The Republicans deserved to lose Florida

Put aside Iraq, Afghanistan, the financial melt down, Katrina, embarrassing behavior, inarticulate statements, etc. The Republicans would still have deserved to lose Florida.

"Republican Party of Florida chairman Jim Greer charged personal expenses to the state party during a fundraiser this summer, adding fresh details to growing complaints that his money management was hurting the party. Confronted with a $5,100 bill showing he used party money on spa treatments, seafood dinners and limousines during a party fundraiser at the

Breakers Hotel, Greer said he would reimburse the party for some of the expenses Friday. The hotel bill obtained by The Miami Herald/St. Pete Times showed that Greer and his wife spent $3,600 on a dinner at the hotel's Brasserie L'Escalier, $200 on spa services, $137 at the seafood bar and $80 on a limousine to the airport during a two-day fundraiser for incoming Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater." rida/story/801575.html

Now put aside the low class petty corruption. (Charging your wife's massage at a luxury hotel to campaign funds? How stupid and tacky!)

"New post-election GOP filings show the state party still had $1.37 million cash at the end of a period extending from Oct. 14 to Nov. 24 with $432,000 in outstanding bills, according to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission detailing the party's federal election account. Several members of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign in Florida said they were told the party's federal account had been tapped dry in the final weeks, forcing them to scramble for money to buy yard signs and radio ads in Florida. ''They almost had daily rebellions at headquarters because people were begging for bumper stickers yard signs and buttons,'' said Ana Navarro, a major fundraiser for McCain's campaign. ''We had no money for food for volunteers,'' she said. ``Practically every Republican in Florida knew we had no money, so I cannot understand it other than to think they were saving it for another campaign at another time.'' rida/story/801575.html

Obama carried Florida by a tad under 250,000 votes. Most of that came from Broward County, which Obama carried by a little over 250,000 votes. And the Republicans sat on $1 million cash on hand? They spent none of that in South Florida to deflate Obama or in North Florida to inflate McCain?

Put aside policy. They deserved to lose Florida for being incompetent!

CROSS POSTED AT FAR RIGHT DEMOCRAT and anywhere else they'll let me

The McCain campaign was incompetent.

Next earth shattering headlines:
The grass is green.
The sky is blue.
Snow is white.

But to end the campaign with $1 million in cash
in FLA, and then lose FLA by a few hundred thousand votes?
It almost seems like the Florida Republican Party wanted McCain to lose.
I don't understand how you end a campaign with unspent cash ala John Kerry.

How it went down (maybe).

As the Congresscritters like to say: I'd like to revise and extend my remarks.

1)  No enthusiasm (see John Kerry in certain states)
Wingnuts often control the local party and they didn't like McCain.

2)  Organization Good organizations have people with clear portfolios.  This allows them to reach down to the lower levels.  McCain, on the other hand, took people from disparate camps.  This never works from a hierarchical perspective.  The Bushies never quite fit in there and when you have liasons to local parties, often the person who should be telling the party to spend won't.

3)  Local parties don't like to spend on losers.  After the financial crisis, McCain was viewed as done.

Some of these sorts of things are causes and some are symptoms.  All of these things reinforce one another.

Re: But to end the campaign with $1 million

To me, the most likely explanation is that Florida Republicans knew that McCain was going to lose anyway, even if he carried Florida, and so decided to save the money to ensure they keep the governorship in 2010 rather than spend it on a lost cause.

Re: The Republicans deserved to lose Florida

Florida was an obvious get for the Democrats, regardless of what the Republicans were doing or not doing.  One Million bucks would not have shaken this race up, it was virtually predestined to go to us in this particular alignment, despite the fact that McCain was a natural Republican candidate in this more moderate state with high military presence.

1. Bill Clinton carried the state.

2. George Bush stole this state with the help of his brother and Katherine Harris in 2000.

3. There are over 600,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans in this state.  Even IF Republicans would have come out enthused it would have been hard to make up the Democratic advantage via better turnout.

Pissing off Crist and avoiding the Bush's

is a bad move in Florida.  Without full-throated support from Crist and Jeb it's a tough state for a Republican to win.

Re: The Republicans

Lets see what 2010 brings in FL.  My guess it is will be back to its old snake handling, speaking in tongues ways in most of the state and Republicans, especially, Jeb will do fine.
