Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

I've been unmoved by the tax return issue for a while. I'm sure there will be plenty in Hillary's 2000-2007 returns to work as fodder for Oppo researchers and the like, but here's what I'd really like to hear from some of Clinton's supporters...

(Sincerly, not a bashing, not trying to rally Obama supporters to bash... this is a question about politics...)

Why drag this out? She's given enough promises to release them that she'll have to at some point. Wouldn't sooner be better then later?

They're certainly readily available -- with the kind of money she and Bill now have, plus their public roles, they must have these papers very well organized by lots of well-paid accountants.

Why let this even become an issue? Since it was used against Lazio, sooner or later she had to realize it would come up. And after loaning her campaign money, it's fair game.

Why turn it into a "Obama's not transparent either" issue? It's a poor comparison, because now that his tax returns are out, it just makes the news into her still NOT releasing their returns.

Why pretend it doesn't matter? The FEC requires campaigns release all their data so that voter know where the influence is. If candidates can use their own money, the source of that matters too. As an Obama supporter, I'm more interested in his returns, because of how it could cause me to question my support.

Why not release it last week, esp. Friday, when it would have been lost in the Wright controversy, or easter, or forgotten in the month+ left until PA votes?

Is there any logic other than "hiding something?" I don't want to assume that, but it truly defies campaign logic as I understand it.

Even though Obama made reference to Wright on occasion, his quiet denials were lost in the volume of those video clips. I imagine if he'd been more pro-active, this could have been lessened.

It was supposed to be a rookie mistake on Obama's part -- but really, the Clintons and their staff truly know better.

I just don't understand. Does anyone here who does want to share?

I am sorry but I doubt this is the site for an honest answer of the sort you want.

maybe I will be wrong, but I doubt it

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

Mrs clinton has said that the tax papers will be released on Apr 15th. Why should she listen to BHO campaign to release it any time sooner.

They will get it whenever HRC wants to release it
and that is Apr 15th ( the day I also will be filing :) )

Why cant the campaigns wait.

First they wanted the white house papers released- They got it and what did they find - nothing.

Still waiting for the IL Senate Schedule for BHO?
Any plans to release that.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

indeed like I said, no serious response to the questions you asked, because of posts like this.

also indus are you saying that Hillary hasn't filed her 2000-2006 returns yet and Hillary along with you will be filing your 2000-2006 tax returns on April 15th? (only 1-6 years late, not bad I guess)

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

Correction, they haven't gotten the white house papers released - only her schedule, not her emails and correspondences as first lady.

Also, Obama and his campaign have asked for tax returns since she left the white house 8 years ago, not the 2007 tax returns.  However, it sounds as if that's the only year she plans on releasing.

But you are right, they will get it when Hillary wants to release it.  The question is why wouldn't she release them earlier?

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

And yet Obama has only releases his 2006 and 2007 returns. Why does he want all those returns from her when he has not even provided his own for the same timeframe.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

behind on the news day?

at 11:23 Singer sent a memo blasting Obama for not releasing 2000-2006

at 11:25 Obama's campaign sent out a memo saying the 2000-2006 returns were now on his website.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

No - she said she will release all tax returns since they left the WH.

But it IS disingenuous for Obama to set a timetable for her when he hasn't released all his tax returns as she asked (from when he was in the Illinois Senate), nor his Senate papers.  Why won't he do that?  It's a fair question.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

He has.  The Illinois Senate papers are also public record.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

I think it should be a requirement that at the beginning of a campaign all candidates release their voting and tax records(plus they must continue updating for however long their campaign goes on), that way you know their past from the door.  No more bullshitting for months and then sneaking tidbits into the newscycle when it suits them.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

You make it sound like accounting is some simple little exercise. It isn't. Accountants are forever waiting for documents and rulings. And the more money, the more complex. Probably won't have it done until 4/15.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

once again she wont finish her 2000 tax returns untill April 15th 2008? 8 years?

her 2001 returns till 4/15/08 7 years?
her 2002 returns till 4/15/08 6 years?
her 2003 returns till 4/15/08 5 years?

