He must have worked his butt off last year. The bad thing is right now we are in the same pattern as France in 1940--Phony War--they got convinced every thing was going to be OK but then got totally over run in a few months.

I'm thinking that we are in an economic lull right now. This situation is very abnormal for the USA. In every other recession since 1900, we have had the world's largest manufacturing and production capacity to pull us out once liquidity returned (usually after 18 months). The exception is 1934-1941--the economy never returned. I agree with the author of the piece--the Fed should be scared silly over the prospect that we are going to have a major deflation: i.e real estate (still going downhill--commercial real estate is just now going south), farms, any kind of leveraged asset is going down hill still, AND WORST OF ALL EMPLOYMENT AND WAGES ARE REALLY CRASHING. The stock market has a "little bubble". But consider this (I figure Bernanke knows this)--the USA is in the same stage of the crisis that we were in in 1933. THAT MEANS PEOPLE that we have 8 more years for this thing to run its course......its SCARY....

Maybe we are lucky--at least Greenspan wasn't resurrected....

If I'm reading this correctly Mr. Singer, its your view that this ruling will likely/eventually allow foreigner i.e. Rubert Murdoch owner of Dem bashing Fox News/News Corporation to utilize this ruling to directly intervene in the US political world/process.

My view is that it could be a very scary situation where even the Chinese government acting thru its many state owned front corporations, the Roman Catholic Church, Russian/Saudia owned and other petro-countries such as Venezuela, and Islamic terror friendly organizations can now get very good access to our political process. This Roberts Court is very activist/super conservative. My research on these 5 Justices never shed light their radicalized views. Nothing in their past pointed to how anti-individual and anti-Constitution these mostly Bush appointees would be in making such a decision. This is the biggest decision since Roe v. Wade (women's freedow) and Brown v. Board of Education (desegration). Remember when Roberts during his confirmation emphatically declared that he was a strict constructionalist of Constitution issues. I must ask this: "Where in 1781 did the Founding Fathers put any article in the Constitution which gave full Bill of Rights and Civil Liberties to Corporations (they are administrative creations of the State Legislatures). This ruling has suddenly put an artificial being to rule over live human US Citizens.  Was this what James Cameron was telling us about Skynet in Terminator--machines to Lord over humans--now its any group of investors anywhere on the planet who want to put a solid waste dump next to your home.....

Unless Obama teams up with Pelosi and Reid to push thru a law to block the effect of this ruling, I think that the Democratic / Progressive movement is domed. But more importantly almost every thing you can think of i.e. education, police, fire, highways, food/drug purity, internet, taxes, defense contracts, etc. can now be challenged and directed by secretive boards of directors whose faceless beings operate beyond the control of voters.

Justice Roberts and his merry men have really placed a powerful tool in the hands of the 1% globalists.....are we the next China, United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico?

I agree with all those who are wondering "how in the world did Obama get a job teaching Constitutional Law"? Huh? Whose constitution did he teach. When I studied constitutional law in college, we can to believe that over the last 120 years, the powers in the constitution were gravitating to the Presidency. The Congress is too busy getting money from lobbyist and corporate / rich donors for their offshore bank accounts so they have continually ceded power to the President. Then along comes Obama and POOF -- he goes hat in hand to the Congress like a lap dog. He lets these overpaid banker clods run all over him, he gives the Republicans more air time than they get on Fox Network.......Its incredible!!!!I can't figure him out--was he only in the campaign because he liked that? Was even he surprised that he won? Does he want to get the hell out of that job -- too hard--long hours? Or does he just like riding in a big limo and flying all over in AF One.

This guy is such a WHIMP--I just hope no foreign power decides to give us a showdown i.e. Russians over missiles in Cuba in 1962....this guy would just cave in and run off to Cheynne Mountain...

Neglect by Obama doomed it from the start. I'm actually respectful of Pelosi of how she handily moved it thru the House only to see Obama and Reid pussyfoot around with the huge HC Lobby milking them for millions of dollars in money for future campaigns. Obama is a great campaigner/speaker/lecturer. But he is either an awful/naive or ???? political strategist.

