offered them the vp? But the bigger question is why not enough to put him over the top, if he's so won that he'll announce his own win.

by anna shane 2008-05-11 02:03PM | 0 recs
indeed...

all 270 of them... the campaign believes the vice presidency can be divvied up so that each of the superdelegate supporters will receive at LEAST four days in office over the first term. Clever, innovative strategy really.

I also have it from an upper level source that each of the Obama voters has been offered a new Prius or, at minimum, a grande latte in return for their vote, firstborn child and immortal soul.

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

I'm concerned about his skeletons but my real worry is his flimsy resume.  IF he gets the non, he damn well better find someone with extensive foreign policy/militay/diplomatic experience.

As for a woman as vp, it won't get him one extra vote.  We've been there, done that.

and those other supers...

came around due to the campaign's having obtained compromising photos, for certain. The use of such blackmail to take the superdelegate lead has- entirely coincidentally- coincided with Obama's repeated electoral victories in order to conceal his underhanded tactics.

This is really off the deep end, Alegre... "of course it's credible- it's just the sort of thing he would do!" I've readily admitted in the past many things I could see appealing in Hillary Clinton's candidacy... it's not enough for me to vote for her. If you need to tear down Barack Obama with unsubstantiated rumor in oder to justify your opposition, you need to go back and take a good long look at his record and decide whether him being an underhanded, sexist, mysoginistic racist makes any sense whatsoever.

no, it's not from a "source"...

it is from a MyDD diarist. Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

This was my first thought when I read this diary as well. Unless your source (giving the benefit of the doubt on the existence of, and exact wording used by, the source) was physically in the room each time the offer was made, I would assume each of the three mentioned (and I would think at least several others) was offered a spot on the short list of VP choices.

None of which is surprising, given these three appear on pretty much every armchair political analysts list of likely short list candidates.

I can't see Obama outright offering the VP spot to multiple people both because I'd like to think he has shown he's savvier than that kind of clumsy political move and because offering a short list spot does the same thing without poisoning the people who don't get the nod against him in the future.

I didn't suggest you ask Barack, I suggested you ask the women.  This is what reporters to, they report from sources.  On blogs this stuff is okay, all the women have to do is deny it.

Yes, but

reporters generally don't spend their time chasing down wild stories from incredible sources, such as those that regularly make the wrecked lists at MyDD, NoQuarter or Hillaryis44.

Wow. The fact that I now have no qualms about lumping this site in with those other two says worlds about the quality of discourse MyDD has sunk to.

Just out of curiosity, would picking an experienced and well-qualified individual who happens to be a woman satisfy you?  Because all of the names mentioned above are fantastic choices on their merits.  A point that your post seems to dismiss out of hand.

Senator Clinton would make a good VP choice.  So would other people.  What's wrong with considering other, well-qualified individuals if Obama does in fact win the nomination?

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

Please don't dismiss those women as tokens. Sen. McCaskill has served in public office for over 25 years, trailblazing her way through while saddled with a spouse who had three times the negatives of Bill Clinton and none of the positives. Hillary Clinton has accomplished a lot in her life, but I'd say Claire McCaskill's path was tougher.

Unfortunately this seems like standard operating practice for Obama.  Either offer to give them money for their endorsement--oh I mean funding their campaign--or offering positions of power before the primary is over.

but each of the people here you've mentioned are already endorsers of Obama.  I guess this is a way he makes sure they don't change their mind.

not a preconceived notion

I am not surprised at all.  There have been hints of this in Obama's campaign since february.  I don't think Obama is a bad person, he is a politician doing what he has to do to keep his vote secure.

Remember him purging all of his California delegates, and then backtracking on that? This what he felt he had to do to make sure his delegates don't change their minds.  This is going to go on all summer, especially if by August he still doesn't have the numbers or if he is nervous about the vote at the convention.

Its politics.

maybe he misspoke, maybe the girls already know and plan to share, maybe maybe maybe, but if this is true, and it has a ring of truth, then the three girls will find out and so will any others and they'll know and that could prove interesting. This is what DA's do, they make the charges public and then more come forward.  It is funny that he thinks he needs to make promises though. What else has he promised, and to whom?

I find it comical that you expect us to believe

that someone high up in the Democratic Party (and not even the campaign, which are the ones who would know) would leak this to a blogger and not a reporter.  I know you don't believe Obama has integrity, but his supporters (and many non-supporters I might add) do.  And superdelegates don't need to be promised posts to endorse him and campaign for him.  But maybe you're not used to that kind of integrity?

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

weak excuse for a diary. For one thing I'm sure Sen Al Gore was a super delegate when Bill Clinton picked him. Your argument lacks substance. Are you arguing that Sen Obama would not want Sen Clinton to be his vice president so he's looking at other women candidates, and your angry that he would do such a thing?

If what you are saying is true, way is it a bad thing that he look at the wide range of possibilities. Or are you angry that they happen to be super delegates?

Or you just don't like that Sen Clinton is trailing and you want a reason to trash Sen Obama?......

The answer is very clear. No need to respond.

Re: Obama wants a woman to be Vice President

All the candidates have a short list of potential running mates.  I'm sure Hillary does too.  It's all good, nothing suspicious about this type of activity.

Of course Obama has to talk to several potential running mates to see if they would even want to run.  He can't just pick one person in case that person decides not to accept the VP offer.

I hope Obama picks a female for running mate.  It would be wonderful to have the first AA president and first woman VP.  Cross your fingers people!!!

by hienmango 2008-05-11 04:28PM | 0 recs
This is quite simply NOT true.

It can't be. Here's why.

Obama can't have "offered" the vice presidency to anyone. He can have had preliminary discussions with a number of people, and I hope and suspect he has, but selecting a running mate requires one hell of a lot of vetting. Any VP candidate would be investigated 9 ways to Sunday before anything would be "offered". Ever since the Thomas Eagleton deal candidates are really careful about checking out their running mates before putting them on the ticket.

I heard recently that Obama's VP team had really just started the process recently when it became clear he'd be the nominee. Unless the diarist has some backup they can post, or multiple sources, then this strikes me as just flamethrowing to heat up Hillary supporters.

I'd like to see a woman V.P.

I hope what the diarist says is true, because when I see V.P. potential lists at the Washington Post, 80-90% of the names on the list are white men.

So, I'm very much in favor of having a woman V.P.  (No, I don't believe men know as much about abortion, rape, child care, and equal pay issues as women do), and so I HOPE that Obama will select a woman as his running mate.  The more women he considers, the more likely he is to find a good match who has:

1).  National credibility;

2).  Experience campaigning;

3).  Few skeletons;

4).  Compares well to men who have been V.P. nominated in the past, in terms of name recognition, experience, leadership and political skills, fundraising ability (unlike Geraldine Ferraro, for example);

5).  Someone whom women and men will feel very enthused about and more inclined to vote for.

First off this is nonsense.  What a remarkable source you have that no one else in the universe has.  What a load of crap and a thinly disguised troll.

Further, this diary is an insult to the Governors in question.

The diarist clearly implies that none of the Governors would be qualified to be VP, and that they only got the offer because they had a superdelegate vote to trade for it.

I'll tell you one thing, I support any of these hard working folks for VP before HRC.
