Drudge Shocker

Matt Drudge has a headline claiming that a 20 year old McCain campaign workers was attacked and mutilated in Pittsburgh and a 'B' was carved into her forehead. No link is provided.

Matt Drudge continues to have the luxury of yelling fire in a crowded room for attention, and the media returns to the theater after each and every time.

I wish I could be a millionaire by fabricating urban legends.

Because Drudge was right twice in the past (he is, literally, the stopped clock that is right twice a day), the media will lavish him with attention in the hopes that his sensational claim is true again.

While this story has yet to picked up by the MSM, I write simply to urge caution in handling such potentially unsubstantiated rumors and warn that (should this horrible story be true) damage control will certainly be required.

I would've said "O" would be a better thing to carve into a McCain volunteer.

"B" could, you know, stand for Bob Dole.  Or Bush.  Or Beat it, Hippy!

Anyway, while I feel for anyone who has been violently attacked, I don't care.

The Obama campaign is responsible for some acknowledge criminal who was already committing a crime......

Sheesh...I suppose you're right, the pundits will salivate over this, nothing like the spector of black on white crime...even though this is dispicable, that is what they will focus on.

Why did she refuse medical attention? Not to be skeptical, but I remember when Bush got into office, there were reports that Clinton's people had vandalized the White House. Those weren't true.

Maybe this is completely true. Obama needs to call for people to turn this bastard in immediately. Not that I think he wouldn't, but goddamn, he needs to not only look good for the campaign, he needs to make sure nobody does this ever again.

Let the story develop. Drudge is atill saying McCain volunteer, but the news report does not say that. She just had a bumper sticker. Drudge is making it sound like a volunteer was attacked purely on ideological gorunds and not on pure crazy.

I agree that Obama should address, and he could do that from HI, but let the story develop a bit. It's still not clear what the truth is yet.

Re: WHY?

When a crime has political motivations, it's the job of politicians to explicitly condemn it.

This now looks more like a hoax -- but still the principle applies: when a crime has political connotations, a proper politician condemns it immediately and more harshly that he'd care to condemn any ordinary crime.

Staying silent when dealing with political violence is a way to indirectly support it -- trust me, I know from my own country (Greece) and the obscene attitudes of certain political parties there.

But as I said, this now looks more likely to be a hoax. Still the response by the Obama campaign was appropriate.

Re: Drudge Shocker

I know this story will get attention and lots of outrage on Fox news.  But it's not like she was canvassing for McCain and got beat up.  Or like someone from the Obama campaign beat her up.  This was a mugging that was violent and then the "B" thing happened almost subsequently.

Obviously I'm not condoning this sort of thing, but what does it have to do with the Obama campaign?

Yeah, there is a couple things.

This guy is a black man, armed robber and apparently a fervent Obama supporter.

The victim is a young white woman and McCain supporter.

Drudge says she's a staffer, but that has not been reported yet, regardless, this feeds that white fear narrative the Palinites are fomenting.

That poor woman. I feel for her. Something tells me she will be the new Joe the Plumber.

Re: Drudge Shocker

It's not really as you described it. It wasn't a campaign worker. Just a woman with a McCain sticker on her car. And the B was scratched into her face, not carved.  I wouldn't want anything scratched into my face but I'd rather have it scratched than carved.

I don't see why anyone would see this as anything other than a nut doing a robbery. I don't even see why it would appear on a political blog site. I guess just because the story has an anti-McCain person involved in it?

Other than sympathizing with the woman, why am I to care about this?

Because in reality, incidents like this play exactly into the stereotypes of millions of white voters towards black people. Its stupid to even connect it to Obama's campaign but that's the reality of how people think & generalize.

Re: Drudge Shocker

Based on the report the robber returned and punched and kicked her and scratched a B solely based on her McCain bumper sticker. Unacceptable!

The fact this is an afterthought to a non-politically motivated mugging IS relevant, but this still needs to be addressed.

Until I learn more I'm still skeptical about this story. It's just a little too convenient. Feeds too many gooper boogyman narratives and my bullshitometer is fluctuating.

