Former POW Ad Slammin Mccain-It's Up to Us (crossposted at Kos)

Ok people, there's been a lot of lamenting about Obama not hitting hard enough, not being active rather than reactive, starting a new narrative about Mccain, etc. Well, the time is nigh, and instead of Obama, this is actually in our hands. The good people at DFA got Phillip Butler into an ad, and they're asking for contributions to get it on the air. Don't know who Phillip Butler is?

In 1965 he was shot down over North Vietnam where he spent eight years as a prisoner of war. He is a highly decorated combat veteran who was awarded two Silver Stars, two Legion of Merits, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Heart medals.

Was a prisoner with John Mccain. Knows him well. War hero. He also, by the way, wrote a damning indictment of Mccain, in that radical far left wing blog, Military.com.

Many of us read this early on, and several bloggers here and elsewhere said "Man, someone get him into an ad, pronto!" Well, someone did. And we can put this searing stuff everywhere if we want to.

I'm tired of whining and feeling politics is unfair and why did they say that naughty thing about Obama and why doesn't he fight fire with fire. Let's do it for him. This is the kind of thing that could turn this election. It's not some corrupt smear merchant like Jerome Corsi. A hero, in Hanoi Hilton for 3 years longer than Mccain.

I hate to sink to the rethugs level... but let's show em what it feels like to get good and properly swiftboated!

Open Your Eyes

When are we gonna understand that this is exactly the kind of trap (ala Dukakis in a tank) that the Rethugs live for.

Rethugs are professionals at this and wrote the book on how to play all sides of this game.   They are dying for you and ready for you to fall face-flat into it.  Zero chance of making McSame look bad oooh!!! tortured for only 2 years rather than 5 years.  2 minutes of torture and we'd still look bad.

The shit with this guy seeking his 15 minutes of fame will be debunked in hours by the Rethugs and will blow up in our faces.

The f*cking economy stupid is plenty to win this thing if they had the balls to stay on a relentless course of attack.  And the ECONOMY has no possible defense by the rethugs ... gas prices, your wages, your house value, your job security and DONT GET DISTRACTED OFF this message.

Look at me Look at me

Seems someone wants the spotlight anyway possible...

"People often ask if I was a Prisoner of War with John McCain. My answer is always "No - John McCain was a POW with me." The reason is I was there for 8 years and John got there 2 ½ years later, so he was a POW for 5 ½ years. And we have our own seniority system, based on time as a POW.

John's treatment as a POW:

1) Was he tortured for 5 years? No. He was subjected to torture and maltreatment during his first 2 years, from September of 1967 to September of 1969. After September of 1969 the Vietnamese stopped the torture and gave us increased food and rudimentary health care. Several hundred of us were captured much earlier. I got there April 20, 1965 so my bad treatment period lasted 4 1/2 years. "

what's the scope of this ad buy?

anyone has any idea?

by tarheel74 2008-09-08 06:39PM | 0 recs
Not a good idea. Sorry.

I'm not above getting nasty, so to speak, especially after the Swiftboaters.  But give Rove credit for knowing how to set that up.  Rove followed through with movies, books, interviews, websites, the whole deal.  The Swiftboaters, in less formidable hands, would have backfired badly.

This could backfire and has little potential payoff.

Re: Not a good idea. Sorry.

Could be run days before the election. No time to backfire then.

Wrong...

The Swiftboat Veterans for Truth DID backfire at first, when they first started beating the drum for that, around March of 2004.  That's one reason it took people by surprise when this thing that had already been debunked and chewed and spit out came roaring back.

If people haven't written books about this, they should.  You should read Joshua Marshall's famous post about the Bitchslap Theory of Politics, which the SBVT basically adhered to.

This ad is amateur.

Re: Former POW Ad Slammin Mccain-It's Up to Us (cr

I do not support this ad at all. I don't care who it is - Republican, Democrat, conservative, liberal - slamming someone's military service who was tortured as a POW for years is a rotten, offensive idea.

this is about mccain's temperment

it's a perfectly legitimate point. i guess you'd be perfectly happy with a mccain presidency, just so long as you can sleep at night knowing you "fought the good fight."

American soldiers will be in Iran within the first year of a McCain presidency. Oil will be up to $250/bbl and beyond. Hezbollah WILL perpetuate terror attacks, probably within the US, if there is a US strike in Iran. Iraq will blow up once again. Not to mention the domestic repurcussions.

Re: this is about mccain's temperment

I would like to see how you would respond to being tortured, with both of your arms broken, at the mercy of an enemy with your life at stake, and see how your "temperament" holds up in constant pain, illness, being beaten to within an inch of your life. Then you are judged for your character by people who have never been through it. What a load of horse sh-t.

If that's what you think it takes to win an election and that is worth your integrity to do it you go right ahead, and watch as it sinks the Democratic Party.

Re: Former POW Ad Slammin Mccain-It's Up to Us (cr

The ad doesn't slam McCain for his military service. The ad shows someone who knew him from his military service slamming him for being a hothead.

My problem with the ad is that a 30 second snippet of some random guy speaking ill of McCain is a completely ineffective ad. I should care that some guy doesn't like McCain why? This ad doesn't make the sale.

Re: Former POW Ad Slammin Mccain-
Frankly, McCain opened himself up for these ads by using the POW line every time he's accused of doing something wrong.
For someone who doesn't like to talk about his time as a POW, he has turned into the Guiliani version of " a noun, a verb and a POW".