I know these things can take a while but seriously at this point you need a new accountant!

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

But April 15 is for THIS YEAR. I'm talking about past years, which, by law, have long been done.

Again -- I'm curious about the politics. It seems pretty cut-and-dried to me that this only hurts -- even if it comes out to nothing...

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

Of course, accounting isn't easy, but these people have known they were running for at least a year now, they should've had their previous tax returns ready by now.  The only ones that they should be waiting for should be the filing for 2007.  As soon as they received their W-2 forms those papers should've been filed.

by venavena 2008-03-25 12:08PM | 0 recs
Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

Yep everybody just gets those W-2 in the mail and files that 1040ez form. Do you really think everybody taxes are that easy. Mine aren't mine take weeks of work by me just to get everything my accountant needs to start them. Then weeks of calls back and for more info needed, clarifications needed. Yes taxes are simple if you work for a paycheck and get a W-2, if you have investments and own your own business or run a huge foundation, not so easy.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

Except we're not asking about 2007.  We're asking about 2000 to 2006

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

That doesn't explain why previous years' returns haven't yet been released as a sign of good faith.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

I can't answer your question, particularly as Obama has now released 7 more years of returns.

I would not, though, that by releasing tax returns 'at least three days' in advance of 22 April PA primary - say late in the day on 19 April - HRC might avoid detailed discussion during the confirmed 16 April and tentative 19 April debates with Obam.

Delaying tactics aside, what possible explanation can there be for not releasing on 15 April?

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

But isn't this worse? You want bad news EARLY, not later. I mean, is worse than the Wright stuff? That may have a long shelf-life, but the shock value ended after a week or so.

The Clintons were EXPERTS at the Friday doc dump. Always knew how to position bad news as well as good news.

What's going on here really baffles.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

And the same with this Bosnia trip. I mean, it has been weeks since she first made the comment -- and similar weeks since the first questions surfaced. I mean, the Sinbad comments were just a couple days later.

Wouldn't you want to double check your memory if it was so long ago? Why continue pushing a knowingly false story?

Again, I'm totally confused, mostly because I truly believe the Clintons' strongest skills are at handling and neutralizing bad news...

Re: This reminds me of a background check for a jo

See in the real world if someone is applying for a job and they are told that they must have a background check before they are hired most people would go ahead with the check because they know they wouldn't be hired. Why are the Clinton's any different?

Re: This reminds me of a background check for a jo

Ah, but in the real world, a potential employer is also allowed to question your experience, and no one is allowed to do that with Obama, lest they be called racists.

This works two ways...

Re: This reminds me of a background check for a jo

Huh?

Someone was called a racist for questioning Obama's experience?

By who?

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

I'm amazed how many otherwise intelligent people are responding that she is busy working on her taxes just like everybody else, as if the request is for this year's returns.

When her team announced that they would be releasing her returns around April 15, I thought it was kind of clever, but I also thought most people would be smart enough to realize that she was making a lame attempt to associate the release of past returns with this year's tax filing deadline. Guess I was wrong.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

I'm shocked to learn that Obama just released his tax returns today. How could Obama and his supporters have been up in arms, until today, that Hillary wasn't releasing hers? IOKIYO.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

He released 2006 and 2005 before now.  He released earlier tax returns today.  Hillary hasn't released any since she left the whitehouse.

Re: Sincere tax question... any sincere responses?

If I was advising her campaign as an accountant...I would want to release all the tax returns at once to make sure there are no anomolies across different years that require corrections because the Hillary haters (both Democrat and Republican) will be looking for every little descrepancy they can find to play gotcha with...

So it is doing a careful review of all the years together and making sure they are all OK...in addition, if she found an error or an omission in a previous years tax return she may want to file an ammended return as well.

So they will be released around the 15th that is plenty of time to look through them before the PA primary.

I looked through Obama's returns today and it took me all of 30 minutes.

I hope that answers your sincere questions...
