Obama's BIGGEST GIFT to John McCain

Its a hot topic among political fanatics in Arizona. It was also discussed by Christopher Orr of the New Republic.
Pres.-Elect Barack Obama just gave Sen. John Mccain two gifts in the last two weeks. One of the gifts was a very big one.

First, Obama SAVED McCain's close friend, Joe Lieberman. Obama's message to the Senate Democratic of " I forgive Joe, lets move on" was big. It really pretty much saved Joe's neck. I'm sure McCain is very happy to see his dear friend Joe Lieberman escape this one.

Second, a huge gift for John Mccain.
President-Elect Obama just took out the one person who could have very likely ( in fact heavily favored) defeated John McCain in Arizona in 2010.
I am pretty sure the minute Governor Napolitano's pick was announced by the media, the entire John McCain Arizona team
had the biggest smile of the day.
Two head to head polls taken within the last 12 months showed Democrat Napolitano beating Mccain by a landslide double digit victory.
The Arizona Governors seat will also be difficult to hold by the Democrats. Our best hope would be Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford. If she runs, we have a very good shot of winning.

But McCain's seat would have been big !!!!

So many Arizona democrats were ready, excited & looking forward to knocking off McCain in 2010. That's too bad.

Re: Obama's

Not Gifford's.  In a bad Dem year her House seat would be gone to the Republicans in an open seat and she would likely be a heavy underdog against a Republican incumbent governor.

I don't think Mccain would lose,

as AZ was possibly gonna be a swing state, but McCain won it solidly. If 2010 is not 2008 or 2006, he would be at advantage. I'm sure we have other solid candidates there too, if this 50 state thing is really working.

I wish there was a way to pick a highly qualified person who doesn't cause a state to turn to a Republican Governor or Senator.  I really think Arizona seems to be trending Democratic and that there would seemingly be Democratic candidates who could succeed Napolitano as Governor, but they may not get a chance if the Republican gets in and then gets reelected due to the advantage of incumbency.

Can Mr. Obama get a Homeland Security Secretary for 2-years and then give it to Napolitano when her term as Governor is up?

The biggest gift

Obama's biggest gift to the American people will be a government that works properly without always descending into partisanship.

If Napolitano wants McCain's Senate seat, she can still resign as SecHomeland Security in early 2010.
