Rove was caught for leaking to Novak in '92 and was fired by Bush Sr.

From the diaries--Chris

I had forgotten about this:

Rove fired from Bush Sr's '92 campaign over leak to Novak. Karl Rove was fired from the 1992 re-election campaign of Bush Sr. for allegedly leaking a negative story about Bush loyalist/fundraiser Robert Mosbacher to Novak. Novak's piece described a meeting organized by then-Senator Phil Gramm at which Mosbacher was relieved of his duties as state campaign manager because "the president's re-election effort in Texas has been a bust." Rove was fired after Mosbacher fingered him as Novak's source.

Rove was the "only one with a motive to leak": Mosbacher says: "I said Rove is the only one with a motive to leak this. We let him go." The motive in question? Mosbacher had given Rove only a quarter of the $1 million spent on direct mail contracts for the 92 campaign; Rove, who in 1988 had the entire direct mail contract, therefore had an axe to grind with Mosbacher. Novak's column stated: "Also attending the session was political consultant Karl Rove, who had been shoved aside by Mosbacher."

Mosbacher still says Rove did it: Although Novak and Rove continue to deny Rove was the source of the leak, Mosbacher recently stated "I still believe he did it."

(Sources: "Karl and Bob: a leaky history," Houston Chronicle, Nov. 7, 2003, ; "Genius," Texas Monthly, March 2003, p. 82; "Why Are These Men Laughing," Esquire, January 2003)

Update (Chris): Rep. Slaughter points out that Bush promised to fire whoever was responsible for the leak:
During a White House Press Briefing on September 30, 2003 President Brush said the following in response to a question regarding the leaking of Valerie Plame's identity, "... if there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is. And if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of." When asked at a post G-8 Summit News Conference on June 10, 2004 if he stood by his statement that he would fire whoever was responsible for the leak, Bush said, "Yes. And that's up to the U.S. attorney to find the facts."
We know that Rove was responsible for the leak. Now, let's see Bush keep his word.

MSM silence
This story is getting no attention at all in the MSM. The grilling of Scott was a good step forward but the silence up to now of a 10 day old story is deafening. Why hasn't anyone brought up this fact about 1992?

Where is our Walter Cronkite?

Is there one iota of difference between the Bush White House and the mob?

BushCo and the Mob
Is there one iota of difference between the Bush White House and the mob?

There is a HUGE difference --

BushCo brought us Hitler, Nazi Germany, WWII, the Holocaust, the Cold War, the CIA, Nixon, the Bay of Pigs, the JFK Assassination, Vietnam, Nixon, Reagan, Iran-Contra, Saddam, Osama, and now -- Dubya.

The Mob is just a bunch of two-bit gangsters, compared with BushCo.

I am happy with Bush
I am not happy with Rove. I
really think bush could do a good
job if we could just help him get
the right people up there. Rove is
a nonstop political campaign. It just
gets so old.

That is not what Bush said
Read your quote--no where does it say fire and it only says if it is found that that person broke the law. That is not going to be the case.

Bush Admin Has Said Leaker Will Be Fired
Did you read this part?

When asked at a post G-8 Summit News Conference on June 10, 2004 if he stood by his statement that he would fire whoever was responsible for the leak, Bush said, "Yes. And that's up to the U.S. attorney to find the facts."

Scott McClellan also has confirmed several times that firing is what will happen to the leaker when found. Or is this language not clear enough?

via billmon:

No one wants to get to the bottom of this matter more than the President of the United States. If someone leaked classified information, the President wants to know. If someone in this administration leaked classified information, they will no longer be a part of this administration, because that's not the way this White House operates.

Re: Bush Admin Has Said Leaker Will Be Fired
Yes I read the whole thing--no where in there does it say that the person wll be fired. It says that they will be dealt with and the part you asked me if I read said the finder of fact would be the US Atorney, and apparently he has decided that no crime has been committed.

Re: Bush Admin Has Said Leaker Will Be Fired
Ok .....

If someone in this administration leaked classified information, they will no longer be a part of this administration, because that's not the way this White House operates.

They will be asked to resign.
Given their walking papers.
Booted.
Terminated.
Let go.

Re: Bush Admin Has Said Leaker Will Be Fired
Well there you go--that was the quote to use. It wasn't the ones from Kos--hell one of them was from Bush Senior and the context of the question was iffy at best.

I am going to post your quote on my blog where I talked about this this morning:

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Bush Admin Has Said Leaker Will Be Fired
Oh and not to be too big a pain in the butt--but was Valeri Plame's identity classified?

I think this White House has been very careful about how they have spoken about this and I think Karl Rove keeps his job.

Re: Bush Admin Has Said Leaker Will Be Fired
Judith Miller's lawyer, Floyd Abrams, was interviewed on the Al Franken show yesterday and made some good points.

First there is a special prosecutor and if this ever goes to trial the very first thing he would do is put a CIA type on the stand to testify to Plame's status. Any prosecutor who at this stage of the game  who hasn't already reserched this basic element of the crime would be an idiot.  By now he would of announced the investigation has reveled no crime.

Second, in a decision againt Miller and Cooper a very sympathetic judge agreed with most of their arguments but stated that the seriousness of the crime was so great that he had to rule against them. This judge had access to most of the facts and he thinks there was a crime.

On the other hand an interesting point brought up by Abrams was that the person guilty of the crime is the person who crossed the bright line between people with a security clearance who knew Plame's ID and the rest of us.
If Rove did not have a security clearnce then the person who told Rove is guilty unless they didn't have clearance etc. etc.
Abrams said a common problem with former Governor presidents is that they have no national security experinece and then get in office and don't know that when they get a classified briefing they are not free to discuss it with just anyone.

Maybe Bush is the one who told Rove.

Rove leaked to Novak in 1992 or 1980??

Now I'm confused. I wrote about Rove leaking to Novak and being fired, but the date I have is 1980. I have three sources including the documentary, Bush's Brain (I didn't go back and rewatch it, but found an online review that refers to the leak).

The sources at Bust Bob Novak, which you point to, are all dead links. Do you know of any more that are accessible?

At my blog:

Every time I hear Bush's name (sr. or jr.)  in any article I got the feeling everything about it is subjective. I don't trust mass media and I try to keep my distance, try to make my own opinions. I think this is a major problem our society.

Fossil fuels will be gone within your lifetime, and while Bush's administration has been touting hydrogen as a potential replacement for oil, it takes more energy to create hydrogen than we'll ever get from the stuff. Unless we get serious about alternative fuels--and pronto--expect ever-skyrocketing oil costs, bloody wars over resources and economic collapse.

In Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, you can see for yourself what a useless lump Bush was on the morning of Sept. 11 as he sat in that classroom, staring into space while kids read My Pet Goat. This time, Moore's actually hired some decent factcheckers, and for a line-by-line, factual backup of many of the film's most damning claims against Bush
