Turns out they got it wrong, I apologize to everyone on this. I was kind of shocked on the original story.

I'll say it again.

Obama is soft.  Like custard.  He rolls over for Fox and he goes easy on McCain.  If the roles were reversed, McCain would rip Obama to shreds.

Obama is not ready for the type of general elections campaign the Republicans and their friends at Fox News will have in store.

Has he agreed to go Imus too?

Maybe the CBC should give me a call, see if he'll change his mind about the debate.

Well, reality check time!

McCain: Dems Should Be More Like Obama

By Greg Sargent

McCain: "I hope Democrats in Congress will heed the advice of one of their leading candidates for President, Senator Obama"

Obama responds:
Progress in Iraq cannot be measured by the same ideological fantasies that got us into this war, it must be measured by the reality of the facts on the ground, and today those sobering facts tell us to change our strategy and bring a responsible end to this war."

   "No matter how much this Administration wishes it to be true, the idea that the situation in Iraq is improving because it only takes a security detail of 100 soldiers, three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships to walk through a market in the middle of Baghdad is simply not credible or reflective of the facts on the ground."

   "What we need today is a surge in honesty. The truth is, the Iraqis have made little progress toward the political solution between Shiia and Sunni which is the last, best hope to end this war. I believe that letting the Iraqi government know America will not be there forever is the best way to pressure the warring factions toward this political settlement, which is why my plan begins a phased withdrawal from Iraq on May 1st, 2007, with the goal of removing all combat troops by March 31st, 2008."

On "ideological fantasies":

I don't oppose all wars. And I know that in this crowd today, there is no shortage of patriots, or of patriotism. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other arm-chair, weekend warriors in this Administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.