Re: I hope this does not get exploited

I would not be surprised if GOP operatives are already in touch with this woman. This is a perfect incident to showcase specifically for whites who are still apprehensive about voting for Obama because of their negative views towards Blacks in general.

I hope they have the decency to not exploit this. But knowing how these people operate, they will turn this into a national headline.

Either way. This is not good at all.

At the end of the day. It may not affect Obama's standing or it can also hurt him. These type of incidents bring-up serious concerns among white seniors & working class white voters who have some racial inssues.

Oh, phooey! People are way overreacting. I can't see one single thing in this story to ever again think about. What does B stand for anyway??? An O, then maybe we have a small story, but even then it's a robber, not some Obama staffer, or volunteer or anything at all. Sheesh!

by veggiemuffin 2008-10-23 01:01PM | 0 recs
It is horrible if it's true. But...

this incident has all of the stereotype baggage associated with it. A big black guy (6'4" (how is the height so accurate), dark skinned, 200 lbs (again how did the weight got so accurately measured?))  beating and robbing a young (white? not said but is it implied?) woman.

http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news /17789356/detail.html

On top of that, coming back after seeing the McCain/Palin sticker (another report claims she is McCain staffer from Texas), scratching out a "B" letter on her face is very gruesome...why did she refuse medical treatment?

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08297/922 320-100.stm

Until the investigation is complete, please forgive me for being circumspect. I had seen Susan Smith happen before...

But again, if it is a true case, this is really horrible, and my utmost sympathies lie fully with the victim. She surely doesn't deserve this type of horrible attack, no matter what. Hopefully the criminal will be caught and convicted accordingly.

by louisprandtl 2008-10-23 01:02PM | 0 recs
Re: It is horrible if it's true. But...

I would like to know what the police officer reported exactly. Did he/she report a "B" knife wound to her face?

Did the officer say "Don't worry about medical treatment. Don't worry about hepatitis. Don't worry about AIDS."

Did the officer just say "Sorry about the money"?

Did the officer go back to his Police Station and say "Nothing to see here. Just a 20 year old female brutally attacked and robbed. Probably unconscience .... She had her face all knifed up ... I sent her home."

Smells like BS to this native

I used to live about 2 miles from the area in question. It's a working-class white neighborhood, and the bank referred to is on the main drag. Lots of traffic, although not so much on Wed night.

I'm having a hard time picturing a 6'4" black man robbing, arguing with, and scratching a white woman with no witnesses at all. Actually, I'd expect him to get challenged by passersby.

And all this happens just out of camera range? No names?

As cities go

It's safe and clean, and the people are pleasant. Ironic to say "safe" in this thread, but it is. The are is scenic, everywhere is a cliff, or a wall, or a river, or a vista. Flat land is rare.

What it's not is cosmopolitan, in any way. They pretty much roll up the downtown streets by 7:30pm. There are pockets of night life scattered around the general area, but no real hub (as in Philly, for example).

I think it's one of those age-check cities - if you're "done" with partying it's a great place to be. A bit backwards.

It's been linked to google now

http://cbs4.com/campaign08/mccain.volunt eer.mutilated.2.847448.html

Palin has talked to her already.

And the Obama campaign has already commented:

Meanwhile, late this afternooon, the Obama-Biden campaign released a statement, saying: "This is a horrendous act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

Sorry, this STILL sounds somehow phony to me, hopefully they have a video and catch who ever did this, because you know this is going to be the lead Faux news story for the rest of the week.

Otherwise let the cops sort it out, if this lady was mugged at an ATM there has to be some kind of video, don't they have cameras in every ATM that are activated when someone inserts a card.

I am going to be skeptical because the McPalin campaign is full of crazies who still deny they are shouting out racial epithets.

The B is backwards.   It looks like me like she did this to herself in some sort of bizarre cry for attention.

If she was attacked, it is terrible.

