The Homosexual Agenda Post-Warren

(Proudly cross-posted at C4O Democrats)

There's been plenty of angst lately among progressives regarding how Barack Obama will advance civil rights as President. In particular, the discussion on LGBT rights has been heated since Obama selected known homophobe Rick Warren to speak at the Inauguration. And recently, the discussion has become more complicated with the revelation that Barack Obama may have flip-flopped on marriage equality.

Now I'd rather not dwell upon what Obama should have done in these past decisions. Instead, I want for us to talk about what we must do now to make sure "the homosexual agenda" is advanced on the state and national levels once Obama is inaugurated. We can't dwell upon the past, so we must start planning now to win in the future.

This is what I warned about last month. If anything, the recent fight over Rick Warren & Obama's Inauguration should show us that we can't be complacent in thinking that President Obama and the Democratic Congress will magically pass all the legislation we want. Pols are pols, so they'll try to find an "easy way out" in delaying votes and/or watering down civil rights legislation.

We can't wait for them to act. Rather, we must act now to push our elected officials to do what we elected them to do. We must tell Obama that words aren't enough, that he needs to use his bully pulpit to push for civil rights. We must tell Congress to pass this legislation and make civil rights a priority. And closer to home, we need to work in the states to repeal marriage bans and end "legalized discrimination".

Obama himself said, "We are the ones we've been waiting for." So really, what are we waiting for? Neither Rick Warren nor Washington "conventional wisdom" can stop us now. We can't allow the politicians to tell us to "wait our turn". The time is now for marriage equality. The time is now for workplace equality. The time is now for immigration equality.

The time is now for equality! So if you can, please take the time now to support good organizations like Courage Campaign and ACLU. And if you're in Southern California, please join me this Sunday as we protest in front of Rick Warren's church. The time is now, so let's stop waiting and start acting.

Yes,

as with any politician, we'll have to hold his feet to the fire. But I have high hopes that we will be able to push both Obama and Congress in the right direction.

True...

But that's just it. We must push for it. Pols are pols, even Obama. That's why we can't just leave it up to fate, but create a better destiny by creating some noise.

Re: True...

"Obama himself said, "We are the ones we've been waiting for." So really, what are we waiting for?"

Well, what he meant to say was "I am the one you've been waiting for".

It's called 'in-depth' language, a la Uncle Joe.

Re: The Homosexual Agenda Post-Warren

Are you reclaiming ownership of the phrase "the homosexual agenda"?

Reminds me of Clerks 2

"It's okay, I'm taking it back."

Anyway, I figured adtleft just wanted to give the rightwing blogs a conniption fit.

It's a joke.

The radical right always screams about some "homosexual agenda" to take over the world & enslave the poor lil' heteros. I find it ridiculous how they always scream about that while simultaneously taking away our rights so that they can continue to use us as a "wedge issue".

Actually, what they say is the 'homosexual agenda' is exactly what atdleft just listed as his aims.  No one has ever said anything about homosexuals enslaving anyone, that I've ever heard.

"they always scream about that while simultaneously taking away our rights so that they can continue to use us as a "wedge issue"."

Most conservatives I know fear God's wrath a la Soddom and Gomorroh.

Call them crazy, but it is was it is.  Conservatives are generally NOT against gay marriage so that they can continue to use it as a wedge issue.

"please join me this Sunday as we protest in front of Rick Warren's church."

The sunday before the inauguration?  are you serious?  A pink rally two days before Obama's big day?

You're mad.  You're shooting yourself in the foot.

Re: The Homosexual Agenda Post-Warren

I am a homosexual, and I am here to recruit you.

by bruh3 2009-01-14 01:21PM | 0 recs
DAMN IT

You beat me to him.  I am just one more recruit shy of a free toaster oven.  Oh well, I'll head over to the moose and work on Kysen some more.  I really need that toaster oven.

Haha.

I haven't even been in the business as long as you, and I've already earned my free iPod! Only 2 more recruits until I get the MacBook... hehe ;-) (/snark)

Re: Haha.

Is that a crack about my age!?

Just my luck that I end up in the ONE minority group that doesn't respect it's elders.

by psychodrew 2009-01-14 04:03PM | 0 recs
No, I respect my elders.

I respect them a whole lot, so much so that my last BF was significantly older than I. I think he'll confirm that I know how to "respect my elders"... hehe ;-)

Re: The Homosexual Agenda Post-Warren

On your agenda, that takes place between 6:07 and 6:45, then it's time for cafe au lait, right?

Re: bah

Well Rouke's an idiot but I am largely going to see his movie because my friends tell me he's equally brilliant in The Wrestler as Penn in Milk.

Either winning the Oscar would deserve it. Both, like Daniel Day Lewis are supreme talents. I try not to associate the talent with the personality.

And , no, I don't watch awards shows, but I do follow the industry.

by bruh3 2009-01-15 06:15PM | 0 recs
yea

My last two films that i need to see are the wrestler and slumdog millionaire. then i will be set for the Oscars.
