O'Reilly preps Wallace for Colbert

On CSPAN'S BookTV coverage of Terry McAuliffe's book release party at which Bill Clinton spoke on 1/22/07, the cameraman catches Bill O'Reilly (who had just been on Colbert) talking to Mike Wallace (about to appear).

O'Reilly appears to be eavesdropping on a conversation Mike Wallace is having, in which Wallace states he is going to be on Colbert. O'Reilly interjects... exchange after the jump...

O'Reilly: Is that right?
Wallace (notices Bill, no idea what he referring to)
O'Reilly: Just got off there.
Wallace: I heard.
O"Reilly: Went ok. Just don't take any crap from him, just look him in the eye and say you're a silly ass or something like that or O'Reilly told...no say this... O'Reilly told me you were trouble.
Wallace: (laughs) I will.
O'Reilly: That'll just wipe him right off the set.
Wallace: I have no idea what they want me to talk about.
O"Reilly: He'll come on, what he'll probably do is, his game, and I don't think he'll do it with you, but his game is to get you off your... your zone.  Alright?
Wallace: (nods)
O'Reilly: So he tries to get you off his zone or something... Or for you... he'll probably be reverential. Not a mean spirited guy, he's not... but they'll throw some crazy stuff at you...
Wallace: Do you watch him a lot?
O"Reilly: No, not really but I watch him occasionally. You know what he's probably going to do with you? If I were him, this is what I would do... He'll show you pictures of Rather and he'll say "what do you think of this guy, what do you think of that guy?" That's what he's probably going to do.

Re: O'Reilly preps Wallace for Colbert

Has he EVER done that with the pictures? That doesn't make sense, to do that with Wallace. Is O'Lielly nuts? (Don't answer that.)

It bugs me how he ends every sentence with "Alright?"... even off-camera with Wallace. Ug.

Bets: Clinton Interview Comes Up

If I were writing for Colbert, I can think of two "targets of opportunity":

  1. The Clinton Interview, since it would give Stephen the opportunity to run nicely edited footage of Wallace hemming and hawing.

  2. Any interview where the lil' punk talks about his father going senile, which says mountains about him as a (sorry excuse) for a human being.

If I were Chris Wallace, I'd consider hiring that guy that did Bush impersonations at last year's correspondents dinner, and get him to do Wallace for him.  May distract from the savaging Stephen's gonna give him.

And if Wallace doesn't sign him up,  the Colbert show should consider checking his availability.