Here are some of his biggest blunders:

    1. Shortly after the Nov 2008 elections  Obama went AWOL even though 2 very important Senate seats were still up for grabs i.e. Georgia and Minnesota in runoffs.  Barack simply shut down his election operation which could have been used to turn out the vote in both states. I was working in Georgia in Nov. 08 election and we had a huge voter turnout in the Black districts --- up to 98% of the voters--it was gratifying and it justified our hard work.

But then we appealed to Obama to bring in money and Top Gun politicos to help with the Saxbe Chambliss / Martin election. Chambliss is a total rightwing jerk and could have been beaten. Martin wasn't too hot but he had a chance.

Obama and his team threw us under the bus. Martin lost and the Republicraps got the Senate seat.  Did you know that since Obama didn't care to help out Martin in that Senate election that we only got 20% turnout in the runoff by the black voters. Obama could have turned them out. He shut down and as a result Martin got screwed.  I don't think the Republicraps could have asked for a better choice than Obama--he went from regular guy in tune with the problems of all of us to an elitist who lives in the White House coccoon and rides in limos and flies in AF One around the world.

    2. Many of my friends in the campaign for Obama are like me--fed up with his lackadaisical political work and lack of drive to push out the Republicans. He makes great speeches but doesn't do sh*t to help out with party building. Up to Dec. 2008, we were building in almost every state. Now we are retreating like Napolean from Moscow.

I'm fed up and finished with Obama. I'll work for a serious reform candidate like Hillary (should she run in the 2012 primaries) or Howard Dean if he's in in 2012 but if Obama is the candidate, my fellow Democrats here and me are staying home on election 2012.

Do any of you now really believe that Obama got all his funding thru small internet donations in 2008? The way he sucks up to bank/Wall Streeters, I seriously doubt that now but I did believe it then.

Why should we work so hard for a guy whose biggest accomplishment was staying away and watching the Republicraps take away Ted Kennedy's seat.  He should be ashamed -- not even a word about it has come from the White House. The biggest loser is Obama.....

hey, good point--did you hear that today Citigroup who got $20billion in taxpayer bailout and lost $7 bil. last Quarter is going to give their executives $$$billions in "bonuses" for good job....

I wonder what Ole "Speak softly and I don't care if you hit me with your Stick" Obama will have to say about that....

More and more of my progressive friends think he is going down the same path as Jimmy Carter--one termer.....

We worked so hard to get voters to turn out Democratic in this region in 2006 and 2008 and now he's just flushing all that work down the toiler--I'm not working for him in 2012 if he doesn't start working like a President...i.e. Truman, FDR, LBJ...etc.

  • comment on a post Some Thoughts on Last Night over 4 years ago

Many reasons I say that but mainly:

    1. At this rate, he will still have unemployment level in 2012 of about 7.5% (that's very optimistic I think too).

    2. Obama started day one advocating for people who DID NOT nor EVER WILL vote for him....know an bankers, healthcare CEO's, or auto dealer(s) / employee(s) who voted for him....I have never met one of those people--but he started day one to rescue them.

From day one he started to ignore the working classes.

    3. Know any Republicans that want a black President--why did Obama feel it was so important to play nice to them--Bush and his Republican Congress in 2000 never consulted Democrats on anything.

    4. He's arrogant and egotistical and out of touch with the working class (most are Democrats). Jimmy Carter was somewhat the same. How can Obama run a country where all the jobs, opportunities, etc. continued to be exported to Asia. Where 10% mostly Democratic voters are not employed. All he does is speak in platitudes which are meaningless.

    5. Don't even get me started on his war policies--this is CRAZY--any President who presides over a mindless, endless war in a basketcase no account country will be defeated ala Bush and LBJ.

As for me, I worked hard to get him elected (knocking on doors, poll watching, etc.) but if a good / viable candidate come on in the primaries of 2012, I am working just as hard to oust him...

  • comment on a post A Broken United States Senate over 4 years ago
The Senate is an outgrowth of the composition of the USA in 1780 when many of the founding fathers were from rural southern states. They wanted to maintain some control of the process of government. This was written into the Constitution to do that.
The Senate is a vestage of that era when a message sent from New York to Richmond took 3 to 5 days by horseback.
It's basically very undemocratic to have such a system in this day of instant messaging, facebook, internet, Google, etc.
But I think we are stuck with it....
  • He had a Republican majority in Congress....