From: Barack Obama: I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars.

~~~~~~~
To the diarist: what was the context in which Obama made this appearance. For the record, I don't oppose Dems appearing on Fox "News" and confront their lies head-to-head. In a debate format, however, the host gets to set the table with the questions asked etc, which can be cast to slam Dems and slant the debate.
Don't really know
I don't know any more than the link says, seems to be a sit-down interview?
its not so much that obama is going on Fox, the point is Obama did make a specific pledge to freezeout Fox didn't he?
Which is why some said he didn't need to make his rejection of the 1st debate in Nevada explicit.
Draw your own conclusions but it sure don't look too good. This hurts all dems, not just Obama.
by okamichan13 2007-04-12 07:24AM | 0 recs
You really need to know the
context in which he made the appearance (I am sure Obama remembers his "freeze out" of Fox, and so there must be pretty good explanation here), before jumping to conclusions and posting a "come look at this BAD THING OBAMA DID" type of diary. The diary as posted doesn't display objectivity and consideration on your part, unfortunately, IMO.
Obama can't win a general election
running as a nice guy whose sole message is "i was against the war from the beginning"
by TarHeel 2007-04-12 07:43AM | 0 recs
That's a gross underrepresentation of Obama's
platform and candidacy. And you know it.
I have no doubt they'll run a hard hitting GE campaign, if he wins the nomination.
I for one would be able to campaign for him vis-a-vis John Edwards, since we don't have to lie, apologize away inconsistencies and 180 degree turn about on the war, come Fall of 2008.
Re: Obama can't win a general election
He can if he's running against a dillusional old man who thinks Iraq is great.  Probably also if they talk about how Romney flip flopped on major social issues, or Giulliani flip flopping on his first marriage.
No Republican candidate can really shake the base, at all.
Something Obama does is brings new people to the table.  It would be incidently hard to turn him down.  He's getting people who've never voted before to vote, while turning a lot more moderates than Edwards or Clinton probably could from what we've seen so far.
by JeremiahTheMessiah 2007-04-12 07:49AM | 0 recs
Re: You really need to know the
Yes indeed, we really need to know the context, instead of (once again, as usual) we are left to guess what the heck Obama really is doing.
We jump to conclusions because we are often left scratching our heads, wondering.
I don't "get" this new politics of his.  If this is an olive branch, fine.  Let us know.  If this is a one-time deal for specific reasons, great, issue a freaking press release explaining that.  If he is going to deal with Hume but no one else, or is this is a general amnesty, or something in between, give us a clue.
If, if, if....
There is no way we should be left without any reason for this to counter attacks this will invite.  And not from Edwards or Hillary supporters, but from wingnuts who just love to tar and feather Dems with the waffle, flip-flop, wichy-washy crap, every single day.
NL.  I fire in the face of wingers where possible all the time.  It's my fondest hobby.  Obama is leaving me with nothing to defend these charges.  I can't seriously sit back while they laugh at me, as a liberal, and only can say "don't jump to conclusions."  They just laugh more and pile on.
It's embarassing.
Obama makes us all look bad by doing this WITHOUT a decent explaination.
It's all well and good to say "there must be a good explanation."  Well I certainly hope so!
Let's have it.  What on earth is this campaign thinking?
He took $10,000 from a swiftie
He took $10,000 from a big GOP donor who helped fund the Swift Boaters and who also contributed to Barack's friend, Joe Lieberman in '06.
I'm sure can forgive Obama - maybe he needed the $
From the New York Times (March 7, 2007):
" In May 2005, Mr. Abbruzzese, who was vice chairman of Tejas and a principal investor in Skyterra, contributed $10,000 along with his wife to Mr. Obama's political action committee -- a departure from his almost exclusive support of Republicans. Eight months earlier, for instance, he had contributed $5,000 to the Swift Boat group, and he has given $100,000 to the Republican National Committee since 2004."
by dpANDREWS 2007-04-12 07:25AM | 0 recs
Here was Obama's response:
ABC News
Speaking of conflicts, what's with the fact that one of the principal investors in Skyterra -- and a $10,000 contributor to Obama's political action committee -- is Jared Abbruzzese, a major GOP donor, contributor to the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth," and a central figure in a federal investigation?
Obama said Abbruzzese's $10,000 contribution apparently came because of John Gorman, who is a big supporter of Obama down in Austin, Texas. "Apparently," Obama said, "that individual had, was a fellow investor with Gorman in something, in some project, and Gorman solicited him. I've never met him, I don't know him, have no knowledge of his background either as a Republican or any of the other things that he had funded."
ps: your link is broken. Not sure if it will allow access even after it's fixed (because it is NY select). So, I don't know if the link includes Obama's response. Could you please post the ABC News link with Obama's response, next time you critique Obama on this; TIA.
It get's by the select wall for archives too.
I got it from the NYTimes Link Generator.  I always use this since NYTimes articles disappear behind the wall after a couple of weeks, but these alternate RSS links don't.
But save the "he didn't know" excuse
When this came to light a few weeks back, many Obama supporters simply excused Barack by saying he probably didn't know the guy, he can't know all this donors, etc.
You don't get 10 grand from someone unsolicited over the internet.  Bigtime contributors don't hand over that kind of money without at least some type of interaction with the candidate.
Re: Breaking - Obama Fox freezout over?
Whether or not Obama upsets current donors by his move, he could reach out to more donors with this.  I don't see it as a sissy or soft move.  Especially since his campaign responds to criticism almost on the spot.  He ignored Fox news for what, 2 months or so?  I think they've learned their lesson not to try and screw Obama with false claims.
The diarist is doing a hit job on Obama. This is a press gaggle and not an interview. If it is an interview we should see a transcript of it with Brit Hume asking questions and Obama ANSWEREING.
as an Edwards first Obama second supporter
I don't think going on FoxNews per se is bad.
having the democrats primary debate MEDIATED by Fox is INSANE.
but I don't think going on foxnews in itself is bad.
however, it would be good if Democrats made sure on fox the playing field was level.
e.g. michael moore did o'reilly but had a contract that the whole interview had to be shown unedited.
the only reason this matters is for the next fox mediated debate that gets shot down let's not hear that obama froze out fox.
I do not think going on fox itself is necessarily a bad thing.
Although it's odd to boycott Imus one day (who supported Harold Ford) and go on Fox the next.
