Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Via e-mail from Matt from Dodd's campaign:

Reporter: "Senator, there were reports this morning that President Bush will ask Congress for $50 billion more dollars for the Iraq war. What do you have to say about that?

Dodd: "Well, I'm not surprised and I'd be very resistant to that request. I think we've, as I said we're spending well over now half a trillion dollars in this conflict. And again, it's a civil war in Iraq. This is the middle of a civil war and those who have understood this issue have argued from the very beginning that there was never going to be a military solution to the civil war in Iraq. And so I'd be very resistant and I intend to fight any efforts here, I'll do whatever I can to support whatever our troops need to have a safe and secure withdrawal from Iraq. But I don't intend to continue to fund the war over there that I think has no end. As long as we're there, I think the Iraqis are not going to come together as a people it's about time we wound down our military presence there."

(Emphasis mine.)

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Leadership now when it matters and where it matters, in the Congress.

No offense intended to other Presidential candidates whose statements have also been very strong and very helpful.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Good diary, BTD.

Dodd is doing exactly the right thing on this.

Obama needs to have his head examined

I would have thought this time he would get out front on this issue.

If he does the same thing he did in May (keeping his intentions secret until the very last second) it is going to cost him.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Madness..

Dodd says he's leading...
Edwards says he's leading...

What's next?

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Honestly, I hope to see HILLARY and OBAMA leading on rejecting the PResident's disastrous Iraq Debacle.

I promise you right now if they do I will be singing their praises to the heavens.

And sincerely.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Unity on this is what is needed to get it done. It's the only way to produce any pressure.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

And let me sing the praises right now of Sen. Edwards' excellent statement today.

I agree with every word he said.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

It was a good statement, but they all need to be doing more. This war seems like its going to be endless.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

By the way, my advice is to ignore Already. He's a troll. But do what you will.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Big Tent, I wish Dodd all the best. I like him very much. I especially like his temperament. Dodd is very even-handed and like you keep trying to point out, he has been in the government forever, which equals experience.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

I hope netroots are prepared for disappointment, otherwise there will be lots of whinings which are hardly constructive in the days ahead.

George W. Bush is not going to pull out troops in any significant way, GOP is sticking with him. The violence level in Iraq is decreasing. The opinion polls are showing softening signs... The reality is most people are ambiguous about this issue.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Well, so?  I don't altogether agree with defunding because I do not trust Bush on withdrawing the troops safely and because I think it extremely unwise politically, as general Eaton has suggested.  But I do think Democrats need to force Bush to begin a withdrawal.  He's wating it out so the next pres. has to deal with it, NOT because he thinks his strategy is working.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

But how? What available tool do you have in the end if dems are not ready to go for broke?

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

If Hillary agrees with you, I will criticize her vociferously.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

Yes, well, we are all able to express our opinions, I hope.  I don't speak for Hillary.  I agree with your proposal to fund a withdrawal.  At this point, I'd support impeachment.  I just don't trust the president on withdrawal without some sort of plan for it.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

That's not to say I in anyway support this blank check proposal of the presidents.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

SDee this is what Edwards says:
"In October, Congress needs to send the president a funding bill that withdraws all combat troops within the next year and lays the groundwork for a comprehensive political solution that will stabilize the country. "

I can support that.  I support what Dodd says in his statement, as well.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

I feel confident that areyouready does not speak for Hillary nd he will either get on board or shut up.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now
areyouready doesn't come close to speaking for Hillary and certainly not for her supporters.
To be honest with you, I'm completely miffed that our Congress took this break.  I think they should have been working everday to end this war.

Re: Dodd Leads Again On Iraq Now

I don't think clinton would agree with this, and will hopefully agree with the push to set up a deadline.
