No one here is saying this isn't a worthwhile program. It clearly is, but the goal of the stimulus bill is to try and create some jobs and by doing so, increase consumer confidence and get some spending going. The family planning bill, while worthwhile, doesn't belong in here and might give the GOP cover to scuttle the bill.
I agree. Patterson has botched this. I posted about this earlier and was told it was because he promised to wait until the seat was actually vacant and HRC was sworn in. Done. It's time to give us a new senator. There cannot be a shortage of good, qualified candidates who want the job in NY.
She also has a history of serious health problems. She and Stevens have been great justices and have had long careers, particulary Stevens. They can protect their legacies by allowing Obama to appoint worthy successors during his term(s) in office.
This has been tried several times and hasn't work. The only time I can think of that a successful (eventual) nominee skipped Iowa was in 92 with Bill Clinton and that was only because of Harkin's presence and EVERYONE skipped it.
There's no way to tell of course, but I think Clinton COULD have won but she had some disadvantes here. Edwards had made the state his second home for close to 4 year and Obama was from right next door. Richardson threw his non viable support to Obama as well. My own belief at the time was that Edwards win Iowa, but not by a large enough margin to propel him past Clinton and Obama. I then though Clinton would win NH and that would mark the beginning of the end for Obama. How wrong I was!
They are going to fight, probably harder than they would have if they didn't get hammered over the past four years. They have no moderate wing left to speak off. Their base is shrinking. They have to do something to show that they are relevant to what's left of their base.
