Fmr DNC Chair Don Fowler on Dean's Ouster: "Nonsense"

On Tuesday, former DNC Chairman Don Fowler (1995-96) sent an email to many national Democratic Party leaders and several DNC members in response to calls for Howard Dean to be replaced. Here's what it said:

From: Don Fowler

Subject: Dean should stay as Chair

Some ill-advised voices have suggested that, because of his 50-state strategy, Governor Dean should be replaced as Chair of the DNC.

This is nonsense.  The 50-state strategy is exactly what the Democratic Party needed and continues to need.  Why do the Washington people think that they have a special prerogative to dictate what the Democratic Party needs?

I hope that all DNC members will join me in rejecting this foolishness--from whatever source it came.

Democrats won a great victory on November 7--control of the United States House of Representatives, control of the United States Senate, majority of Governors, and majority of state legislative bodies.  Why should anyone want to mess with the team that won these remarkable results?

Governor Dean deserves to continue as DNC Chair.

Re: Fmr DNC Chair Don Fowler on Dean's Ouster

The record speaks for itself. Democrats were competitive across the country.  Montana turned the Senate, the margin in Wyoming is razor thin, Idaho is back in play, and in places like North Carolina and Tennessee, Democrats ran the most inspired races in decades.

What states did Carville and Whouley want to surrender?  Alaska?  Louisiana? Massachusetts?  The attacks on Dean should stop.  And the accomplishments of 06 should be acknowledged.

Whoa, do not talk about Michael Whouley like that.  I did not like the way Emmanuel was so openly critical of Gov. Dean, but the DCCC was very helpful in my state.  Whouley wants to elect Democrats, and he is good at it.

Don Fowler on Dean's Ouster: "No

The DCCC elected only 8 of it's original 22 candidates.  Thank Goodness there were other candidates out there running on grassroots power or we never would have taken the congress much less the senate.

Thank Goodness for All Those Great Candidates!
Yep, without the people-powered progressive candidates like Carol Shea-Porter, John Hall, Dave Loebsack, Jerry McNerney, and others, we wouldn't even be talking about "Speaker Pelosi". Some of these candidates didn't get DCCC help until the VERY last minute... And some got no help at all (like Shea-Porter)! Perhaps this sholuld be a lesson for all of us:
Positive people-powered campaigns work.
Uber-expensive, consultant-driven campaigns can only take us so far.

Nice Going, Don Fowler!

It's funny that Dean's opponents never mention the money that withheld from the election by candidates with safe seats. This whole attack on Dean is an attempt to reassert control of the party by the Democratic Beltway Insider Bunch.
