Illinois GOP in freefall

Today it broke that Paul Froehlich (R-Schaumburg) will switch to the Democratic Party. See Capitol Fax Blog (Rich Miller).

Miller also reports Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-DuPage County), former chair of the DuPage GOP, made a TV ad for Sen. Barack Obama.

It seems like the Illinois GOP can't even retain the elected officials they have. The recruitment efforts to run someone against Sen. Dick Durbin have been pathetic.

Re: Illinois GOP in freefall

Jerry 101 over at DailyKos has a post up about this and notes that there are some prize House seats that could be up for grabs if the GOP continues to crumble:

Illinois certainly has the ability to pick up 1-2 more Democratic seats in 2008, with Dan Seals running against Mark Kirk again, with Denny Hastert and Ray LaHood possibly retiring, and Freshman Peter Roskam in a district that's trending blue.

Re: Illinois GOP in freefall

If the Dems play their cards right they could have 13-3 or 14-2 majority by 2013.

Obama/Durbin 08

I've said this before... but I just really think Obama/Durbin would be the most amazing ticket.  It's too bad they probably can't get away with robbing Illinois of both its senators simultaneously.

Re: Illinois GOP in freefall

I wonder how much of this has been indirectly facilitated by Senator Obama.

Re: Illinois GOP in freefall
The 2004 loss was such an embarrassment for the GOP.  I think it really put them in a horrible position for the 2006 Governor's race.
In a way though, 2004 had little to do with Obama.  Jack Ryan went down in a sex scandal and then personal rivalries within the party prevented them from picking a candidate until Obama had come to seem inevitable and gotten a lot of national press.  The final choice of Alan Keyes just made them look stupid.

Re: Illinois GOP in freefall

Fair enough.  Still nice to have that kind of momentum behind you.  I would like to see the same thing occur nationally.

Re: Illinois GOP in freefall

The GOP were satisfied until recently because they had Speaker Hassert bringing home the bacon due his influence as the third most powerful figure in Washington. But when they lost that last year, they have nothing in IL.
