The reason why the Obama campaign opted out, I believe, is because they didn't want their candidate to be on an uneven playing field. Now, because of their fundraising prowess, they don't have to worry about being short on funds. But they've created the same situation that they themselves didn't want to create; an uneven playing field where one campaign is being outspent by the other and is limited on resources.
In short, the Obama campaign has become the "evil" they sought to destroy (and yes, I know that's hyperbole).
We all know why the Obama campaign. made the decision they made. They did what they did in order to win and no one is faulting them for that. However, the end result is a broken public financing system that lawmakers and other opinion leaders must fix.
