News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

Obama has just released all his tax returns form 2000 to the present. I'm sure much will be written about these, but here are a few short highlights.

1040 Income:

2006 -  $983, 826
2005 - $1,655,106
2004 -   $207,647
2003 -   $238,327
2002 -   $259,394
2001 -   $272,759
2000 -   $240,505

The big jumps in 2005 and 2006 are due to business income, presumably from his books.

2006 -   $506,618
2005 - $1,141,495

yeah I heard

the whole 2008 April 15th date.

Why the hell do she need to wait till 15th to realy tax returns from previous years?

Re: yeah I heard

I don't know. I completely agree with you on this one.

As Rev. Wright once said....

Barack Obama is a poor black man.

Wish I were such a poor black man. I would imagine 98% of other white people do, too.

I'm happy for his success but give us a break on the rhetoric.

Re: Why say this petty garbage?

Straw-man argument.

When has Obama ever been called a poor black man?

Wright said Obama is not a rich white man.  If you think $200,000 a year on a joint return from two Harvard educated attorneys is rich, you should see the Tax Returns of Buffet and Gates.

Perhaps you mistook the stereotypes in your head for someone calling Obama poor.

Re: Why say this petty garbage?

This is Barack's return.  Not a joint return.  And they chose the jobs in the field of their choice.  Their incomes are roughly what they knew they would be.  Let's not get it twisted.

Re: Why say this petty garbage?

Try clicking the link in the diary above.

These are in fact Joint Tax Returns.

The person doing the twisting was the original commenter in this thread suggesting that Wright had lied and that Obama is some kind of a hypocrite.

I don't care how much he makes

Just don't tell me he is poor.

And while 250 k is rich enough, his income has increased substantially over that amount.  And there is no identification of whether this is adjusted gross income or taxable income.  If it is taxable income, that means actual income is significantly higher.

Re: I don't care how much he makes

He recieved an advance of $1.5 million for "The Audacity of Hope" spread over two years.

Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

I would like to see both candidates' returns.  It's important that this be dealt with before the General.

btw,

I would like an apology for you calling me Karl Rove about the whole sniper bit before.

by kindthoughts 2008-03-25 12:25PM | 0 recs
Re: btw,

I'm not sure I called you Karl Rove. If I did, I'm sorry. What I did say several times is that this sniper bit takes a page out of the Karl Rove, 527 swift boat attack campaign tactics.

Take a fairly innocuous incident that undermines a key strength of your opponent and blow it all out of proportion. Get your supporters to make over the top claims and use a lot of sarcasm and ridicule. It's a character assassination tactic and it is ugly. That's what I said, and I still think that is the case.

One thing...

This helps explain where he got the money to pay for his $1.6M mansion in 2005.

wow

that was so classless.

by kindthoughts 2008-03-25 10:59AM | 0 recs
yeah

I am sure in your church you got a quiet little pastor who does not speak about controversial issues, who does not stand up to inequalities and outrages.

by kindthoughts 2008-03-25 11:14AM | 0 recs
Re: yeah

I have a priest who regularly speaks out on issues.  Yet he has been warned by the congregation on exactly how far he can and in what direction he can go.

Why, you ask?  Because people have a choice, of what they will or will not listen to.  What they will or won't stand for.  What they can and can not endorse by their affiliation.  Regardless of the fact that he's baptised my 4 children and married both me, my sister, my parents and uncle.  If he EVER said anything like Wright's comments I would walk out of the church at that moment, tell him I'm leaving the Parish unless he leaves, contact the Bishop, and Cardinal of the Parish and tell them the same, and go so far as to reach out directly to Rome if necessary.  If they refused to do anything about, then I would contact the media.

That's what a responsible person does.  Someone who is responsible for their actions and truly realizes that those comments are not 'just words'.  They are hate.

have you ever listened to

Wrights entire sermon. Please do. Seriously

by kindthoughts 2008-03-25 11:31AM | 0 recs
Do you expect me to believe that!

