MyDD 2010 Launch Thread

Let this be an open thread for issues relating to the launch of the new MyDD.com.  No software is perfect and some of you will run into issues with the new platform.  The best way to resolve all of this and get things right is to let us know in this thread or by direct contact.

The site is now running on a piece of software we created from the ground up called netroots2.  More on that and a more in-depth nerdy post on whats going on here in the new year...

Missing Info
The "About" page, TU guidelines, and FAQ are all missing - clicking on them results in a MyDD page that simply says "Not Found". Poor new users. :(

The lefthand blogads ad needs to shift left,
it's overlaying the comments in wide mode. Also too bad the ability to see your own comment list seems to be missing. All-in-all a good upgrade from first glances, though. Interested to see how it all works out.

RE: RE: The lefthand blogads ad needs to shift left,
The ad seems to have been moved now, but the error was just that it was below a bullet and therefore indented to the right.

couple things
From home page, if you refresh it, the comment counts on diaries set back to zero. Trusted User, FAQ, and About links are dead/not found. Personal preference, but, Rec'd diaries/user diaries ought be closer to top of Right column.....either move Breaking Blue to the Left Column, or, only put like 2 or 3 of most recent Breaking Blue links/entries at top of Right Column. Search Function should be available near top of page in Left or Right Column. Overall looks good, though....thanks!

RE: RE: couple things
i made the font sizes relative and are basically equivalent to google's sizing. refresh and let me know how it looks.

RE: couple things
oh, and my original comment was typed out with double space between each 'item'....so they were set apart like single sentence paragraphs...but, upon posting, was all smooshed together

RE: couple things
/grin...and you can Rec your own comments...so, I guess one could make a lot of bs comments and rec them and get TU all by one's self? User Page no longer has any user info...not a list of comments/ratings/etc...that is a handy and oft used function I believe. Site does not remember if you set it to Wide if you navigate away and return via a bookmark.

RE: RE: couple things
You can flag a comment on the side as spam, troll or inappropriate. Perhaps that is designed to bring it to the administrator's attention and let them decide what to do with it rather than hiding it automatically from those without trusted user status.

What's the 'Follow ' button for?
I don't want to be accused of cyber-stalking, but how's the follow button work?
by QTG 2009-12-31 07:09AM | 2 recs
Overall, really nice looking
I really like the overall layout, but the font size for the comments is very tiny... like almost disclaimer size. Otherwise, it's a very clean looking design.

Will the "Preview" function return?
I like previewing my diaries before hitting the "post" button in order to see what my entry will look like as well as to proofread. The preview function is a good thing to have.
by Andre Walker 2009-12-31 01:46PM | 2 recs
Agreed that helps to proofread..
It is a necessary function for a prolific mistake maker like myself.

All in one place (to date)
* About, TU Guidelines, and FAQ are non-functioning.
* Site does not remember WIDE mode choice and must be click each time one has navigated away.
* User page no longer has a list of comments and ratings...not even your own.
* Ought be fewer Breaking Blue links at top of Right Column (most recent 2-3 would be plenty)
* 'Next' link to see previous posts is non-functioning.
* Comment counts are all sorts of screwed up, will show different counts on each refresh from home page. Also, does not show 'New' comments, so unless you memorize how many comments were in a diary last time you looked you will not know if there are replies....and new comments within the diary do not show as 'New'.
* Comments font/size is way too small.
List of bugs, suggestions, etc...from comments thus far to Kyle's and Jerome's MyDD Launch diaries:
* Cannot see who has rec'd a diary or comment. Only one rating option for comments.
* Font/size of text in diary is 'off' (perhaps too large?)
* List of 'Recent Comments' in Right Column missing.
* Preview option for comments needed.
* Search option needs to be up top of either Left or Right Column.
* Not preserving White Space in comments...which means one has to use (minus space) to avoid comment running all together. Frustrating.
* It is mighty white. Bright.
* Refreshing home page is interesting in that it will change comment counts (lower them), add diaries that were not previously seen upon first opening page, and other 'minor' things seemingly at random.
Some of these points have already been replied to, just figured it might help to have em all in one place.
by Kysen 2009-12-31 02:30PM | 1 recs
RE: All in one place (to date)
Let me add:
Comment box is waaaaaay too small...with no preview it is near impossible to edit properly...even with preview it would be a pain in the ass.

Thanks, will do. I am outta here for the night. I've got them all down on tickets and Kyle will hammer it out over the weekend. It will take us a few weeks or a bit to get everything we want here, but it will rock eventually.

RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: All in one place (to date)
Hate to pile it on, but on this computer running Windows 2000, the left column overlaps the center one and cuts off the text. Lot of work ahead.

