A big fence? What the (bleep) are they thinking?

I read where earlier today the House of Representatives voted to spend $1.8 Billion (that's billion with a "B") to build a 700 mile long fence along the U.S. - Mexico border.
They have also authorized the Department of Homeland Security, who was in charge of the Katrina debacle, to look into the feasibility of building a similar structure along the U.S. - Canada border. I wasn't even aware that we had a problem with filthy Canucks sneaking across the border to steal those high paying fruit picking and chicken chasing jobs Americans crave.
AND...they are requiring the Department of Homeland Security to enact a "virtual fence" over both borders that includes cameras, ground sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles and integrated surveillance technology. Five industry teams are competing for a multibillion-dollar contract to assemble the virtual fence, and the DHS expects to announce a winner by Sept. 30.
Hmmmm....I wonder if any of these companies donate heavily to any politicians? And what's the next step, armed Terminator robots patrolling the border? We don't have enough National Guard troops to do it, they're all in Iraq.
In the meantime the bill for the Iraq show now exceeds $314 Billion (again, that's billion with a "B").
Surely the American public can smell the election year posturing going on?
I agree immigration is a problem, but who in the hell thinks that a big old fence is going to stop illegals from crossing?
What we have here is a government (Republicans and Democrats) that have no idea how to fix a problem so they intend to throw an expensive, showy, "Look what we have done aren't you proud and don't forget to vote for us" band aid on the problem.
I don't remember receiving a call from any of my elected officials asking how I felt about this gargantuan waste of money. Did you?
And, just to be clear, I'm pissed at everybody that voted for this monstrosity no matter their party affiliation.
