HuffingtonPost makes fun of -Eight Belles, Kentucky Derby Horse, Dies

I HAD to do it. I had to write another quick dairy. I'm deeply saddend by this.

Maybe it's being caught up in the moment ....but some may remember how Hillary asked everyone to support the only Filly in the race today at the Kentucky derby. She chooses the ONLY filly in the race in spite of being a 20-1 odd over the favorite Big Brown. That horse today ran the race of her life, beat every odds and came in 2nd! Ala Rocky ! But the horse broke her ankle and died (put to death) after crossing the finish line.

What does huffington post do? They paste her death on their main page as an article to rile the pro Obama website/ supporters as a point to ridicule Hillary.

Is this what democrats or so called progressive sites are stooping to now? Can you stand by and claim to be a proud democrat today?... relating/ mocking the death of an animal to push your candidate of choice?

Update [2008-5-3 22:33:57 by myddfan]: added dailyKos to the title AKA to the list of progressive sites mocking the death of an animal to push their candidate of choice.
Update [2008-5-3 23:16:14 by myddfan]:JUST NOTICED - I just saw them updating it w/ a video on the HP site now. They are morphing the story now perhaps because the comments now coming in are painting "huffopost" in bad light for the way they projected the story an hour ago.
Update [2008-5-4 1:11:14 by myddfan]: Went to dailykos. Seems like they have most all daries now gone making fun of the horses death. I'm removing them from my title. Thanks to mydd members, it seems we showed them how to be a bit classy today. Huffington post on the other hand Crass...
If you really want to take an euphemism from this as awful tragedy Huffingtonpost? it is not to celebrate the death of an animal? But celebrate a 20-1 odd horse that ran the race of her life. 8 belles was not the no1 pick.  This is truley a classic American tale playing over again. Yeah you may have not won the war but who won the hearts and minds?
GO GO Eight Belles, you won ours!

I dont even bother with HP anymore. They have  totally turned into a cheap gossip mag, on the side aisles at the paying counter of Wal-mart.

Me either, generally

I will go if one of the blogs on my blogroll has a link, because not everything pro-Hillary is censured. The Mayhill Fowler article is a case in point.

Re: Me either, generally

or negative for Obama, as the Mayhill Fowler article was. I didn't mean to imply it was pro-Hillary, as it obviously wasn't. Fowler is still an Obama supporter as far as I know.

Re: Huffington Post makes fun of -Eight Belles, Ke

You should be ashamed.

Daily Kos members have been troll-rating the living crap out of the few morons who thought the horse's death was funny. The handful of diaries on the subject are utterly filled with angry comments demanding the diarists get some common sense and delete their diaries.

But hey, who gives a damn about facts or being truthful when you can make yet another lame-ass political attack on Daily Kos.

Re: Huffington Post makes fun of -Eight Belles, Ke

What "editorial staff"? If you see one of the front-pagers posting it on the main page, THEN you can attack dKos. But you're issue is that someone wrote a diary about it? Any-freaking-one can write a diary.

Stop complaining that whatever dKos admins there actually are don't go around deleting every diary that people complain about. It would produce just as many problems there as it does at MyDD.

We do the best we can to keep people in line there, but part of the freedom of political discourse on a blog is also the freedom to post a silly diary about it.

Your post is false and defamatory.  You provided no link because there's none to provide.

On a night of another great Democratic victory, you should apologize for cheapening by slandering fellow Democrats.

Re: Oh man, it's been all over kos

But have you read the comments? About 95% of the comments are CONDEMNING the diaries and the other comments that are making light of this tragedy. That's right, Kossacks are calling out other Kossacks BIG TIME! Lots of posts saying stuff like, "We don't need your type here, go somewhere else."

So not such a broad brush, ok?

Re: Oh man, it's been all over kos

Agreed... and I just checked out Huffpo... they have an article about the filly, but so does every major news outlet...

I saw no mocking there... unless reporting it is now considered mocking somehow...

by JenKinFLA 2008-05-03 07:21PM | 0 recs
Agreed about the HuffPost article

I strongly support Hillary, but saw no mockery in the article. Mentioning that Hillary was backing Eight Belles is not mocking per se.

Some of the comments, on the other hand, were disgusting. They used the excuse of "the irony of it" to cloak their lack of class and taste, as did several commenters on the 4 diaries I saw at dKos.

Yeah, I went to the Big Orange (first time in months) because I bet my DH a nickel that there would be at least one such diary there on the subject.

The gist of all the comments: How IRONIC that a female horse backed by Hillary came in second to Obama's pick AND THEN DIED! Could it be an OMEN???

But they didn't even have their facts straight. At the risk of raining on their little irony parade, Obama did NOT pick Big Brown to win. For what it's worth, for the sake of accuracy, Obama picked Captain John to win. Captain John didn't even finish in the money; he came in 6th. So much for irony and omens.

As others have noted, I was relieved to see so many Obama supporters excoriating those diaries and those comments for the trash that they were. That was a good thing.

I haven't read the comments, but I wouldn't be surprised by what you are saying. I didn't think the progressive world would allow themselves to act in such a demeaning manner. Good for them.

