Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

Chelsea Clinton deserves great credit for showing other, supposedly more "professional" politicians how to deal with the media. Her first badge of honor is the obvious realization that she takes questions UNFILTERED from the audience. we saw definite proof of this when she was asked a very inappropriate question at a news conference. most politicians or surrogates would never have faced this type of question at a rally, because they so heavily screen campaign events. so kudos number 1 for her openness.

But the main kudos go to her for her PERFECT answer in response to a foolish question about her mother's experience in dealing with the Lewinsky scandal and what Chelsea felt that showed about her strength. Chelsea's answer:
THAT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!

Bingo! we have a winner. perfect answer to a stupid and personal question. i hope all politicians were watching, and taking notes. think how much better off we'd be if more politicians gave this answer and stuck to it when asked ridiculous personal questions. if her dad had said "that's none of your business" instead of "i did not have sexual relations with..." he would have been much better off. instead of being impeached for lying under oath (an actual crime, no matter how stupid the question you're lying about) the ReThugs would have had to try to impeach him for not answering a stupid personal question. they still would have tried, but would have looked even stupider than they did. and he wouldn't have openly lied to the entire country.

so, note to politicians, there is one proper answer to personal questions, Chelsea Clinton just gave it to you:
THAT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!

Great going young Ms. Clinton!

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

I think you're right that it was not an appropriate question for Chelsea.

However, I don't think the issue or those sorts of questions should be off the table. The country had to deal with it for quite awhile.  We had to explain to our children what oral sex is and what impeachment is -- all because Bill Clinton couldn't control himself and couldn't bear himself to tell the truth as soon as the issue came out.

I have people mentioning it to me in my day to day conversations. Would it be too much to expect Hillary Clinton to address this openly and honestly?

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

Wouldn't it have been great had Bubba followed Chelseas lead and told the MSM media and the GOP Congress and Kenn Starr- His personal relationships with Lewinski is NONE of Your Business instead of lying to the public and stonewalling.

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

Given that he faced a subpoena, he couldn't have done that.

ignoring subpoena or lying under oath?

"Given that he faced a subpoena, he couldn't have done that."

i'd say he'd have gotten more credit from the public and less legal trouble for ignoring a subpoena about personal sexual conduct than he would have about lying under oath.

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

He could have taken the fifth. I'd like to see any judge hold a sitting President in Contempt of Court for refusing to answer a personal question in front of a grand jury.

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

Not to mention, the guy who asked it insists that he was actually a Clinton supporter who was attempting to give Chelsea a softball question to show her mother's strength:

The college student who got a stinging brushback from Chelsea Clinton when he asked about the Monica Lewinsky scandal said Wednesday he's a Clinton supporter who was trying to get her to show 'what makes Hillary so strong.'

"Evan Strange, a Butler University student who works on the school's newspaper, The Butler Collegian, said he had asked Chelsea Clinton her opinion "on the criticism of her mother that how she handled the Lewinsky scandal might be a sign of weakness and she might not be a strong enough candidate to be president."

"I'm a supporter of Hillary. I love Hillary," Strange said Wednesday on CBS' "The Early Show." ... He said that by brushing him off, Chelsea Clinton missed an opportunity to show her mother's strength.

Why do I do not exactly believe him?

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

I don't know why. Don't you think that this would demonstrate her strength?

People benefit enormously by taking issues head on, as Obama did with Wright.

I think Clinton would have benefited had she talked about this openly and honestly early in the campaign. People have lots of good will toward her over this and it would have prompted a lot of support. She would have earned credit for being so direct.

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

I don't believe him because the phrasing of the question doesn't seem to fit his explanation. I am only guessing, and it is entirely possible that I'm flat-out wrong, but I feel like the guy meant to ask a "controversial" question just to stir up some trouble, and then went around to the media doing the "Who me?" routine when Chelsea got pissed.

And I think it's a delicate issue that Hillary would prefer that only she answer. It's kind of like Wright--even if you're praising Wright for his 30 years service, you're still talking about Wright. If I'm running the Clinton campaign, there's no way in hell I want to delve back into that mess. Being portrayed as the cuckolded wife is embarrassing and degrading, and obviously doesn't square with the image of a presidential contender.

I know she talked about it on Oprah, but she hasn't really talked about it anywhere else, so I'd think it's off-limits except under certain circumstances.

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

Comments like these convince me half the Obama supporters are Republican trolls.

"The country had to deal with it for quite awhile," note the passive voice. Bill and Hillary Clinton had to deal with it, and to some extent Chelsea and their close friends. The only reason the country had to deal with it is because the Republicans put it on the table in a last ditch effort to destroy the Democratic party and the Clinton presidency. It was the culmination of years of smears, and all they could come up with was Bill's infidelity.

politicsmatters is no troll. Search his/her comment history and you'll see that he/she really tries to be as fair as possible.

"The country had to deal with it" isn't some kind of code-speak to damn the Clintons. We did have to deal with it, and for exactly the reasons you stated. In other words, we had to deal with the republicans' seizing the incident for sordid political gain.

No one here is implying that the absurdist impeachment trial was a just result. All our nerves are a little raw around here, so I think this is just a misunderstanding.

answer for improper conduct, not personal conduct

i think politicians should have to answer for improper conduct, so since Bill was in the office and with an intern, he may not have been completely qualified to be able to say "none of your business." but if he had we may not have had to discuss oral sex with our children until we wnated to.

but for example, with the NY governor scandals ongoing, the new Gov. shouldn't have had to answer any questions except whether he used office or staff time improperly.

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

Why should Chelsea have to address this?  I don't buy for one minute that the student who asked it is a Hillary supporter.  I saw an interview with him and he was acting like a smarmy little asshole.

Umm...Chelsea DOESN'T deal with the media.  She rudely told some nine year old kid that she "doesn't talk with the press."

Now, her "none of your business" response was good, but as far as dealing with the media, Chelsea's refusal to be accountable for anything she says on the campaign trail is oddly juvenile.  She's an incredibly capable and knowledgeable defender of her mother's policies...why not talk with press?

Re: Chelsea Clinton shows how to do it right!

And speaking of Chelsea, before any Clinton supporter says they'll vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee, please remember he said this:

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno."

I have no doubt he would've made a similar "joke" about Obama's children if Obama had been president at the time.

The man is an ass. Please remember what's at stake for our country.

If she really said it like that I love it! That was really beyond the pale to ask the daughter about this.

Re: Chelsea doen't deal with the media...

Read Fox News site much?

Fox News has had the Chelsea and the nine year old story at the top of their most-read list for a while now, and it isn't even a recent story.

And everyone who's pursued the story knows there's more to the story than the anti-Clintons  would have you believe.
