The Republican Debate

Brief comments:

Mitt Romney was clearly the most poised and articulate. (and his hair is almost Reaganesque). McCain was the most energized and passionate. Giuliani seemed to wander around with his comments, especially on abortion. But the top three remained the top three.

Mike Huckabee gave thoughtful responses - but he doesn't believe in evolution? Ron Paul was far removed from the others. And Tom Tancredo gets the wingnut prize for calling for repeal of the 16th Amendment.

So, was McCain a bit over the top? Did Giuliani too often hark back to 9/11? And is Romney too smooth by half?

Maybe the real winner is Fred Thompson

My take

Romney: Waaaay to slick and polished.  Looks almost like he came from central casting.   But he did seem the most in command of his answers.

McCain: He looks nuts.   That smile he cracked after his "gates of hell" comment is telling -- he is insane.  That being said he gave all the right answers for a GOP crowd.

Gilmore: If I didn't disagree with the guy on dozens and dozens of issues I could see myself voting for him.  He came off well in my opinion.

Brownback:  Not a kook.  I was surprised.  He came off better than I thought.

Rudy:  I can't believe two of his answers are not getting more play.   Abortion is best left with the courts?  The Shaivo thing was best left with the courts?   I can't imagine these answers excited the base a bit.   Rudy's biggest problem is that besides Paul, he looked the least Presidential.  He looked like a mayor.

Re: My take

Rudy dogged the questions pretty bad.  "Let someone else decide... I'd ONLY be the PRESIDENT."  That's the kind of president I want.  Someone who lets other people decide.  But hey, that's Rudy's "Great Leadership" he brings to the table.
