Gay Men and Women to be Executed in Iraq

So, for the last six years, we have poured out in Iraq our national treasure, including the tax dollars of gay men and women, their families, and their friends for what? It would seem that we have done so to assist the Iraqi government execute Iraqi gay men and women. Reports say that many gay persons are among the 128 persons awaiting execution in Iraq. These gay persons are to be executed for the "crime" of homosexuality and that Iraq intends to start these executions in "batches of 20" starting in this next week.

Activists are calling on the government of the United Kingdom, international human rights groups, and the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva to intervene.  The report says that Amnesty International has called on the Iraqi government to make public all information about each of the detained individuals.

Our State Department's human rights functions are housed in the Office of the Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs.  At the moment, the position is unfilled, but this is a list of telephone numbers of employees at that department.  Maybe we should let them know about what's going on under America's watch in Iraq:

Update: Here's the link to the story from UK Gay News. Here's the link to the the Iraqi LGBT Blog. The story is on both web sites.

Update: Please don't forget what happened in Iran four years ago. The blood of those boys still cries to me from their graves.

UN Humans Rights Commission is a joke.

They're too busy trying to protect the world from Zionism.

Re: Gay Men and Women to be Executed in Iraq

I would think Congressman Jared Polis would be an important part of the effort here, given his connections with the Iraqi LGBT community.

This is horrifying.

And worse, this is happening under our watch. The executions must end... NOW! I'll need to write up a letter and send it to the White House & State Dept web sites ASAP.

Re: This is horrifying.

that's what we got, dead kids and moms, fewer rights for women, no rights to life for homosexuals.  Who were we trying to save now, with this war of choice, someone remind me?  And, guess what, the surge didn't work after all?

It worked just fine...

The intent was to give Bush and Cheney talking points, and the real deeper reason was the catapult Gen David Petreaus up in the ranks of Republican Politics, where he will be Sara Palin's VP in 2012, and when she loses, his plan is to be the head of the ticket in 2016.

Mark your diary, you heard it here first!

Re: Gay Men and Women to be Executed in Iraq

I think the word you're looking for is "people."

Anyway, terrible as this is, can't say it's much of a surprise. I hope enough attention can be brought to bear on this issue to help them.

Re: Gay Men and Women to be Executed in Iraq

If not the president who should be personally intervening here, then I suggest Congressman Barney Frank. Some people over there in Congress could tie up the military budget until some action is taken. Just a thought.