RE: RE: RE: All in one place (to date)
Hey Jerome, can I second that? A larger comment box and a preview button would be great.

Thank's for all the hard work on the updates. I't like MyDD of the future. I am so glad I came here.

Also, maybe I'm doing something wring, but I have to use HTML to insert line breaks using the br tag. Can there be a way for commenters to be able to use the old fahsioned carriage return?

how do you embed hyperlinks?
I am trying to write a new post, and the usual code for embedding hyperlinks (a href= etc) doesn't seem to be working. Here is an example: Progressive Punch has a search engine that lets you view how individual members of Congress have voted in certain issue categories.
by desmoinesdem 2010-01-01 12:30PM | 0 recs
ok, it seems to work in a comment
but when I am reading my diary draft, I can't see the embedded hyperlinks. Maybe I'll just try publishing on the front page to see if it works.
by desmoinesdem 2010-01-01 12:31PM | 0 recs
RE: ok, it seems to work in a comment
The HMTL editor function worked to a point. As long as I was in editing the links appeared but when I published it went back to showing the code. Not quite sure what else to try.
by Charles Lemos 2010-01-01 05:43PM | 0 recs
RE: ok, it seems to work in a comment
Well if you click on the comments to read the post then the links do show up but if you just look at the front page the coding shows up.
by Charles Lemos 2010-01-01 05:51PM | 0 recs
No Preview Button for comments.
"Preview" is the pause that refreshes and the single greatest tool to prevent flaming reactionarianism. Nothing like seeing your own words in print for a moment to show you that you might have stated your point a tad too strongly. It also is the best editorial tool. As it stands one cannot see their entire comment and scan for errors. I prefer "Preview" to be mandatory.
by chrisblask 2010-01-01 02:32PM | 0 recs
RE: No Preview Button for comments.
Right, I like the mandatory preview as well.
by Jerome Armstrong 2010-01-01 03:22PM | 0 recs
Oh man, no Newline character in comments.
Critical Need. You have to be able to create paragraphs and insert whitespace. Lacking that may be the one way to get rid of me, without it you can't make more than single-paragraph comments.

support for already mentioned
Main bones to pick so far: "comments" font is too small Both "login" and "Wide" (or "Narrow," I suppose) options should be "remembered." A nuisance to have to log in every time I visit the site.

RE: new comments implementation

Things done:

We need to gray the edges of the width, loke dkos and sbnation do, light gray.

A user should be able to just put in a link, and that works, w/o the html tags

The narrow width needs to be expanced from the 925 width. Wasn't the plan to make it 1050 or something? upped it to 1000px min width. want to keep it in frame for 1024x768 monitors.

Site does not remember if you set it to Wide if you navigate away and return via a bookmark. The problem here is browser caching as far as i can tell. Narrow/Wide is working since my last fix.

From home page, if you refresh it, the comment counts on diaries set back to zero. Frequently, posts show up and then disappear, even ones that were deleted. Comment counts are not logged. There appear to be some funky data calls going on. This was a result of major caching issues which i wont attempt to explain here. Anyway, this has been resolved.

Have BreakingBlue posts on MyDD only the last 3

Have Recommended Diaries only the top 3

Not preserving White Space in comments...which means one has to use (minus space) to avoid comment running all together. Frustrating.

On the diary entry, it states "Blockquotes now need just opening<> and closing / brackets." but this doesn't work. Is there a way to integate the blockquote within the wysiwig?

The Next Link at the bottom of the page brings you up to the top not back to previous posts.

Add poll feature to diary its there.

Pics 3 & 5 are from trying to facebook the post. For some reason, they are pulling in blogads and CSM logos, instead of the mydd logo.

The breaking blue posts on mydd in the upper right column are too bold. We should have those be a normal font entry, which can be of a smaller size too, and the name in italics, as is. This should be the case on breakingblue in the column of recent bb posts too.

There should never be more than 5 diaries on the Recommended Diaries list.

We need to be able to blockquote, with the blue shade in the background, quotes in posts. I don't see how that's done, but also, it looks like many of the blockquotes were carried over in the archives. blockquotes work. just the tinymce issue.

Lets make that @2009MyDD into a @2010MyDD

We need to put up a "Powered by WSG" link/icon at the bottom in the footer too.

Picture 6, when I recommend a comment, it flashes the green confirmation, good, but shows 0 recs there, when it should show 1 rec (that I just gave it). This was a caching issue. should be fixed, verify.

Comment box to small, widen to full width of regular posting column. Also lengthen a bit & add preview to comment.

Shorten recent BB posts on sidebar to just the latest 3.

Nice looking upgrade.

It should be really nice once the profile functionality is added back in, like choosing the number of diaries for the new diary list and being able to see who has replied to one of your comments. Good job.