Re: Oh man, it's been all over kos

Yes, well here's what I'm "begging" YOU to do...how about actually reading the comments in those diaries at Daily Kos?

We can't stop people from posting diaries, but we can let them know how we feel about it, and people at dKos certainly have. Diarists' tip-jars are being HRd into oblivion and people are pissed off that someone would joke about a horse's sad death on a political site.

Did you bother to READ any of the comments? Or did you just do a typical drive-by glancing of the main page so you could come back here and breathlessly attack dKos?

Diaries aren't deleted at Daily Kos

by a staff of controlling overlords, as happens elsewhere.

by Bee 2008-05-03 08:26PM | 0 recs
Re: Oh man, it's been all over kos

I love how people who don't understand how dKos works always assume they do and attack the site accordingly.

Daily Kos doesn't delete pro-Hillary diaries. In fact, I do not recall a diary on any subject ever being deleted there. And as I said upthread, that's even including all the drive-by troll hit-jobs.

Kos himself barely does anything on the site other than write a few posts a day. It's all decentralized. Content is handled by the FPers and editors. The tech side is handled by ct and a couple others. Despite what people here think, it's not some Kos Monarchy, where he rules every facet of the site with an iron fist. And it's certainly not like AOL, where permanent moderators float around policing content.

If you want to talk out of your ass about a site where you obviously haven't spent much time, that's your right. But at some point you might want to stop digging that hole and just delete any reference to dKos from your diary.

If poster is right about Huffington Post's intention to mock Hillary's run in some way . . . the only thing they'll accomplish is to offend and motivate supporters and those who will see this for what it is.

Horse racing is inhumane

What is sad is that you people aren't outraged by the "sport of kings" to begin with. Forcing horses to run at top speed with a human attached to its back is inhumane.

And how silly you clintonites sound every time you denounce a journalist or a network, or anyone who doesn't support hillary. It really takes away any credibility you might have had.

This is classless and trashy, all that I would expect from Arianna and her minions. As someone who loves animals, this angers me regardless of what candidate they're talking about. It is completley trashy. What happened today at the track was so sad, and it's even sadder than Arianna and her bag of trashy writers have to exploit it for political laughs.

The HORSE is not the issue...

...the death of the HORSE is utterly sad. The fact that you choose to make the dead HORSE about Hillary Clinton is so much deeper and darker then sad. I went and looked at Huffington and the twisting it takes to make the placement of the story about the poor animal somehow about Hillary Clinton is truly... wow.

Open the link and read the story

You'll find references to the political story embedded in the Kentucky Derby story.

The cheers for the winner's decisive victory were cut short when Eight Belles, the runner-up, was euthanized on the track minutes after the race when she collapsed with two broken front ankles.

Hillary Clinton last week put her money on Eight Belles to win the race:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/03 /kentucky-derby-horse-eigh_n_99987.html

A courageous horse
Is it really worth your humanity to win an election? What's the point of winning when you stoop to the lowest end and become one with those who have occupied the White House for 8 years?
Well, there would be no point at all, but in this case you can be certain that Senator Obama would never join in this type of behavior. There isn't any way that he would take any joy in the anguish of another. I am a strong Hillary supporter and I am certain of this. I am also certain that he would only feel shame for those who would participate in such an orgy of delight over the death of a courageous animal.

Don't see anything on KOS front page or rec list.

Saw a couple diaries get trashed in comments on the subject, most were deleted pretty quickly.

It's amusing, in a sad kind of way, to see a diary lamenting using this tragedy politically, well, using this tragedy politically.

I cannot believe that they did that. I love

horses and i like the Derby (was born in Kentucky actually), but seeing a horse getting fatally hurt like that after running a great race breaks my heart.

What is happening to us people? Do we find that funny? How can we get satisfaction out of that? Have we become monsters?

I can no longer recognize and see myself in the crazy crowd that support Obama these days. I honestly think they lost their minds and lost any sense of measurement and constrain. They actually started to scare me.

However, just went to HuffPo

Evil

Laughing at an animal's death is reserved for maladjusted men who were awkward maladjusted boys in adolescence.

Obama appeals to this population segment because he gives these antisocial men a common enemy in Hillary Clinton.  Together they band to villify Hillary, who represents the adult version of the women who would never date them when they were younger.

Don't blame the messenger.  Even Obama knows it's okay to give broad sociology lessons on people you don't like.

Re: Evil

It shows just how deep their hatred of women goes that they can make repulsive "jokes" about this. I hope none of them have girlfriends or wives because a man like that is clearly abusive, at "minimum" verbally abusive.

Re: HuffingtonPost /DailyKOS makes fun of -Eight B

I saw the Huffington Post blog and was completely sickened- I did notice a number of female Obama backers calling the blog and the Obamacans comments tasteless and disgusting- I noted with little surprise, that almost all the ones saying disgusting things were male Obama backers, a couple of female Obamacans chimed in, but not many, most of the female Obama backers were 1)disgusted that this tragedy was even made a blog, and 2)disgusted at their male counterparts making repulsive jokes out of a tragedy.

