Terrorist Attacks During the Clinton Years!

So she wants to take credit for her husband's administration.  She wants to take credit for any foreign policy achievements during the Clinton years, she wants to claim the national security mantle, and she claims to be fully vetted.  She claims there are no more SURPRISES in her and her husband's background.  That remains to be seen!!

But who says all the other baggage we know about can't be effectively re-used, re-hashed and re-manipulated for political advantage?

I can just see the Rethugs coming out with a commercial (visuals and all) outlining a string of terrorist bombings that effected U.S. interests, property and persons during Bill Clinton's administration.  Shall we list a few here:

1993 - The first World Trade Center bombing
1995 - Attempted crashing of plane on White House
1995 - Oklahoma City bombing
1996 - Khobar Towers bombing - Saudi Arabia
1998 - U.S. Embassy bombings Kenya/Tanzania
2000 - USS Cole Bombing - Yemen

With Hillary as the nominee...it's going to be UGLY!

Re: Terrorist Attacks During the Clinton Years!

It's fortunate for Barack Obama that he understands politics much better than his supporters do.

I think the Obama supporters

and the Clinton supporters
know how to recognize this crap when they see it.

It helps us see how out of touch with reality the GOP is that they would go on endlessly about this CRAP instead of debate on the issues.

The reason they avoid issues is.. its been obvious for a long time that they really don't have a clue on any of them.

Money may buy a lot, it may even buy bloggers but it wont buy back the last seven years.

I think this is crap

I'm an Obama supporter but this is ridiculous.

Bill Clinton was a very strong (not perfect) President when it came to fighting terrorism.  Whether it was coordinating agencies, recognizing the threat of Al Qaeda long before most, tripling funds, etc... Clinton's record is excellent in this area.

As for the latter 3 on the list, it was republicans who opposed going after Al Qaeda, whining all the time, "No War For Monica."

As for the commenter above, don't paint too broad a brush.

This Just In! Clinton Responsible For The Gout!
I just love the "Blame Clinton" crowd. If you let them tell it, Clinton's responsible for the Black Plague; Clinton's responsible for turning Michael Jackson white; Clinton sent that girl to Kobe Bryant's room; and Clinton encouraged Britney Spears to shave her head. While we're here, is there anything else y'all want to blame Clinton for?

Re: Terrorist Attacks During the Clinton Years!

A review of the State Department assessments of American deaths from terrorism will reveal a falling death rate through out the 90s while Clinton was president. In fact, the majority of deaths from terrorism were at the hands of right wing American terrorists, rather than foreign terrorists.

Here are the list of terrorist actions against Americans and the resulting death rate. Which president would you like to compare this to?

Two Americans killed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mir_Aimal_K ansi

Six Americans killed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade _Center_bombing

19 Americans die here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khobar_Towe rs_bombing

12 Americans killed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_U.S._e mbassy_bombings

17 Americans killed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cole_bo mbing

A grand total of 56 Americans died from foreign terrorism in the 90s. 56 - that's both military and civilian.

And now for rightwing terrorism against Americans:

168 Americans killed by here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_Ci ty_bombing

1 American dies at Olympic park: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_ Olympic_Park_bombing

Dr. David Gunn killed by rightwing terrorists: http://www.prochoice.org/about_abortion/ violence/murders.asp

Dr. John Britton and James Barrett killed by rightwing terrorists. http://www.prochoice.org/about_abortion/ violence/
murders.asp

Shannon Lowney and Leanne Nichols killed by rightwing terrorists: http://www.prochoice.org/about_abortion/ violence/murders.asp

Officer Robert Sanderson killed by rightwing terrorists: http://www.prochoice.org/about_abortion/ violence/murders.asp

Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wheel

in the years before 9/11.  That is the most devastating attack that McCain will unleash which will undo Hillary.  Obama may figure out a way to use it as well.

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton

The falling terrorism rate rebuts that argument. Over 13 attacks were stopped during the Clinton presidency and numerous terrorists went to prison for a long, long time.

