I am very Proud of our Massachusetts Legislature and all those involved in the Massachusetts Marriage Equality movement. A similar ballot initiative was put forward after the Supreme Judicial Court decision to allow same sex marriage.
Those opposed to gay marriage were well organized and very vocal. But so were those of us in support of gay marriage. In massachusetts, for a citizen initiated ballot petition to make it to the voting booth, It must first pass 2 "constitutional conventions" of the entire state Legislature. It barely passed the first Con Com. But activists got to work and people stepped to the plate to unseat legislators who voted against gay marriage by finding good candidates to oppose them in their district. By the time it came around to the second Con Com, gay marriage had been the law of the land for a few years and many anti-gay legislators were voted out of office. The other major change was in public polling. People realized that allowing gay marriage did not cause the sky to fall or threaten "traditional marriage". It failed miserably at the second Con Com and all the Family values groups folded tent and went away with their tails between their legs. It was quite a turbulent time.
There was a rift in the Gay community. There were those that said"full marriage" or nothing. There were those who were afraid to go for the whole Enchillada and perhaps we shouldn't ruffle feathers and just try for "Civil Union". I'm gald the incrementalists lost out. The federal Government knows what a marriage is and has laws in place. The federal Government does NOT know what a civil union is.
Matthews and Olbermann are PUNDITS who are paid to have Opinions. We may disagree with them, but that is what they are paid for. Neither of them would be appropriate choices for moderator of MTP where the host is supposed to be neutral and NOT reveal his opinion on the issues. Brokaw however is an old fashioned NEWSMAN, who keeps his Opinions to himself and is more concerned that the "issues" get a fair airing. He's is a natural for MTP. I've been watching him for eons and don't know if he leans left or right, which makes him a natural for a show like MTP>
I agree, traffic at MyDD has drastically dropped as evidenced by the small amount of new diaries. However, traffic at DailyKos has NOT dropped one bit.....New diaries are constantly being posted, not only about Obama/Mccain, but on many other issues of importance to Progressive Democrats
