Jerome Owes Us an Explanation

I have been giving Jerome a REALLY hard time recently on his pushing of all things Clinton.

I was heartened to see earlier today he "doesn't have a problem" with Obama.

And I don't have a problem with Clinton necessarily.  I just prefer Obama.

So I have to know-

Why Clinton?

My questions for Jerome (or anyone else) in extended.

Michigan and Florida should revote

What did the legislatures of Michigan and Florida want?

They wanted campaigns to spend money in the state and for their vote to matter.

Ironically, had they allowed those states to go, say, next week, they would have played kingmaker.

The DNC should offer to have Michigan and Florida revote 1-2 weeks after the Texas/Ohio primary March 3rd.

These states would certainly play kingmaker under that scenerio, the delegates would be seated and the campaigns could fight fair 'n square- may the best candidate win.

(It also repairs whatever damage was done to Dems for November).

Some thoughts and predictions

A few thoughts and predictions in the wake of last night:

1) A Clinton/Obama ticket is more than likely if Clinton wins and it remains close.

Obama is gonna have a lot of cash, and it won't be needed by him for his Illinois Senate seat.  One good use:  if he's the Veep nominee he can use it for the general election campaign through the convention.  That plus whatever Hillary would have would give the Dems a likely HUGE cash advantage through the summer (opposite of Kerry).

Why We Should Root For Huckabee

Many of the recent discussions of the joy Democrats are having watching Huckabee split the GOP are missing a crucial point.

Many Dems are rooting for Huckabee because:

  1.  It splits the GOP and causes distracting in-fighting.

  2. It exposes the corporate wing's exploitation and contempt of Christians

  3. Huckabee is perceived to be a "nut" and is a weak candidate

  4. If Huckabee gets shunted will Christians turn out for gay-friendly Guiliani, Mormon Romney or Hollywood Fred?

  5. Bushco has clearly chosen Romney, etc. over Huckabee, and they are being repudiated by the grassroots of their own party.

I want to focus on #5, because this in my opinion is key.  The bottom line:
THE BEST WAY TO DEFEAT BUSHCO AND THE NEOCONS IS FOR MIKE HUCKABE E TO BE THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE.

Dem Veepstakes: Pre-season

Dodd's recent endorsement by the firefighters and his strong performance in the debates has me thinking about the veepstakes.  Who is in the running for each respective nominee?

If Dodd manages some third place finishes, my thought is that he may be #2 on Clinton's veep list, especially given polls showing the only blue state flipped by Guiliani is Connecticut.

Below the fold... some rankings for each candidate...

2008 Senate Ratings

Wow.  The 2008 Senate looks good.  No matter what the GOP does to us to steal the Senate back (lure Joementum, appt Joe Sec of Huckleberry Hound, Rell appts Shays as replacement) we should take it back big in 2008, even without coattails.

2008 Senate Forecast
11/8/2006

GOP Targets
Not many.

Toss-up.
LA. Mary Landrieu. The new NOLA vote will make it tough for a Dem to win.

NJ. Lautenburg. We seem to have trouble with Jersey.  We'll need to do some solid recruiting to keep this seat.

OVERALL:  6 solid Dem Pick-up opportunities.  2 potential Dem losses.  3-4 more interesting Dem opporunities.

Let's Commission Exit Polls in 2006

After the revelations in JFK Jr's new Rolling Stone article, and given the fact that it appears there will once again be NO EXIT POLLS conducted...

My proposal:

The blogosphere should raise money to commission a few exit polls in districts in which there is a close race and non-paper trail Diebold machines are used.

Though its not close, I would certainly start with MD Senate.  The excuse of the "black vote broke for Steele" could be used if Cardin experiences the kind of negative swing experienced by Cleland in GA '02.

Why Edwards

In response to Sitkah's Breaking Blue snark.

Why Edwards?

First, its safe to say a large majority of us do not believe Hillary can be elected President.  Her negatives are too high, she energizes the right wing base, and most of all she is politically not where most of us are (Iraq).

Its also safe to say that if we stand any chance as Dems in 2008 we have to unite behind a single candidate to take on Hillary.  For many reasons Gore would be my preference (that's another diary).  Until then... who has the best shot at

  1. running this country the way it needs to be run
  2. actually winning in 2008
  3. Having enough momentum to beat Hillary
  4. bringing a solid vision and purpose to the White House

So far I have only seen one candidate who brings those qualities: John Edwards
