Accountability Now

I'm excited to let you know that 21st Century Democrats is teaming up with MoveOn, Democracy for America, DailyKos,, SEIU, and BlogPAC to support the new Accountability Now PAC.

Accountability Now is a grassroots effort to hold elected officials accountable for whose interests they're really promoting in DC. Working together, we're going to challenge the Washington power structures that have made it too easy for Congress to hand out cash to corporate America while we, the people they were elected to represent, are losing our jobs, our health care, and our basic constitutional rights.

To achieve that goal, we're going to be keeping track of whose interests members of Congress are really representing, and supporting primary challengers across the country to hold incumbents accountable for voting with corporate interests instead of with their constituents' interests.  We have seen these efforts successfully employed in 2007, when grassroots activists joined together to oust Al Wynn out of office, and in 2006, when Congresswoman Jane Harman of California was put on notice by a tough primary challenge and recommitted to being responsive to her constituents.

21st Century Democrats had a fantastic year in 2008.  We trained more than 650 organizers, knocked on 800,000 doors, and contacted more than 317,000 voters in 32 states.  Our efforts helped elect 53 Democrats across the country last year. But that was last year. If we're going to make possible the promise of November's historic elections, we're going to have to step it up even more, because the Republicans have made clear that they're not going to go down without a fight.

Right now, 21st Century Democrats is in the process of evaluating the candidates running in this year's elections, and getting ready to help elect even more progressive Democrats.

We look forward to supporting Accountability Now and helping elect progressive candidates in the 2009 and 2010 races to continue building on last year's successes.  Together, we can create the political space needed to give President Obama the support he needs to make the progressive changes we elected him for.

Such issues as ending the war in Iraq, creating sustainable jobs, ensuring access to affordable health care, restoring our constitutional liberties, and ending torture - all of these require us to stand up and make sure our elected officials know they are beholden to one group of people and only one group of people, - we, the people.

I hope you'll join us.

Responsibility Now

I'd like to see an organization or effort aimed more at Pres. Obama's call for responsibility, including personal responsibility.

Guess that's fairly inclusive, but what kind of ideas are out there to implement this kind of change.
