Michelle Obama : Scoffs at $600.00 for middle class and poor

It seems Michelle Obama has her own twist regarding those whose income is low enough to qualify for the $600 government's so-called stimulus tax relief package. Criticizing the short term advantage to an audience of mostly African-American women in Michigan she stated, "What can you do with that? Not to be ungrateful or anything. But maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn't pay down every bill every month."

It would have been wise for her to have stopped right there. But she added, "And it may even feel good that first month when you get that check. And then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings."

Lackluster performance Coke, I'm dissapointed.

Wow, this gem today, and this one yesterday:

http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/7/10/1765 9/8288

Really, Chance, if you want to be a top-notch troll, you have to pick up the pace?

You're not cutting the mustard. This is lackluster performance at best.

Ask Susan and Larry. At least 2 diaries a day and a lot of fly by turd-dropping comments.

WashStateBlue, do you know whether this diarist ever uses links to legitimize the point?

I'll take

$600.00 again if they want to hand it out.

Weird thing is that--- did Barack not say he had $1000.00 additional stimulus package for us when he is President?

by roxfoxy 2008-07-11 02:37PM | 0 recs
He's trying to ram through

a $50 million second stimulus package this year apparently.  I think that's the next Congressional showdown; he's been challenging McCain to sign on as a co-sponsor with him I believe.  He'll need some crossovers, which he may get from Coleman, Smith, and Collins because some of our own will certainly balk at the second stimulus package.

Re: He's trying to ram through

You mean 50 Billion? because 50 million is not going to help but Alaska perhaps.

by roxfoxy 2008-07-11 02:48PM | 0 recs
Re: He's trying to ram through

Yup, that's what I meant.  It wouldn't survive a McConnell filibuster but Obama may actually be hoping for one on that bill so he can use it against the pubs.

Re: Michelle Obama : Scoffs at $600.00 for middle

your point being?

Re: Michelle Obama : Scoffs at $600.00 for middle

I can't speak for the diarist but maybe the point is why disregard a $600.00 stimulus package that was sent to us when

1. Your husband is pitching a similar stimulus package

2. Although the larger point she might be making is we need to have more than just a stimulus packages. One highly doubts that the median income for middle and lower middle class is going to see riches under a democratic or republican president in the next 4 years. Riches being--- to a point where people won't welcome another stimulus check.

Re: Michelle Obama : Scoffs at $600.00 for middle

Um.  Seriously.  Wake up.

If the complaint (not necessarily mine) was that the checks were too small then the solution is obviously to send more money.  I don't think it's a great idea, but seriously:

That's what you do if you think it was inadequate.  You enlarge it.

I've got yer stimilus package... RIGHT HERE!

Man, what's up with all the potty talk you guys?  Clean it up for once!

If that were the point

that might make sense, but the diarist had no problem with the sentiment...up to the earring comment.

Re: If that were the point

Maybe Michelle meant that $600.00 is so little to her that it is meaningless - just buy herself a pair of earrings. If so, the remark is truly disgusting. I guess she has never gone to a food bank to feed her kids.

Re: If that were the point

Here is another tasty post from this new NoQuarter refugee:

" Re: I don't really hate Obama (1.00 / 1)

And, the fact that he is unqualified, untested, say-anything-to-get-elected, untrustworthy twit.....

by Marjoriest on Fri Jul 11, 2008 at 01:41:21 AM EST "

And so he/she goes on, in post after post.

Some much hate. so little style.

by WashStateBlue 2008-07-11 05:33PM | 0 recs

It's the hate-to-style ratio that gets so old. I actually thought the "Unity Kit" was funny, but that was not the normal bitter hyperbolic NQ screed.

This is why we love Engels.

He is SO damn funny, even when I want to rip his eyeballs out, I am happy to see his posts.

Re: If that were the point

Thanks, WSB..... I am just a bitter old woman. Style? I can't afford it - or $600.00 earrings.

