I still believe that, if one works hard, it is possible to go from the bottom to the top. As you blutnly admit, however, it is much more difficult than it was in the past.

I would attribute this factor to the increasing cost of education. A student going to a decent, four year college can easily leave owing $30-40,000 in loans. Should that student attend graduate school, law school, business school, medical school, or pursue a Ph.D, the cost can easily rise to more than $100,000.

I'm 28 and am relatively new to the workforce. But what is holding me back is the fact that I owe a ton in student loans. I went to graduate school immediately after college because I was afraid that, if I didn't go then, I would NEVER go at all. I will be paying the government back for the next 30 years.

What I have struggled with is starting. I can't apply for entry-level jobs because hiring managers tell me that I am "too qualified". Also the salary in these positions is really, really low.  I can't apply for mid-level positions either because I don't have "enough experience". So, in between both positions, I have had difficulty finding work.

I do think that, eventually, I will be able to get ahead. But it's going to be at least ten years from now.

  • How do I do that?

They want to defund the Census Bureau in order to ensure that the population counts avoids those people that are hard to find through traditional methods.

Why is this a surprise? Clinton was not going to endorse Ned Lamont. I think that a lot of you have unrealistic expectations that elected Democrats are going to turn against Lieberman to appease the fringe left of the party. Unless Lieberman molests children, kills people, or is involved in something extremely criminal beyond the decent of humankind, elected Democrats aren't going to support Ned Lamont. That's the reality.

I do agree, though, that Clinton is part of the past. That's why I am not inclined to support Hillary in 2008. The party does need to go beyond the Clintons.

  • Again I think too many people here link the DLC to everything wrong with the party. There were many other reasons why the Democratic Party's electoral fortunes have waned in the last decade that extend beyond the DLC.

These involve the 1) final realingment of the South to the GOP and 2) the majority-minority redistricting schemes of the 1990s and early 2000s.

  • Just because he wasn't a Michael Moore fringe leftist doesn't make him the "Greatest Republican President of our lifetime". Indeed, if he was "The Greatest Republican President of our lifetime", the Republicans wouldn't have tried to destroy him from Day 1. Your comment is so stupid.

I am having difficulties reaching this page from the front page. Each time I try to click it I end up watching some YouTube video. This is an ongoing problem I've had with this site.

  • comment on a post NV-Sen: Jack Carter TV ads over 8 years ago

Sarah--these ads need a lot of work. First of all there is no imagery associated with them. It's just your father talking. What I would do instead is have pictures of him in Georgia flash on the screen, a photo in his Naval uniform, and so forth. All I see is a man talking. That isn't good because peoples' eyes will glaze over if they aren't bombared with images.

Secondly, the other ad is too wordy--and not to the point. There's not a very simple soundbite to it. Instead he puts a laundry list of things that are wrong, but doesn't connect them into a one or two short sentence slogan. He also doesn't say what he would do for NV.

Just some ideas. I think the ads need to be improved.

  • I can't believe you are defending a traitorous scumbag like John Walker Lindh.

  • Well I agree with Barletta here. I am glad that the law passed. Although I'm not a Republican, I support this legislation. Frankly he is actually targetting the companies and the businesses who HIRE the illegals. He's doing the right thing.

I can't believe you are defending a traitor to this country like John Walker Lindh. He fought for our enemies and fought against our troops. That you defend scum like this traitorous piece of trash sickens me.

  • Again I don't agree with every choice that Emmanuel makes, but he probably sees Schneider as a two-time loser. She ran twice and didn't really improve her performance against Harris. Maybe it is time for someone new.

Emmanuel's job is to recruit candidates who can win elections, not appease the fringe left of the party. I didn't agree with what he did in Illinois. His job is to elect Democfrats, not appease the far left of the party.

  • I hope you're right. But if Lamont and Lieberman split the Democratic base, a Republican could conceivably win this race with 30-35% of the vote.

  • comment on a post Lamont Blog on Lieberman's Defection over 8 years ago

Is this really going to be worth it? Now there is the potential for a very nightmarish scenario to follow. If Lamont wins the primary, and Lieberman runs as a third party, this now opens the potential for some no-name Republican to win a three-way race. Now it would even be more upsetting if the Democrats win all the close Senate race and this seat ends up giving control back to the Republicans? Will it have been worth it to acheive such a pyrrich victory?

Would Lieberman caucus with the GOP if he wins as an indepedent? That's the other scenario that could be nightmarish.