I'd love to see Obama use that argument. In fact, I'd encourage it eagerly. Give Hillary a chance to recount during a debate all of their anti-terrorism successes and that's something that will rebound to her favor.

So go ahead - use that argument. It'll give me a chance to post the falling terrorism numbers every time you do. I'll go get my list of prevented terrorist actions and convictions as well - there's not another president who can begin to match Bill Clinton in effectiveness on this issue. And leave the OFB sucking up Limbaugh's sweaty action.

LOL, you really think that's gonna be

effective against John McCain?  9/11 happened 7 months after the Clintons left office and you're citing numbers that ignore that the biggest attack of American soil was being planned and organized right under the Clinton's noses.

Re: LOL, you really think that's gonna be

Yeah, i think she'll mop the floor with McCain on the subject.

About 435 Americans died from Islamic terrorism during Reagan/Bush and thousands of Americans  have died from Islamic terrrorism during Bush II. In the Clinton administration, fewer than 60 died. Fewer than 60 as compared to 435.

That's a record to run on and be proud of.

As for planned terrorist attacks, unlike Bush, the Clinton administration stopped two massive attacks on NYC that would have easily killed as many people as 9/11 - the planned bombing of the Lincoln and Holland Tunnel during rush hour. Those terrorists are in prison for a long, long time and no one died.

As for 9/11, it's Bush that ignored the blinking lights - not Clinton. It's the Bush admin who moved terrorism as a DOJ priority from #1 during the Clinton years down to #5 under Ashcroft. It's the Bush administration that didn't take the advice of the successful departing clinton administration. it's the Bush admin that didn't hold a single cabinet level meeting on terrorism until the week of 9/11 - none of which can be said about the Clinton administration.

They got in office, the first WTC attack happened. They prosecuted successfully and used information gained from those interrogations to prevent the next of wave of attacks. And we haven't even discussed the prevention of the millenial eve attack - another one Clinton pulled off.

so go right ahead - bring terrorism up. No other president - indeed, world leader - has a record of effectiveness quite like the clintons' do and I think they'd appreciate the chance to brag a little bit.

You're smoking crack

if you think you're citing a powerful statistic.  An attack that was planned, funded, and organized during your watch doesn't suddenly not become your fault simply because it was then actually executed a few months after you left office.  But, by all means, keep your head in the sand.

by bigdcdem 2008-03-06 01:25PM | 0 recs
Re: You're smoking crack

Seven months is not a few months. And because Clinton effectively stopped several other attacks that would have been as large, and since bush ignored the protocol developed during the Clinton administration - he couldn't do what Clinton did.

It's the obama supporters who are smoking crack if they think they can split Dems off from Clintons on the subject terrorism. The Clinton record is superb. 9/11 is Bush's shortcoming - not Bill's.

Funny how eager Obama supporters are to jump onboard with GOP criticisms of the only Democratic president to be re-elected in fifty years.

Superb on 9/11

That is the most delusional comment of the day.  By all means, run on the Clinton record of stopping Al-Qaeda.

Re: Superb on 9/11

Bill's record of stopping AQ is one to be proud of. Just because you haven't bothered to read up on his successes, doesn't mean there weren't any. It's always sad to me just how uninformed most Obama supporters are about the 90s. It's like you guys all sat around gobbling up right wing talking points, and didn't actually learn any history.

by Little Otter 2008-03-08 05:28PM | 0 recs
Bill's record of stopping AQ is one to be proud?

Ask 3000+ families of the 9/11 victims about how successful he and Zellary were at stopping Al-Qaeda.

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wh

Believe me, I cannot wait to return to the 90s with John McCain.

Oh my god

this is crap.

So, are you endorsing bush because only 9/11 happened?

History is a funny thing when you read it in context.

Re: Terrorist Attacks During the Clinton Years!

The Clintons forced the Bush administration to ignore the report that said "Bin Laden plans to attack US by using airplanes".  Man, those Clintons are some powerful folks!