But, if this were a Democrat who was attacked and had a big P on them and the P was backwards, you know that FOX would immediately be calling this a left-wing conspiracy.

but how can you NOT be skeptical? What classic Willie Hortonesque element does this lack? 6'4" NFL types who can scratch a "B" visibly, but without breaking skin?

Re: It is a horrible crime

Well, they released a statement. That alone is enough for the time being. If you think Obama can ignore a story like this in Pennsylvania(!!!) and win the election, though, you will be very surprised.

Re: It is a horrible crime

It's either a crime of political violence, or it's a hoax meant to raise racial tensions for a political purpose.

Either way, it's NOT just "a law and order" matter, like an ordinary mugging, it's a political crime with political motivations.

You stupid idiots

These types of things happen EVERY election.
And here we are hand wringing?
Crosses have been burnt.
Confederte flags have been hung.
Crap happens on both sides.
Its is rare for these to be national stories.
It is likely there is something else here.
Stop being stupid alarmists who whine about every thing drudge days.
Good god people.

Drudge is a TABLIOD

Re: You stupid idiots

yes its an aweful story.

But Obama has not inflamed this.  Most outlets won't run with it.  And even if they did, there is NO WAY that Obama touches this story.

instead of reading drudge and refreshing the internet every two minutes waiting for a "breaking news" story go out and work.

I'm a physician and I have seen many knife wounds.

Gun shot wounds.

You name it.

I feel bad for the young woman and I hope she recovers.

That being said...

How did the robber manage to make such a perfect half circle (for the B's? )

No cuts? Any of you guys see cuts on her face related to the B?

Isn't an O easier to write?

Did the robber use a plastic knife?

She refused medical attention. Why?  I mean, if you're getting a B carved in your face don't you want medical attention?

Not even a tetanus shot?

So many holes in this story.

So many holes.

I won't say it's a hoax. I'm sure she got mugged and beat up.

It' the B which looks out of place in all the picture.

Such a violent person (the mugger) would be as delicate as he was in writing that B? Really?  Was he not enraged?

Doesn't make sense.

Re: I'm a physician and

Good points. Plus being a "backwards B", we would have to assume that the attacker, if not dyslexic, had her lie, without struggling, as he neatly carved in a B from a position above her head.

Theft is a fast crime and intense crime. There is no looking around to see what bumper stickers are displayed... and risking arrest and taking the time to carve in a perfect B  ... doesn't add up to me.

And the police officer doesn't take a more detailed report ... doesn't encourage medical assistance? No one is worried about AIDS or hepatitis.

Re: Drudge Shocker

You know who did this?  All those elite, pointy-headed, arugula-eating, latte-drinking, urban muggers supporting Obama.  That's who.

Re: Drudge Shocker

It's a hoax.

Why else would there be a backwards B?  Resident GOP shill karajan's scenario of the mugger holding the woman 69 style, which would put her head somehwere below his feet, and managing to make a perfect, YET BACKWARDS, B, all without breaking the skin is ludicrous.

The Obama campaign has to say what they have to say, because "crazy woman probably did it to herself" isn't exactly good PR, but tell me how on earth you get a delicately scratched, backwards B?

I'm reminded of To Kill a Mockingbird.

B is for Bill Orally

what about that?

MyDD is going to be loofah boy's next target b/c of the black humor expressed here.

But, c'mon, a backwards "B"?  You have to ask, and once again, What's the fucking connection?

Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

Re: Drudge Shocker

Gee, since Obama's black did the story also say that they put a black panther glove on the victim?

Drudge is....drudge (pond scum)

Re: Black Panther Glove

Yeah, then the attacker pulled out an Obama bumper sticker to put over the McCain one.

....damn. I don't mean to sound heartless .. or victim blaming ... but this story just doesn't add up. She will be thoroughly discredited within 2 days.

Michelle Malkin: This is likely horseshit.

"'Throughout my career, I"ve covered dozens of fake hate crimes " campus hate crime hoaxes, Muslim hate crime hoaxes, fake noose hangings, etc., etc., etc. Most were perpetrated by liberals, but there have been some shameful ones on our side of the aisle as well.