Re: If that were the point

Are you suggesting that envy is part of your hate?  I understand the hatred of Barack - to a point, but the thing with Michelle I never quite got.  My god do they hate her.

I'd guess many of us haven't

I'm sitting here paying 75$ a month for cable access, typing on a $1200 computer. I know everyone posting here at least HAS a computer, so the "food bank" outrage comes off as a little faux. "Disgust" is just a bizarre term.

However, I'd agree that $600 is a huge amount to the very low income families you describe.

Re: I'd guess many of us haven't
IF.... you had to go to a foodbank to feed your kids and Michelle is talking about buying earring with the pittance the government sent - yes, disgusting.
Not me, dearies. But I do have some empathy.

Re: I'd guess many of us haven't

AND, people who have the internet and a computer are still having a dreadful time. Elitism is not a good trait.

by Marjoriest 2008-07-11 06:05PM | 0 recs
Of course not you

That went without saying.

It's also your right to think of women with $600 jewelry as "disgusting". When that woman is the daughter of a city employee and a secretary, who works her way through Princeton and Harvard, I like to think of them as "an example". I suppose it comes down to what you value.

We can agree to disagree.

How about a truce on wives?

Re: Michelle Obama

Is there a link to this comment or is it made up?

I agree political spouses should be off limits except when they are on the stump speaking for the candidate.  Then, whatever they say is fair game.  Stay away from personal attacks on looks, clothing, child rearing techniques.  But if they are going to talk policy or political opinion we are supposed to ignore it?  Why, because they are women?

by JustJennifer 2008-07-11 03:15PM | 0 recs
Re: Michelle Obama

"But if they are going to talk policy or political opinion we are supposed to ignore it?  Why, because they are women?"

Not to start a flame, but did you feel that way about Chelsea?

She was declared off-limits by the campaign, and it was strongly defended around here?

by WashStateBlue 2008-07-11 03:18PM | 0 recs
Re: Michelle Obama

She was declared off limits on a personal level.  If people wanted to discuss the comments she was making on the stump about her mom's policies then sure why not?  If people wanted to discuss whether or not she was being pimped out or how she felt about the Monica situation then yes that is out of line.

by JustJennifer 2008-07-11 10:27PM | 0 recs
On policy yeah

hell yeah, go after her.

But earrings? That's a character slam, which should only apply to the candidates. Michelle isn't running for Pres.

by Neef 2008-07-11 04:12PM | 0 recs
To be clear

the criticism that Barack is "elitist", fine. We want a President who fools us into forgetting he's a millonare =)

Michelle is allowed to be "elitist", as are Cindy and Laura. If the earring thing can even be called that.

I couldn't find a video of the earring comment, but I did find a video of the highlights of her speech in Pontiac.

Yup.  She sure seems painfully out of touch. <snark>

Another notwentfivecents(for those unable to count twentyfive cents is a quarter) loser diary...
What happened to that Michelle "whitey" video?
..damn if that had only worked out for you all..

It is clear that this person was never a Hillary supporter. Just another racist who will be really pissed when the dark skinned Obama replaces Bush in our schools and government buildings....

This is DUMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give me a damned break.  You're going to insinuate that Michelle Obama who grew up in a working class family is the one without a sense of what it's like to live in the real world?  REALLY??????

Cindy McCain has never had to work for a damned thing in her life and can't even be bothered to make sure that her property taxes are paid on her many houses.

From now on I am going to recommend every diary that's roots don't lie in the "Nobama" idiots wandering around the internet trying to stir up trouble.

suggestion for the diarist

If you don't like Obama (and believe me, I am not crazy about him either), why don't you do something constructive and get involved in a down-ticket race?

I don't see the purpose of this kind of diary.

Anyway, there's not enough analysis here to qualify for a diary, in my opinion. Put a comment like this in an open thread or a different Obama thread.

Oh, there's a reason for it. Diaries like this make an entryway for an invasion of the haters from nosense and ihatebarack.com Just take a look at the wreck list for this diary.
