Try taking that quote as a humorous way of making a simple point. Instead of taking it so seriously and debating it with "absolute clauses" and "restrictive clauses," just understand this. The 2nd Amendment is totally anachronistic and has no meaning in today's world.  I know that's a little strong, but think about it. Think about what "militia" referred to in 1790 and tell me how you get from that to some guy carrying a concealed weapon in 2011 Baltimore.

Laws which affect the law-abiding are all we've got. No one disputes that criminals won't obey the laws.  What we dispute is that laws aimed at the law-abiding will have no effect on the criminals.  They will for the simple reason that all the guns start out legally owned and somehow slip into the criminal world.  Proper gun control laws could have a major effect on that gun flow.

  • "So people with legal gun ownership permits/carry permits are the source of all the gun violence in the city?" Why do you have to exaggerate what I say? That's not fair or honest.  I don't say ALL gun violence is committed by lawful gun owners. I say SOME is.

"But you need to ascribe the proper ownership of that criminal act to the person performing it, rather than infer that those who follow the law and own and use their firearms legally in accordance with the law and the Constitution are somehow the blame."  What I say is a criminal is responsible for what he does, in most cases anyway.  But lawful gun owners who fight to keep gun laws as lax as they are, which enhances the gun violence problem, must accept their share of responsibility for that enhanced gun violence. You can't have it both ways.  If you want criminals to be responsible for their actions then law abiding folks have to be responsible for their actions too.