I"ve reported on the great lengths that warped attention-seekers have gone to in perpetrating fake hate crimes, including beating themselves up, carving swastikas on their dorm room doors and walls, locking themselves in bathroom stalls, and burning down their own houses.

Which is why I"m not jumping up and down with outrage over Drudge-promoted story of a McCain volunteer claiming to have been attacked by a black man whom she accused of carving a "B" in her face after spotting her McCain bumper sticker.

She refused medical treatment after reporting the incident to police. Why on earth would she do that?

Look at her face.
What"s wrong with the "B?"

You can read it on her website.  Also, Hotair is treating it as "let's not all high-five each other over this because we may end up with egg on our faces".

Let's say it all together now:

I have to agree with Michelle Malkin?

Does that mean I have to kill myself or something?

by WashStateBlue 2008-10-23 03:39PM | 0 recs
Re: Wait....

You don't have to kill yourself, per se.  Maybe just lock yourself up in a concentration camp for a few years.

Politically Motivated" Mutilation - Real or Hoax?
Posted Oct 23rd 2008 6:50PM by TMZ Staff

Pittsburgh law enforcement sources tell TMZ they have serious questions about the authenticity of the alleged victim who says she had her face cut by a politically-motivated attacker.

We're told there are several things about the alleged attack that don't add up. A Pittsburgh PD official says they are conducting a "thorough investigation" and have not determined if the alleged attack is real or a hoax. But we're told there is definitely a level of skepticism.....

Re: looks like it is already breaking down

...and to top it all off. What 20 year old in a new city gets mugged, beat up, and CUT up , then decides to go to friends house -then decides to drive back to the crime scene to call the police?

Re: Drudge Shocker

I don't know if this has been brought up by previous posters, but according to her twitter page she was looking for a BoA ATM for 2-3 hours (ostensibly to avoid the $2 fee).  That's barely plausible.  But who announces on their twitter page that they're in search of an ATM?  That's on par with twittering every time you go to the bathroom (w/ maybe a follow up about what happened).  Can I bet on intrade that this is a hoax?

For a chuckle

Go to the comment page after the article:

http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news /17789356/detail.html

Seems we have a lot of Jr. Grissoms out there, kind of like our own resident GOP apologist Karajan, it's clear to these CSI experts that the perp was holding her head down, hence the backwards B?

Funny, no one mentioned about the fact the skins not even punctured or the fact she refused medical attention?  See a doctor?  Why, when you have to rush back to your twitter and MySpace Page?

Re: For a chuckle

Not sure how you can hold somebody down by being over her head instead of on top of her rightside up.

Well, the wingnuts had their fake outrage

now let's start our own fake outrage. I'll start:

THIS IS UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE!!!! She is a hire member of the MCCAIN CAMPAIGN!!!! I demand that McCain come out immediately and apologize for the actions of HIS campaign.  The Republicans will do ANYTHING to win!

by Cleveland John 2008-10-23 04:49PM | 0 recs
Re: Drudge Shocker

Well I have never seen FAKER black eyes in my life.

They look like makeup to me.

Why no other contusions?  No broken veins in her eye?  Wouldn't they be all red and swollen? Did the mugger slug her perfectly square in the eye?  Did she not fight back?

Fake, fake, fake.

by wblynch 2008-10-23 10:49PM | 0 recs
She admits it was a hoax

Here we have it. She made it all up.

http://kdka.com/local/attack.McCain.Bloo mfield.2.847628.html

Now, let's start some righteous fake outrage against McCain.

by Cleveland John 2008-10-24 09:54AM | 0 recs
Drudge needs to go down

OK, If you needed any more proof that Drudge is a racist, this is it.   This stunt was about as racist as you can get.     Young White woman from Texas gets mugged by Mean Angry Black man in the big city.   He 'mutilates' her because she will not vote for the Black candidate.

As much as I hate to, I have to give props to Michelle Malkin for immediately seeing through this hoax.   As looney as she is, she didn't fall for this racist trick.

I hope all the fence sitters finally realize what kind of campaign that McCain has run and the kind of people who want him as president.