  • I strongly disagree. The failure is on Obama's back. His lack of forceful Presidential authority is becoming a real embarrassment. The Republicans now sense that they can run over him--unlike every President that I can remember, he does not use the unwritten authority that is in the Constitution and in the laws written since 1932 i.e. War Powers Act and Economic Recovery Act(s).  He is well educated but he doesn't use his knowledge/Presidential authority to deal with Congress.....

  • You are right. When/if the insurance industry, the Republicraps and their lobbyists win they will feel empowered and that will be the end of Healthcare reform forever. An example remember the basically Democrat campaign in the 1960's thru 1990's to implement gun control -- based on the assassination of JFK and the attempt on Reagan. Democrats got hammered so badly and lost so many Congress seats that no Democrat will ever again go after the gun lobby. The Healthcare lobby is determined to make this happen again to their business so that no politican will ever introduce any HCR again......this is it and it now looks like Obama has screwed up the chances for good--his milktoast personality is so lacking Presidential authority that he won't get any major law passed -- the Republicraps know they can beat him down....he is really a weak leader...

  • comment on a post MoveOn.Org should hold Obama accountable over 4 years ago
Obama is to blame for the HCR Act crashing down on all of us. He is an extremely effective campaigner  but he is an ineffective political leader. How long must one serve in the Senate to learn its rules and procedures?
Obama was there for 4 years and yet he acts as though the problems of the HCR Act, the Banking Regulation Act, etc are having are a surprise to him, Gibbs, Axelrod, and Rahm. I work in IT and engineering. I'm normally given a few days or at the outside a month to learn about projects and the technologies we will need to use to accomplish them.
Obama who was in the Senate for 4 years acts  as though he has never been on Capital Hill.
I keep reading that the procedural moves that the Republicans are using to stop his legislation are one big surprise after another. Just yesterday, Republican Quackjob Sen. Imhoff of the backwater state of Oklahoma, used a Senate procedure to derail an liberal effort to push ahead with the Public option. The Obama gang at the Whitehouse were just totally outmanuveured by this and many other good tactics by the Republicans.
No matter where Moveon.org wants to place the blame, this is Obama's defeatin 2012 in the making.
As a REAL DEMOCRAT PRESIDENT once said (Harry Truman)
"The Buck Stops Here".  Obama should read David MacCullough's biography about Truman--maybe then Obama will stop being a Republican Light and Mr. Steppinfetchit, and become an asskicking great President like Truman, LBJ, Clinton, and FDR.
Do you really think that LBJ could have gotten hundreds of laws passed including Medicare and Civil Rights without taking the Congress into the woodshed. LBJ knew how to manage Congress--they didn't manage him.....

It's been just one year of Obama not doing anything substantive---I'm already bored out of my mind with his "not ready for prime-time Presidency".
My message is to Dr. Howard Dean:  Please get ready to run in 2012 primaries--WE NEED YOU BADLY....
  • comment on a post The Mother of All Tax Breaks over 4 years ago
Can you believe that Obama is such a MILKTOAST namby pamby President. Come on Barack don't you even have a pair.
Two days ago these FATCAT BANKERS failed to even come to the White House and by rejecting your invitation they ran all over you and the Presidency. A strong President with some brass ones would have told those guys--"Since you  aren't here because of the weather and flying conditions --- AS PRESIDENT I AM SENDING YOU MY AIRPLANES---THEY FLY IN ALL WEATHER. At that point he should have dispatched a platoon of Marines in Full BATTLEGEAR to go and get these OVERPAIND INSOLENT BANKING CEO PRICKS. The Marines could have landed ontop of the Banks where these CEO's were holed up in their executive suites. Obama should have had them  enter those fine woodpaneled CEO/EXECUTIVE offices by knocking down the doors just like in Iraq. Then the Marines would get these jerks by the neck and throw them in one of our $100 million "all weather flying helios" and fly them straight to the White House in handcuffs for all the press to see. Instead Obama has them on a freaking conference call like a WOOSE
I cannot believe what a weak President he is--Congress, the Bankers, etc. all run all over him and he only sez "CAN I HAVE ANOTHER SWAT ON BY BUTT---PLEASE KIND SIRS!!!!"
Until Obama starts acting like a real Harry Truman / Ike / LBJ / Reagan / even Bush, he will continue to get NO WHERE WITH THESE GUYS.
