Why the Military Refuses to Vote for Obama [UPDATE]

This past Saturday, I had dinner with some friends. Considering that these people have a track record of being democratic, and I tend to lean more towards the right, I avoided talking about politics at all costs. However, this did not last very long due to the fact that my friend asked me what my major is, which happens to be Political Communication. Consequently, the question, "So, who are you voting for?" comes up. To my surprise, my liberal friends had told me that they are voting for McCain. There two reasons were as follows:

1. If Hillary were to become President, they were going to move to London.
2. Members of the navy had sworn to them that they would not vote for Obama solely because he will not put his hand on his heart during the national anthem.

My first instinct was to judge-is that really enough reason to not vote for a candidate? According to her and members of the navy, it is. She was invited to a dinner at the Navy Base in San Diego, where she lives. During the dinner she spoke with a few prestigious members about Obama. They told her how they would never hire a Commander in Chief who doesn't put their hand over their heart during the pledge or national anthem, and they feel the same should apply to the president. Beyond any issue they stand for, a president needs to stand by his country first. The members of the navy may not support the war themselves, but they still put their hand over their hearts to support their country and show their patriotism. They feel that there is a loss of understanding between Obama and the war. The war is a an extremely sensitive subject, not just another issue to have a certain position on. Obama should have enough respect for the troops who are putting their lives in danger just based on the fact that they are Americans.

Perhaps Obama is taking too much of a blind eye to the current situation of this country, and as a result he is losing the faith of many potential voters.

"My grandfather taught me when I was 2. During the Pledge of Allegiance, you put your hand over your heart. During the national anthem, you sing." says the Senator himself.

Well, according to the flag code, when the flag is displayed during the national anthem, all members who are not in uniform should have their hand on their heart.

Re: Why the Military Refuses to Vote for Obama [UP

Although your poll of "dinner with some friends"  is pretty compelling, it's worth noting that it's contradicted by the fact that Barack has received more donations from servicemen and women than ANY OTHER CANDIDATE, including Hillary Clinton OR John McCain. Something to think about.

Almost true

That's true if you include only the 'mainstream' candidates. Surprisingly enough though, Ron Paul has the most donations.

It really speaks a lot about what our military thinks when their donations go to anti-war candidates.

Zero actual data, sweeping conclusions - what a winner.

This thing has got to stop.

If I were obama I would do it in one of his rallies to stop this nonsense.  I have been hearing about this and this is wrong.

And I am a Hillary supporter.

All I can say if you don't think the Republicans are not trying to railroad the democratic party with Barack I give up.  Why did he win in VA with all the military. Please think.

so our wealthy, wealthy, overpaid soldiers are also sending him money as part of their fiendishly clever plot? Egads! Evil Genius!

I missed that transmission. What kind of tinfoil do you use? I'd like to upgrade my reception too.

This diary should be deleted by admin.  This is extraordinarily tasteless and trollworthy.

This is vile and hateful and is exactly the type of thing we need to avoid to win in November.

Re: Why the Military Refuses to Vote for

It's too bad your friends are being major dumbassses. Over a freaking gesture? So they would rather have someone send troops in harms way because of foolishness? (lets not kid ourselves, troops in Iraq are not fighting for our freedom even if they think they are, they are victims, not heroes, other than on specific instances where american soldiers have acted in heroic instances unrelated to the main mission in the war where they help out specific Iraquis in harm's way).

Obama is not in the military. Your friends need to stop being so oversensitive.  I thought the military meant being tough and not getting their underwear up in a wad over a trivial non gesture. "Oh my feelings are so hurt." Boo hoo. Man up.

I find it hard to believe they are liberal. So they dont like neither Hillary nor OBama but have respect for McCain? What kind of liberals are they?

Re: Why the Military Refuses to Vote for Obama [UP

You must have missed the story about money donated by active military people.  It has gone primarily to 2 candidates:  Ron Paul and Barack Obama.

We all have our bad days
Pictures of Obama with his hands held low while the national anthem played have circulation on .mil e-mail servers for the past 3 or 4 months.
Yeah, it looks bad, but only a few servicemen have said they wouldn't vote for Obama because of it (and they were the types that wouldn't vote any Democrat under any circumstances).
Most servicemen recognize that Obama meant no disrespect, and was just having a bad day. We all have them. And most wonder why Richardson didn't reach over to inform his friend that he wasn't covering his heart.

Re: Why the Military Refuses

Well...I'm currently serving in the Army, and I support Barack Obama.  And I have even given him some money.  If people are really willing to not vote for someone because they didn't put their hand over their heart then let them.  It's really not that serious.  And to suggest otherwise is both irresponsible and immature.