I thought everyone's pastor did a little hip gyration while talking about riding dirty on the people like they were Monica Lewinsky.

by lombard 2008-03-25 12:32PM | 0 recs
Don't assume anything

My parents made me sit through mass, year after year.  Yes, I was listening to those priests talk.  I heard a lot of sexist things.  I was a kid so I wasn't permitted to walk out although I argued with my parents a lot about it.  By the time I turned 15, I laid down the law and never went again except to a few marriages and funerals, and then only out of respect for the friends and family members.

Hell, if a 15-year-old can do it, surely an adult like Obama could have done it.

As an adult, I would NEVER sit through a sermon about sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. (Even those funerals and weddings didn't have homilies about how women are inferior or how gays are sinners, since the time was taken up in eulogies or wedding vows instead.) I never have.  And if by some chance I'm ever in a house of worship and hear bigotry from the pulpit again, I'll walk out then and there - unlike Barack, who apparently lacks the courage of his convictions, OR who believes in what he heard but is unwilling to take responsibility for it.

Re: Don't assume anything

so you are saying that your parents were sexist for not walking out and leaving with you?

I guess i dont understand you are showing that Hey I stopped going

but what are you saying about all those including your parents who DIDN'T stop?

by TruthMatters 2008-03-25 11:39AM | 0 recs
Re: Don't assume anything

Actually, by that time, my parents weren't going to church themselves but figured they would "do the right thing" by continuing to force their children to go.

What I am saying, however, is that yes, my parents had some residual sexism (they were better than most people of the time).  Two brothers (both older than me) soaked it up enough that they still have problems with women in power.  Many, many people in churches soak up that sexism (and other -isms) and yes, there is plenty of sexism still to go around in our country, as well as plenty of racism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc.

The difference between all those people and Obama, however, should be extreeeeeeeeemely obvious. Neither my parents nor those other people are running for president. There's a different standard when you want to be president.

Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

My guess is that he was happy with his success and gave a big donation to his church. This does not seem like something awful. I know the Wright matter has people up in arms, but giving money to your church is not in itself a bad thing, when you have a big windfall. Tread carefully here.

Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

I was going to say the same thing.

by venavena 2008-03-25 11:03AM | 0 recs
no it is not

Wright is not a racist or an anti-American. Go watch his full sermon and not just clips.

by kindthoughts 2008-03-25 11:11AM | 0 recs
Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

Have you taken the opportunity to actually watch the entirety of a single one of his sermons?  Or are you basing your conclusion on cherry-picked clips selected by Sean Hannity?

Everyone I've heard that has actually attended services at TUCC states that the CW perception of Wright as expressed in your post, is not the take-away sense they had.

Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

His big bump is also due to Michelle obama getting a huge " suspicious raise of 150k more" Raise after her husband became a US SENATOR

Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

That's just par-for-course: cashing in when you join the establishment.  And Obama is very much an establishment, run-of-the-mill, self-serving politician.

Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

You people are hellbent fired-up piss fast when Obama does something you dislike, but holy mother of God...ask the simple question Hillary herself kept putting to Lazio in 2000--WHERE ARE THE GODDAMNED TAX RETURNS?  HELLO?  HOW HARD IS THIS??--and you respond with a deafening silence.

It's wrong.  Say it's wrong.  Say it.

You, those who are quick to call out your candidate's opponent.  Say it's wrong.

She tries to get the Bosnia fuck-up off the front page by beating a drum about how bad Wright is in statements that are more Rovian than anything McCain or Huckabee has said, and you say nothing.

It's wrong, goddamnit.  Say that.

Which party are you a member of?  Have you people and the people at Kos gone mad?  You have,m haven't you.  You are so wrapped up in whether your horse wins you can't even Reason anymore.

Well, Rove has won then.  Because he has taught you to be like him.

Reality-based community, my ass.  You people can't even call a lie a lie anymore.

Madness.

Thanks Lars

You just summed up my perspective perfectly.  Many here are simply so blinded by rage that they have lost all perspective.

Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

I did say it. You don't have to yell. She should release her tax records. He just released his today. What is gained by using profanity?

by MediaFreeze 2008-03-25 12:57PM | 0 recs
Re: News: Obama Releases Tax Returns

Profanity, sir or madam, is a tool made forever available to us by our founding fathers, and it is a tool that delivers the brunt of a soapbox shout while at the same time employing the most succinct expression of rage in the most economical way possible.  "Fuck" is our birthright, goddammit.