Hillary only said to bet on the filly because she heard from KY backers that's what women here love to do when a filly runs- thousands of us go for the filly, because it's really fun if the filly wins. (38  have run in the 134 years, 3 have won- 2 in my lifetime, and many of the others came in second or third- so we aren't talking about impossible odds. Eight Belles, unlike the other fillies that ran in the past though, had never run against colts- that's why her odd were higher that usual for a filly: 12-1 at the time of the race, the other fillies that have run in my lifetime were more like 6-1 or something like that.

I also thought it was kind of stupid and racist for those jerky Obamacans to be comparing Big Brown to Obama. (It invokes some ugly racial stereotypes about African American men.) Big Brown was named in honor of UPS (they have those big brown delivery vehicles). Also they were invoking the nickname of Secretariat- "Big Red" as a kind of good luck charm.

I am an Kentuckian and we are saddened and shocked by the Eight Belles tragedy. I was disgusted by the network hosts barely mentioning the tragedy and being all bubbly about the win. I had to turn away to another channel until the local coverage came on.

The local newscasters were much more subdued. Big Brown does look to maybe be another Secretariat and we may finally get a triple crown winner after 30 years, that's good. But what happened to Eight Belles makes us all sad.

Two years ago when Barbaro was injured in a similar fashion- but less severely, people around here were rooting for his recovery. Sadly he never fully recovered and had to be put to sleep, after a second leg developed an infection. People here still remember Barbaro.

Just yesterday a horse in another race here was hurt the same way Barbaro was. It's still alive and they are trying to help it recover at an equine hospital. Chances are low for full recovery for a horse with a leg injury, but it can happen if it's just one leg. Eight Belles broke both her front ankles, so there was no chance for her. (they have to be able to stand to recover)

On Huffington Post and from a few loser Obamacan trolls here. Some of your fellow Obama backers are even telling you that.

When Obama backers condemn the Obamacan trolls in Hillary blogs it reflects better on your candidate- call out the losers and it makes them look less representative of the candidate. Remember when you comment in a Hillary blog and you are an Obama backer, you are a representative of your candidate.

As an animal lover

what really disturbs me is that this animal died because humans decided to use her in a sport that placed her life in danger for their enjoyment.  Whatever rude comments were made about it after the fact were certainly uncalled for, but the true crime is the fact that her life was used up for human diversion.  It makes me sick.

Re: I'm an Obama supporter

If more Obama backers that post online were like you then things would be a lot better. Instead the ones we see all the time are the ones that come in and write nasty troll comments in our posts. They have no clue that every time they do that, they make Hillary backers that much less likely to want to vote for Obama should he win the nomination. And I'm not talking about the minority of conservative Democrats (who are iffy on either Hillary or Obama), but the ranks of the majority of moderate and liberal lifelong Democrats who make up most of Hillary's backers. You lose votes when you insult and harass people like that. It's stunning that they don't get it that they are causing their candidate to lose votes. Harassing with constant insults on both the candidate and the blogger is an easy way to lose an election for your candidate.

I don't go to Obama bloggers posts, I'm not interested. Hillary is the best candidate on the issues that matter the most to me. Idiots coming in to Hillary blogs and trashing my candidate and the blogger with lying misogynist comments is just going to harden my resolve to never vote for Obama because that is the type Obama backer that is everywhere being loudmouthed creeps- not just in the blogosphere either- TV, radio, print media, even Obama campaign people.

It'd be a very different atmosphere if the Obama  campaign had been run like Jesse Jackson's 1988 campaign. Obama should have encouraged his campaign to be like Jesse's. If it had and the votes were the same as they are now, no one would be attacking, we'd all be engaged and happy to let it go to the last primary, happy to back either candidate that ultimately won the nomination. I know, because that's how it was in 1988. I voted for Jesse in the primary but I was okay about it when Dukakis was the nominee. Dukakis didn't have his campaign harassing Jesse to get out, even though he was almost 800 delegates behind at the end- he won 11 states, and made a great speech at the convention. The DNC was lame and didn't give him any support during his run, but they didn't harass him to drop out like they have Hillary, despite her being far closer and neither candidate having enough delegates to win the nomination (and her being significantly ahead in the Electoral count- and a bit ahead on both superdelegates and popular votes.

Class?

"Thanks to mydd members, it seems we showed them how to be a bit classy today."

Giggles and points at black pot.

(and that was general snark, not to the author specifically)

Actually that completely pisses me off

The diarist posted something about dKOS with zero first-hand knowledge and then even when posting a retraction for his misinformation, has to add something shitty to it.

The classy thing to do would have been to simply retract the statement.

Re: HuffingtonPost makes fun of -Eight Belles, Ken

Just to summarize:  We're trying to get riled up about the following:  We support candidate A.  A bet on horse B, which got killed.  Commenter C, on webside D, mocked B.  D generally supports candidate E.  E opposes A.  Therefore we should hate E and/or love A more.

Silly season, anyone?

HR?

You all may not agree with the sentiment, or the taste, but this comment isn't HR worthy.  Uprated.
