Urban legend? Child sells toy for Obama

Has anyone heard this story?  It sounds like the kind of urban legend that gets sent around in a mass email.  Someone from San Francisco called in to the Ed Shultz show today and reported it as having happened to a friend of his.  I don't have all the words memorized, but here is the gist of it:

This "friend" was bringing a "disadvantaged" young boy to the polls with him on Super Tuesday for a "teaching moment".  As the man was standing there deciding who to vote for, the child pulled $17.80 out of his pocket.  Even though his family only had a TV on a card table, he had seen Obama speak and sold his best toy to get money to donate to the Obama campaign. Of course the man decided then and there to vote for Obama, and supposedly so did this caller after he heard the story.

Ed pretty much went right to commercial, but didn't challenge this guy on what is quite obvious to me a fake story. I've looked it up Snopes and other urban legend sites, but have not found it.  Let me know if you have seen it, or heard it in other forms, and I will submit it to Snopes myself.

Am I just too cynical to believe in the Oba-magic?

Probably impossible to know

Unless eye witnesses come forward, we'll never know.  Obama has ad a similar effect on a lot of other people, however, including one twelve year old who actually became a precinct captain in his community (and received a fair amount of media attention for it).  The simple fact is that he's motivating a LOT of people in ways that no Democratic candidate has in a generation.

Re: Probably impossible to know

I do believe that, and I find that I'm not too cynical to be moved by the genuine reactions.  This story just seemed a little too rehearsed, and in the style of the fake feel-good emails that get sent to me by my friends with a death wish.

Re: Probably impossible to know

I volunteered in Charleston, SC, and at one of our earliest volunteer conventions, a 12 year-old kid had his mom drive him about 100 miles to Charleston, early on a Saturday morning, so he could attend the convention and learn more about helping elect Obama.

There was also a 90-year-old woman there to add some balance.

My 2 year-old can pick out Barack Obama when he comes on TV.  He points to the TV and says "brockobama".  We've never told him anything about Barack Obama.  He must just be picking up on the good vibes from my wife and I.

Re: Urban legend? Child sells toy for Obama

I live near a junior high school in Washington, DC.  The other day as I was walking by the school during recess a kid saw my Obama sticker on my coat and asked me for another one.  I happened to have about 5 stickers in my coat pocket left over from an event.  I gave the kid one then several friends of his ran over, then more.  I could have given out 100 stickers!  The kids were really excited.
