A Bullshit Cover-up from Michelle Obama

This is what Michelle Obama actually said...
"For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change."

and this is her subsequent "clarification"...
"What I was clearly talking about was that I'm proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process," she said. "For the first time in my lifetime, I'm seeing people rolling up their sleeves in a way that I haven't seen and really trying to figure this out -- and that's the source of pride that I was talking about," she added.

I love the part where she claims she was "clearly talking about" something completely different from what she said! It reminds me of Humpty Dumpty in Through the Looking Glass...
"When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."

"For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country."

Maybe it's time Michelle Obama learned a little something about the Bill of Rights, the Emancipation Proclamation, the New Deal, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

"For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country."

Maybe it's time Michelle Obama took a walk around Arlington National Cemetery, and thought about the 418,500 Americans who gave their lives to defeat the Nazis, and hundreds of thousands of others who never fully recovered from injuries sustained in that conflict, like my own father, and the 58,209 men and women who died in Vietnam and all the brave men and women who risk their lives under the American flag in Iraq and Afghanistan, however much their honest patriotism has been abused by criminals in the White House.

What did Michelle Obama or her blathering husband ever sacrifice for the United States of America?

I don't believe your "clarification," Michelle Obama! Anybody can make a mistake, and anybody can say something stupid, but it takes a special sort of arrogance to insult your country and then try to laugh it off with a bullshit cover-up of what you actually said.

exact quotes

Speaking in Milwaukee, Wis., on Monday, she said:

"People in this country are ready for change and hungry for a different kind of politics and ... for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback."

Obama delivered an amended version of the speech later that day in Madison, Wis.

"For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country ... not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change," she said. "I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment."

This is disgusting.  This isn't the place to attack and question the patriotism of other Democrats.  I'm glad Hillary hasn't stooped to your level.

Thanks for the link to Taylor Marsh. He does a really good job of explaining why so many people are offended by Ms. Obama's remark, and providing context for the impact it may have on the general election. That's a very smart guy!

Re: A Bullshit Cover-up from Michelle Obama

were you ok with those calling bob kerry, cuomo and bill clinton racists?

by Seymour Glass 2008-02-20 05:11PM | 0 recs
Re: A Bullshit Cover-up from Michelle Obama

With the exception of Bob Kerrey, "racist" would be going too far, but "race baiting" may apply.

As for Kerry, his remarks didn't have much to do with race, but were reprehensible for their own reason.

well

What did Michelle Obama or her blathering husband ever sacrifice for the United States of America?

she is on record complaining that she wasnt making what her 'peers' did ...but the 200 grand raise from the "not for profit" hospital after hubbie got the senate seat had to help a little...

Re: Hmmm

Because EVERYONE who disagrees with ANYTHING the Obamas do or say is obviously a Reich-wing racist who just can't wait to string up unsuspecting minorities who wander too near Washington.

Good way to suppress legitimate voices of dissent in public discourse - create an oppressive atmosphere of fear.

Re: Hmmm

You do realize that my signature is a quote from a MyDD poster...

It just amazes me how Bill Clinton, who was president for eight years, a lawyer, and Rhodes Scholar, can make a gaffe, and you all defend him, because, ya know, he didn't mean to say that.

But Michelle Obama... O, she must have known better...

Please, when you stop associating with Pat Buchanan and Billo, please, come back to the party.

by Wiz in Wis 2008-02-20 06:37PM | 0 recs
Re: Hmmm

it was in a written speech.  It wasn't a gaff.

Re: A Bullshit Cover-up from Michelle Obama

What exactly do you Hillary supporters think this is going to accomplish?  Accusing a democrat of being unpatriotic or un-American because you are supporting the opposing candidate?

The only thing this shows is how low you will go to have your way.

The fact is, the same can be said about any Obama supporters who unfairly attack Hillary or her side.

What the hell is wrong with you people?  You have the same level of common decency of Karl Rove.

Re: A Bullshit Cover-up from Michelle Obama

I thought Chelsea was fair game as per Obama supporters even though she isnt a spouse of a candidate. So Michelle is fair game too, isnt it?

Michelle has never done anything for the party and then she disrespects Clintons. She is new to all this but expects us to bow down and respect her. She went to South Carolina to play race card for votes. How low!!

Just another perspective:-)

Re: A Bullshit Cover-up from Michelle Obama

Wow!  What on earth do you think will happen with this story if Obama is the nominee????  You don't think the GOP would do 1000 times as much with it?

What's funny is so many Obamans (not all but quite a few I've seen here today) react the same way they react to any criticism of Obama: bitching about Hillary.

Why oh why can't any Obama supporter ever ever admit that there has been a gaffe, a poor decision, a stupid mistake?  People don't stop being people, complete with all the human frailities that afflict us all, just because they are in a political campaign.  You know, Obama could start regaining some credibility if the Obamagospel could be toned down some.  Mrs. Obama said a dumb inflammatory remark, end of story.

at least "fellow Democrats" aren't calling her a corporate shill, a war-monger, a liar and a dirty politician.

It's a credit to the Obama's that for all the desperate searching of mud, all they can come up with is Rezko, plagiarism, and this comment.  The Republicans are going to have a long year.

Re: A Bullshit Cover-up from Michelle Obama

Why are Obama supporters so scared of Hillary supporters suddenly?

And if something is so wrong with this site, what are you doing here? Go to a place which makes you feel right.

Just because myDD is high on unique hits and visited/read by many "real" democrats, you are now afraid of it? So suddenly, you felt the urge to pacify Hillary supporters?

Re: A Bullshit Cover-up from Michelle Obama

Im glad you know what Michelle Obama wanted to say.  Thats pretty impressive.  I think if you gave speeches every single day and every single word you said was recorded, you might phrase a few things in ways you did not intend as well.

And it's not just military

I am very proud of this country every time I see an INS naturalization ceremony.  People from all over this planet going through so much red tape to become Americans despite the blemishes, the regrettable history in certain areas, and the promises still unfulfilled.  How can anyone not be proud?  Yes, I wish politicians were more bold, I wish history had turned out different (especially for people who have been shat upon by others), and that we didn't have a historic primary going on here (meaning that we would have had a female pres and a black pres long ago).  But not to see anything to have been proud of...wow.

America and Americans 9/12/01

nothing to be proud of there.  At least if you're Michelle.

Last I checked
The Bill of Rights, Emancipation Proclamation, Civil rights act and WW2 all happened before 1982, the beginning of Michelle Obama's "adult lifetime." Let it go, folks. It was an imperfectly worded idea, not an I Hate America diatribe.

f-ing princeton...

god i hate that school and the pretentious twits who chose to go there.

Are you guys mad because you actually believe that she doesn't love her country, or that this didn't hurt Obama politically as much as you hoped? Thanks
